Personally I think the independence of Wikipedia is great, and any advertising would not only compromise that integrity, but give contributors a sense of entitlement that the site is better off without.
This was written directly beside an advert for Microsoft.
Congrats on your last minute entry into the running for "dumbest thing anybody said on Slashdot in 2008".
Thanks! Be sure to take the time to publicize mah drivel. Also, inb4 "he bought it on ebay".
I love the part about how the person from Slashdot wrote that the adverts would ruin Wikipedia's image. It was directly beside an advertisement for Microsoft. FUCKING WIN./thread
I can understand the idea that by accepting advertising dollars, you somehow compromise your journalistic integrity.
Sorry but this makes no sense. Plenty of commercial journalists make money selling stories to newspapers and online websites. The only reason someone would take Journalism in university would be to enter into that profession as a career path. The fundamental definition of the term career, most certainly involves being able to provide for yourself and your family.
The only existing model for newspaper revenue is advertising, and subscription. Funny how what is good for IRL is bad for the net. If you want to live in communist Internetopia, pack your bags and feel free to.
Personally, if someone wants my hard work, they either pay me for the agreed upon price or they get a good lawyer. My time is limited and my time is valuable.
Yeah the more complicated the system is, the easier it is to break.
People who aren't computer savvy will rely on someone who is, and this relied upon person typically turns out to have a major chip on their shoulder from years of telephone abuse and schoolyard bullies. The meek shall inherit the earth, because the strong don't understand computers, or have the social graces to bring that fat scary guy in the office a chocolate bar once in a while, which leads to the meek stealing everything from the strong and blaming the economy for any shortfalls.
Wow gold is too valuable. Pay them back with fish fingers that look like Jesus.
Yet seriously for a second... why would anyone take anything seriously they received on Facebook? I'd be like:
tl;dr GTFO, KTHXBYE!
We run into a danger here that if a court can uphold what someone sends electronically through a third party system, that strengthens the toehold spammers have. Now I have to read everything that says URGENT YOU MUST READ!
Charge a monthly subscription fee and force all content to be hosted on servers with client connection programs that cover non-specifics -- problem solved. When was the last time you heard of Blizzard complaining about how many ppl pirate World of Warcraft?
Slashdot: Where comments about Encyclopedia Dramatica can be modded as insightful. This reinforces the rule you mentioned, considering the sheer volume of scary things on that uncylopedia.

I don't think so!
Yeah nerds are all a blight on society, until the people need something computer-related. Nerds should demand this condo-fiber idea never happens, because it will detract from our World of Warcraft time. Techsup is best handled from India, IMHO.
This is by far the coolest thing I have ever seen. I want one for my home and office. I can then drink coffee while hanging upside-down from the ceiling doing meditative reflexology. If Nirvana could exist within reach of this torrid mortal coil, this zero-g coffee mug has extended a very tempting invitation!
Or maybe he's keeping qualified people with diverse opinions close so that he doesn't pigeon-hole himself with people who tell him things he already knows.
We both contrastingly different statements, yet within the confines of the current facts, neither of our comments could be easily refuted, nor would we want to. Obama is a good spin-master, so perhaps we are both somehow correct? It's wise to keep tabs on what people of how people attached to radically different ideologies will think and feel, in any given moment. Obama has not, however, considered his political safety by promoting these people into his sphere of influence. The thing about spheres of influence, is that they are also spheres of access. Access is required to destroy someone, politically (or god help us if its true, otherwise).
the workers who snooped on Obama's phone records have been fired
I can't believe that someone would be so stupid as to use their own upass when digging up Obama's phone records. This is not only grounds for termination but I'm certain that if he wanted to Obama could seek criminal charges. Does anyone know if he's planning on going that route?
Obviously these people knew that they would get caught -- so who really did it? If I was their attourney I would be looking for indications of whether a Deny-deny-deny defense could be possible. Although it's likely these people admitted to this invasion of privacy, judging from the article.
No, you can expect President Bush to be fired for ordering the wiretap.
No, you can expect President Bush to be fired because his term is over and it's time for him to GTFO. The Republicans were fired by the American people, although most of them hold key positions near Obama (keep your friends close, and your enemies closer).
The article says that the employees did not access the "contents of the calls"... wait does that mean that Verizon has stored electronic recordings, or transcripts?!?! of all of Obama's calls?!?!
Or does this mean that Verizon does not store that information? And who here believes them?
I pay taxes because I know my money is going towards good things that people need, like road, schools, special services, the military, utilities, and infrastructure. I want their opinions left out of that equation -- notice these are all SUPPORT based activities. I want my government to support me but not to interfere with me.
But now they want to spend money on things like controlling the Internet. While I think there are arguments for regulation I could support in theory, nearly all of the arguments I must reject, as they tend to conflict a free society.
When you no longer live in a democracy it is your duty to overthrow your government, especially if they interrupt your valuable World of Warcraft time!!!
Prision is full of criminals that don't agree with you
Well they didn't at one point but I'm pretty sure they are hopeful they'll find a new angle the next time. One thing that seems to be found in most of the white collar criminals is their belief or hope in getting away with something as being foolproof. Cutting off the cell phones will require them to find new forms of technologies that bypass such signal noise barriers.
I just realized what they mean by smuggling them in. I'm guessing I wouldn't want one of those phones close to my mouth/nose.
That's not all. In prison, other things can get close to your mouth and nose you wouldn't want. That's why it's prison. Be smarter than everyone you know and you might stay out of jail. Besides, most white collar crimes require too much effort to be even worth your time. (although bailouts seem to be the new bank-heist, and you get away with it!)
Seriously we had bottom-of-the-barrel Celeron Acers with like 512 ram that were Vista Ready! They took each of them like 5-10min to get the desktop to a usable state. Maybe 4min to the desktop but with all the background apps loading these machines took forever, and we had to turn everything off the demo to get them to even work at all for a customer demo.
I sold every customer away from them but you have no idea how many wanted them. The penny-pinching customers who don't trust anyone would listen to me and then after about 10minutes of me discussing their needs and stuff, they would buy the machines anyway because someone they knew said it was a good deal. It's tough to get rapport with some folks you know... LOL
You try to help in retail and you have so much resistance working against you. I figure if I can save some people some hassle it's worthwhile. I had a thumbdrive of links to tuning websites I would email anyone who wanted them... and we offered specially updated systems for people too at the time, but it was too expensive for some folks. I just tried to help whoever I could get through the Vista Ready campaign. It was a big struggle.
This campaign was as much the fault of all the manufacturers, as it was MSFT's. They used it as an excuse to clear out old inventory at higher prices, because they had the sticker.
Read any video game box, and minimum system requirements offer the WORST POSSIBLE user experience. The manufacturers looked at the minimum system requirements published by MSFT for running Vista with all features TURNED OFF. Then any system that could support THOSE specs, was considered to be Vista ready.
I worked retail during the period "Vista ready" hit the shelves and only a very small handful of machines meet what our team of salespeople would consider to be truly capable of running vista. The whole thing was a total scam to sell as many computers as possible during the typical iteration lull; when a new product is about to release, nobody typically wants the old one. The seriously funny part of Vista's release is how few people wanted it, but MSFT acted like everyone was going to love it, thus proving how out of touch they are with reality. The new Seinfeld ads prove this to be true. Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
And the next time a porn picture pops up on your computer while you are trying to navigate to some kids site, while your childing are waiting and watching, shall we indict you for aiding and abetting the abuse of a minor?
If the facts warrant the case, why not? I believe the facts did warrant this case, but hey -- IANAL.

I can't get this to work because Firefox is forcing HTMLENTITIES on the location field so I'm getting:

Can anyone help fix this because this could be seriously helpful.
