  2. Karma or Dharma? on Debugging Indian Computer Programmers · · Score: 1, Insightful

I'm a programmer and I've often downloaded scripts and classes for PHP online. I've tried using code from a wide variety of spoken languages (all for PHP or C++), because sometimes these packages have the features I want. Every time I use these scripts it's a pain to try and understand what the parent coder had in mind, or what they meant by certain var names, and comments. Don't even bother trying to translate them using Babelfish or something, because it's like playing a guessing game. This usually happens after the code has already been integrated and needs an update.

So I've stayed away from that, and find that Google is helpful to an extent for looking for scripts in English (but not 100%).

The bottom line is that Indian programmers were thought of as an all-powerful way for corporations to combat wage hikes in North America. The fact that these same companies are feeling the backlash now due to the lack of scaling they are finding, triggers a bittersweet emotion...

And no, it's not funny to think of people dying because of superstitions, especially when they are doing it to themselves, to some extent. If people really want to stop the spread of HIV, they have to fight against the will to create a larger population base when the population is in a rapid state of decline.

It's an instinctive reflex to try and have many children with many partners when the infant death rates are high. That's mother nature messing with your whole culture, IMHO.

Cultures need to find safe ways to select lifemates, and embrace the need for a lifemate instead of a wide variety of partners.

There are huge problems going on in the world concerning HIV, and most of the problems are indeed related to intrinsic cultural explotation by the virus itself, almost giving it a kind of intelligence. The virus almost appears to be engineered, and I often wonder if it was... /tinfoil hat

This seems to be entirely useful. The proposed design looks like they will have a quick dictionary lookup on a word in the language being used with a definition, and cross-reference to the same word in other languages. That could be entirely useful, and anyone who enjoys Engrish might wish to help add that module (mostly for fun), but it looks like this project might actually take some of the mystery out of translation. Perhaps Engrish is going to be a thing of the past?

  6. Dirt on MD5 To Be Considered Harmful Someday · · Score: 2, Insightful

I've always called this dirt. Some folks call it padding, but it's essentially the same. However up until now, no one has known how to do it with md5 and come up with the same sum. This is nothing more than a hack to me.

The bottom line is that if you care enough about security this will only be a problem for a day or so when md5 is finally solved completely and the hashes don't take five days to brute force -- they could be solved in a matter of microseconds. As soon as that happens, the next hash system goes up and it would not likely be so easy to break, unless the whole hashing process is somehow cracked wide open (which would be very bad for a number of reasons).

What we'll likely see is that with the greater increases in CPU speeds available to end users, the hash breaking systems can be tested easier until a final reverse algorhythm is available for md5. There already is a site that will break your hash and give you *something* with the same hash, and it takes a couple days.

  11. Not Quite A Slash-Ad But Close on FIA On3 Networked Multimedia System Reviewed · · Score: 3, Insightful

While I sympathize, as playlists should be a feature in any player... Because you explained the autoplaylist feature, you should not expect it as a standard feature. The rest of what you're saying makes perfect sense to me and begs the question: why was this posted at Slashdot if the On3 networked multimedia system appears so lacking? Also, calling something The On3 (The One, ie: Neo), certainly appears to be a misnomer if the system is so utterly lacking.

Also, I must take issue with that review because it lacks any definative bottom line summary. They don't come out and say : this rocks, or, this is a bad buy. I think it might have something to do with the fact that the reviewers are selling this product. I won't cry "Slash-ad!" (because of the insight in this /. post) but I will point out that this appears to be a sneaky advertising trick to try and sell units. "Here we'll just publish an ad and call it a review."

  14. Film & Vids on Best Tools for Machinima? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Would any single game engine help you create your own Citizen Kane?
Not right now, but I'm sure this is a direction the video games creators are contemplating because it's an area of expected growth. It would certainly make the creation of cinematics much easier for dev teams if machinima was considered part of the engine.

The problem is that in games like Doom 3 for example, the creation of cinematics is scripted heavily and designed into the levels. Models take weeks to build correctly and integrate, and you have to have strong modelling skills to achieve that. There is no separation of set and action or actors, for the most part. I understand that Half Life 2 has changed this kind of static nature, but it's still very early.

The games would have to have quick modelling system built in, or methods for generating random characters and skins, and voices.

I'm sure that in the next twenty years, this is the direction of video games. It would be a smart approach, IMHO.

You also have to consider the comparison between video game sales and box office/rental sales. Video games are beating the movie industry to a pulp, so film as a medium of expression is likely on the way out, unless the business makes some changes and continues to grow and support new vision. Indy film will always be of a higher quality than blockbusters, IMHO.

Look at the reviews for Alexander. Ebert said the film was crap. That's a film they spent $150mil to create!

With games like Halo 2 grosing $100 mil on the first day, for a much smaller budget compared to Alexander, the bottom line is clear. The age of movies is waning.

Quality of film has declined heavily as far as dramatic content, with the exception of films like LotR. I'm seeing the film expression as being played out for the most part.

Personally, as a person stuck with XP because I just don't have time to know everything about Linux to install it and keep it running, I would like to see an open source solution for Linux that is completely plug and play. To me, the amount of time required to know Linux is the only thing keeping me away. I imagine a future where I can download a copy of Linux and it would install on my system without any configuration and every option would be through an option menu, like our Slashdot prefs. If this could be a reality today, I would drop XP in a heartbeat.

In the beginning he got into 3d game applications for a similar reason. The cutting edge is always the very outer area of human development, and Carmack makes a good example of a programmer who has taken aim at the edge of what is known to programmers. Maybe Mr. Carmack would care to comment?

Much like how Id Software develops engines, the space craft programming is new an innovative, although the difference is that space craft have systems have no room for error.

  18. Guard the Table, EFF! on Public Interest Groups Face Uphill Battle at WIPO Meeting · · Score: 5, Insightful
Both yesterday and again today, written statements provided by IP Justice and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which were placed on the table designated for floor papers, were stolen within minutes of being deposited on the table. Additionally yesterday documents provided by the Union for the Public Domain were also missing shortly after being placed on the table.
I find these tactics to be what I would expect from the thug-like governments and greedy corporations; they can't secure with truth and justice what they can secure with theivery and wickedness. Not all companies would condone this kind of behaviour, but it is becoming evident that the amoral progress towards global capitalism are shattering our freedoms... freedoms our forefathers fought and died to protect... freedoms our nations were built upon. I find these recent criminal actions to be very enlightening, in turn, that the very message protecting our rights for programming and developmental freedoms, was forced to place a guard at the table.

The guard at the table, protecting the documents to be heard at WIPO, seems to be a good image, but also a telling image. How long will it be before we can no longer place a guard at the table? How long before justice itself is patented by some company?
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) will be there to urge delegates to reject aspects of the treaty that would impoverish the public domain and thwart innovation.
