7/10 is kind of a death sentence for a game today. Unless you can reasonably predict getting a 9/10 or above overall (and not on astroturfing sites), you might as well just give up.
Nothing in this review compels me to play this game. I enjoy shooters, but really the basic problem is that they are predictable.
I'm looking for the next game to be a huge conflict of moral senses with a philosophical debate surrounding it.
Give me a reason to play that is fun and challenging.
Blood dribbles, effects, and engine features are not reason enough to play. They are all supposed to be in the background and just part of the action. Don't write about them, because they are supposed to be just an aspect of a good game.
Measure it in the realism factor of the game, but focus on the story, the conflict and possible paths to resolution. Also look at the reliability of the various scenarios in delivering ENJOYMENT.
The gaming industry has a huge problem ahead of it... and that is the dawn of more and more realistic engines, without the uniformly applied philosophical conundrums that really showcase character development and drive the plot towards something truly enjoyable.
Why wouldn't Valve be blown away? Valve was a group of dedicated gamers who originally wanted more out of the first person shooter experience, so they started their own company and leveraged their own talent to creating Half Life. They were heralded similarly to the Purchase Brothers, although it's not the same scale. I bet seeing that film reminded some of people at Valve of their experience around the first launch of Half Life.:)
Think of the future. It takes so long to read a book. With a special device you could directly alter the physical molecules into new configurations!
Every time I hear of someone suggest some out of date technology to go back to the way it used to be, it reminds me of the chariots in Rome. Perhaps we'll have to go back to chariots too, but we won't have the money for the horse feed, unfortunately.
It could be one day possible to create a kind of device that harmonizes human beings early on in childhood development, increasing their awareness and understandings.
Auth systems work. By keeping the bulk of the game functionality on the server side, and requiring a login, 99% of DRM issues are covered. You could argue that a company could provide the game engine for free as a method of enticing people to register and pay to play.
There is but one contempt of court around here and it is this: that you think a judge would remain biased even in the face of a technical explanation.
Forcefully put, but I see your point. I still think that the judge would be cluttered with the imprint of a prisoner escaping. Few judges would agree that a prisoner should attempt to break out of jail even if the prisoner was wrongfully convicted.
Judges hear the term jail breaking as some unlawful act whereby a PRISONER escapes from a place they were put, by order of another judge. This is the ultimate offense to a judge barring of course contempt of court, although it could be argued that jail breaking is a form of contempt of court, outside the court room.
They use a term like this regardless of if it means anything to programmers or sysadmins, and it hypes their case. I guarantee no judge has heard of this chroot jail business, and even upon hearing it, if both sides agree to the terminology, the judge will weigh heavily on Apple's side if this is permitted.
Being a good defense lawyer, it would be imperative to strike that term from the record as slang.
What you say might be correct, but to a judge who hears all kinds of cases a day, the term Jail breaking can only be an illegal act. Expect full giant books to be thrown at offenders in the future, unless EFF puts this under wraps.
Designers have creative license to do what they want to do. If a gamer doesn't like something, they can move on to another game or learn to create a game themselves.
As a designer, you have an obligation to your process and your field not to pay any attention to the people playing the game.
Unless of course, you are doing it for the money -- then you better listen to them or you'll be broke soon!:)
You can't please everyone. You can please some, but not all of them. If you please them all you please nobody, least of all yourself.
On the topic of prison, when one initiates dogma centered around a prison, and utilizes terms like "jail breaking" then these terms are to help encourage judicial favor for Apple. The truth is that when someone sells an object, modfication of the object is the right of the owner.
Otherwise, let's have court cases about how judges cannot alter their robes in any way. They all must wear the robes the way they arrive on the first day of court.
If you car breaks, you must throw it out and buy another car.
I could go on, but rational people wouldn't require me to.
Perhaps attainable, actually. A full lockdown would be possible if it were made law and enforced at the source.
If USA says that all users must subscribe to the internet from the USA, and also stipulate that all ISP must follow the strict guidelines applied, then you have an enforced internet.
People won't tolerate that, however. They will bypass it.
The goal of a regulated internet is attainable, yet not with the desired results. The effect would be devastating. The real thrust argument that we should simply not waste our money regulating the internet. As soon as the internet becomes regulated, pirate internets will spring up and circumvent the internet or bypass security measures. People would go to jail for helping that happen, but it would still happen. We would wash away a ton of money trying to fix a leaky dam.
Wireless technology is continually improving to the point that some day we will be able to have a full internet experience without every having anything connected via wires. It would be possible for pockets of subversive internets to piggyback the signal and thrive for quite some time.
I can't think of a good reason why future generations of this country are going to pay for our television today.
Because if we leave our future generations with a huge debt, it will give them incentive to adopt the Star Trek economy and abolish money in favor of a higher calling for the human species -- the calling of greater knowledge and species survival.
For as long as humans have roamed the earth in fear of being eaten by something, we have survived often at the expense of other human beings. Perhaps that's what makes us different than other organisms?
Bad logic, is bad. The reason a typical wight cannot be recorded on film, is the same as the reason it cannot be recorded digitally. You would need something that can record evil, some kind of evil-o-meter, but that wouldn't look as COOL as a decent hand drawn sketch of one.
Imagine a bingo hall. Now imagine that fat lady smoking till her eyes turn yellow. Now imagine her somehow translucent and also dark with brimming evil.
That's the thing that is utterly TERRIFIED of a wight.
Wights are impervious to light and can only be seen by the human eye under certain conditions. Namely you have to be sitting at a table with a 20 sider in your hand, and you MIGHT get a glimpse of one. But only for a few seconds. They are pretty tricky. Creatures spawned of Pazuzu, some say.
Building a city flow is very different than building data flow.
The number one difference is that cities take pride in their monuments and historical buildings, which tend to become the source of traffic bottlenecks. It would be best if our cities could move with traffic demand, and scale with traffic demand. But currently that is impossible.
This situation reminded me of an apt poem. Keep in mind that if you live in a tyranny, the only one who can change it is you. Do it before it gets any worse in America.
First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the communists and I did not speak out - because I was not a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me - and by then there was no one left to speak out for me.
Are you looking for their prodigious reproduction rates or counting on them killing each other on the way?
Prodigious reproduction rates that lead to a struggle for food that results in them killing one another for nourishment. Also, if they are OUT THERE, they are not DOWN HERE, so even if they make it -- it's a big win for Mother Earth.

It's down for a sinister reason! They don't want us to READ the articles and become informed of the truth!!!
Also, why the racism? Just because the comets are DARK doesn't mean they are evil. RACISTS!
We need to destroy these communist comets before they damage our strong and beloved economy!

Progress moves in one direction; forward.
It's retroactive.

I was so excited for this title with all of the cool features and ideas.
Then I read all the stuff about the DRM and I totally passed on it.
Fuck Spore and fuck all the other games that force DRM onto our computers.
World of Warcraft does it right, imo. You have an account and you log in. They authorize you. Warden is non-intrusive.
Blizzard got Wow's auth system right, imo.

Also, IANAL but I play one on TV.
Apple's lawyer won't play on this term to play the heartstrings of judges?
Oh I'm sorry, Apple can't afford good lawyer... you must be right because you're not a troll and you aren't already on my foes list.
Fucking douche. :)

How is the astro turf growing in YOUR stadium?
Our stadium uses ACME ASTRO TURF (TM*)! Because ACME ASTRO TURF (TM*) is shiny and greener than your average astro turf.
Look at our scientific astro turf results!

Sadly, the typical Wight cannot be seen on film. The world will have to make do with a sketch artist's version of this case.
