The mental image of a chubby flight crew technician nano-duck-taping a Russian heavy lift vehicle to an American payload module, taping away in all his Mr. Fixit, butt-crack glory... has given my minds eye a need for psychological Visine... it burns, it burns!!! I think I'm going to have my brain washed out now. Ta
Is a nanotube technology the sucked the heat out of processors, and turned it back into electricity with a fairly high level of efficiency. Store that energy in high performance capacitors and you could cut the waste heat and electrical consumption of electronic devices by some huge amount. Imagine a laptop supercomputer running for months on a charge... of course there would be the energy lost from producing an illuminated display. We need hardware to interface our computers and visual cortices!!! imagine the improved visual experience and reduced energy consumption. Perhaps???
Actually there are several problem with "Naked Nanotubes" that make them potentially very dangerous.
First because of their size, they can go virtually anywhere in a body and lodge virtually anyplace, messing with synaptic structures, metabolic processes, and potentially damaging cell machinery up to and including DNA/RNA. Second they are highly reactive chemically, and because all the interesting chemistry in a human being is organic (i.e. carbon based), nanotubes can and in fact do have significant impacts on everything from endocrine function to muscle contraction.
The good news is if you bind one or both ends of the tube to a substrate it tends the stay put rather well (or in the case of the nano tape, incorporate the tubes into a foam.) Also if you add a metal ion to a tube, you make the tube biologically inert, and therefore much less toxic. So there are existing technologies for making nanotube relatively safe, and we simply need to come up with intelligent ways to produce and dispose of said nanotubes to keep the environment friendly for life as we know it.
Excuse me, but when the astronauts sleep, they see flashes in their eyes caused by energetic particles colliding with the fluid in their eyes and emitting Cerenkov light cones. Forgive me, but that's pretty damn extreme. Are you suggesting that similar impacts with the electronics of a smart phone aren't going to have serious implications both on the calculations the smart phone is making, and the physical hardware of the smart phone itself? I for one would not want to wager my life that a non-rad-hard processor in a smart phone was going to correctly calculate my re-entry vector. Here, hold these marshmellows, and call me on your smart phone after to reenter to let me know whether or not they're cooked:-)
My point is that every one of these decisions is a crack in the wall of the edifice called the freedom of legal use. Tell me that an army of Sony lawyers won't take this decision and spin it 25 new ways to make everything from reading a cereal label to passing gas on a bullet train without Sony's permission an act of treason, punishable by Seppuku or watching looped Taylor Swift videos!
It's called the Ouroborus, and its a snake swallowing its own tail. Watching modern business, cannibalizing itself in the misguided hope of squeezing the last frigging cent, yen, drachma, or peso out of a product, service, or piece of IP is like watching the Ouroborus make a lunch of itself, happily munching away until that last mouthful slips quietly into some parallel dimension (I'm guessing hell, but at least some kind of mindless oblivion.) Sony Legal stomps on Sony music so it can maintain a deathgrip on the IP of recording artists, the RIAA consumes its own customers, and makes a public campaign of lies about why its failing to sell records, its a bunch of hypertestosteronal primates thinking they can kill and threaten their way to controlling every aspect of what people see, think and hear, and a neofascist government (both in Japan and the U.S.) which knee-jerkingly gives these crime bosses anything they ask for. The system is broken. Information (like art for instance) flows like water and as long as people can watch someone on a street corner playing beautiful music, the big guys at the media conglomerates are threatened. Personally I'm tired and nauseous of the cookie cutter clone artists being pumped out of the product packaging wombs of the big media producers. In the 60s and 70s, we got female artists ranging every depth and breadth of sound, body type, color, style, flavor, and sophistication from the ragged edge of self destruction blues pouring out of Janis Joplin, to the cool jazz pop of Joni Michell's "Free Man in Paris". None of these women looked like Vogue models, there were real, and deep, and sexy, and dangerously smart. Look at the selection of prepackaged, flavorless, flawless, lifeless female artists that perform today. The only female artist I'm hearing on the popular radio today that I'm still certain has a pulse and not a set of EveReady(tm) batteries, is Pink.
The big guys running the studios are so busy defending proprietary turf, and massaging those big stiff egos, that they can't admit they're strangling the newborn future in its cradle. Right or wrong (mostly wrong) they are willing to ride those egos all the way to bankruptcy and oblivion, while the internet makes possible a new and profound democratization of artistic expression the likes of which has never before been seen. New business people will grow up in the place of suicidal giants. Young intelligent men and women who can see the opportunity, and a business model that will generate amazing new fortunes will fill the vacuum, and we'll all remember when the snake swallowed its tail and went out in a last rage filled cry. To quote Mrs. Gump "Forrest, stupid is as stupid does!"
No this ruling says both place shifting and time shifting are illegal so indeed your VCR, Recordable DVD, and DVR are now all worthless pieces of art-metal sculpture and if you use them as anything other, you will most likely find yourself under the prosecutorial auspices of the Sony Legal Ninjas!!! Retribution will swift and terrible! Hai!!!
The Telcos are gouging you because they can... its their job, remember, capitalism... whatever the market will bear?
Elect officials that will hold the Telcos to account.
Elect officials interested in building local and statewide large public pipes
Pass strict laws preventing the Telcos from undermining your plan, because they will see you attacking their profits and go after you and your official like a pack of wolves
Convince a surprisingly ill informed populace, that what you're doing isn't communist, isn't socialist, and is in their and their children's best interest, and worth paying tax money for.
Look as long as we live with the best government money can buy, you'll keep getting what you've got (only worse.) The first move is to separate business and state, and enforce the separation between church and state.
This is becoming a strange bone of contention for me... So many folks scream stop taxing me at the Federal Level, move the taxes closer to the local level where they can do the most good. This of course ignores vital national services like the Military, Interstate Highways and Railways, Air Transport and Transportation, National Science and Space Research, and National Infrastructure, or even the problem of equitable distribution of wealth between rich and poor municipalities, but even putting all that aside, I hear other disturbing comments all to frequently.
People don't want to pay taxes at the State or Local level, any more than they want to pay taxes at the Federal Level. Our nations infrastructure is at the breaking point. Our vital government services are nearing catastrophic failure. In Illinois, gas stations no longer honor state gas vouchers for Highway Patrol Vehicles (they know the state can't pay them.) In California the new Governor just handed the state the new budget and everyone in California is reflexively retching. We finally have a Governor who's honest enough to say if you want it, pay for it, or it goes away. I guess the point here is, at what point does the entire thing go into the toilet, before people get the message, if you want it, you have to pay for it? It doesn't mean let politicians waste it, misuse it, or pocket it. We need to hold our representatives responsible. It does mean if you want schools worth sending kids to, roads that don't rip the wheels off of your car, bridges that don't fall, police and fire departments, or even an end to herds of wandering psychotics walking the street and shooting senators, judges, and innocent children, you need to pay. Tax is only evil when is taken without fair representation of those who are taxed, and succeeds in bringing vital services to those who are taxed.
As a nation, its time to take the reins back from big business, and religious interests, and greedy self serving individuals who think the nations resources are their personal pantry. Its time to get responsible, choose a future full of those things that we can all agree on, and make those things happen. And yes, that includes paying for them.
And why shouldn't they? We've allowed groups of powerful people with billions at their disposal to manipulate our government in earnest since the late 70s. When it now takes over a billion dollars to wage a successful Presidential campaign, who could possibly become president who wasn't first an effective whore. By allowing business to set the rules, set the stage, pick the players, and reshape our entire government into it's own image, we now live in a society that is owned and controlled by the top 0.5% in wealth, and believes there is no need for a middle class. As long as people stare dumbly at the box in their living room and blindly do what it tells them to, we can expect nothing, save a whole lot more of the same.
The reason past Tablets have failed is because their creators didn't have a clue what people actually needed and wanted. Convergence had made it possible to create a single device the does virtually everything a person might need for a single person information product. It should support a broad selection of applications, provide complete communications solutions, have a powerful touch interface, be intuitive and easy to use with powerful capabilities just below the surface of the simple touch based UI, it should have easy wireless expansion for peripherals and enhancements, and it should be fully open so new technology and vendors can create new product utilizing its many features. Past tablets were simple laptop computers using MS Windows... predictably the wrong stuff. Powerful linux based OSs, sporting features derived from smart phones, and the artful UIs spawned by Apple, are much closer to what people are looking for. Add the best of what Smart Phones and Laptops have together in a single device, with weight and form factor of an iPad, and you have something which is an almost perfect device. Add lots of interfaces to external storage, computer interfacing, keyboards and stylii, network peripherals, and 3G/4G networks, and you have something that will pretty much displace the rest of the normal personal processing market.
In a related story, it has been reported that top officials at the Social Security Administration are prepared to reduced the entire Social Security System to a Web App and run it on the Amazon Cloud.
I/O devices are use appropriate. Touch Screens, Gestural Computing, and Adaptive Human Interfaces will be great for allowing people to do complex activities using behavior which are intuitive and natural for human beings (the kind of primate behavior that is hardwired into us and can be exploited for enhanced human/computer productivity and ease of use.) Those things include pointing, grasping, holding, pinching, tapping, and waving. Stylus and Pad will continue to grow and evolve as a natural artistic interface, and in all likelihood will morph into an all purpose artistic media device that can perform 2D and 3D artistic manipulation. Keyboards will be the primary means for loading large amounts of textual data for a long time to come, they simply have too much buy-in from too many cultures. As well, they are designed for allowing people to convert thought into text whether it be poetry, prose or software code at an optimal rate. Ultimately keyboards will be replaced by advance speech recognition and beyond that, all interfaces will fall to advanced cybernetic hardware to wetware broad channel interfaces. Once computers can talk directly to our minds, senses, and motor centers, the need for external devices is rendered moot (save for museums and emergency technology failures.)
Of course this presumes everything continues on it's current trajectory.
That was the point... he did nothing but make fun of the society, and he didn't see any clear dividing line between it and the Politicians it produced. Our government is almost joke proof... it is it's own best parody.
In fact George is immune to everything you mentioned and virtually everything else now, save decomposition... the boy has passed from this mortal coil. By the way, if you actually do research about the man, you'll find that even though he was a thoroughly human, human being, and subject to his fair share of faults, George was one of the most intelligent, hard working, eclectic, and ethically scrupulous people walking the planet, and had no trouble publicly pointing out where he'd been at fault or error. I love what he said about "Political Jokes".
To paraphase; "I don't do Political Jokes. It's not like Politicians fall out of a rift in the universe from a parallel dimension. Where do you get greedy, corrupt, stupid Politicians? You get them from a greedy, corrupt, stupid Society which rewards greed, corruption, and stupidity. What's to joke about?"
The story is organic fertilizer. If anything, the problem isn't hackers... the market is now an autonomous exercise in artificial intelligence, and for the most part, beyond human understanding. Don't get me wrong, we can understand parts, and even how some of those parts interact, we simply have no way of comprehending the aggregate and its immense degree of complexity. We have systems milking the tiniest fluctuations in the system sifting out whispers of profit in a hurricane of transactional data. These systems interact with the existing trade ecology and the data dance just keeps growing new harmonics of feedback. Something as ham-fisted as screwing with signal timing would show up like setting off a nuke in nunnery.>/p>
In fact, the only effective way to hack the system would be to black box the entire system (good luck building that model on anything smaller than a big box at Lawrence Livermore), and messing with a tiny group of nodes in a financially interesting place. You'd need the same kinds of computers network resources as the one's doing the trading, and the model analysis would take tens of thousands of person hours and many millions of dollars. Unless you had some certainty of snatching many billions of dollars (before the existing environment simply networked around you and picked your financial carcass clean in the instant of time it takes the neurotransmitters to cross the synapses in your brain), your time would be better spent selling your IP to Wallstreet and cashing at a significantly lower levels of risk.
Of course there are adrenaline junkies who might do it for the risk, or the street cred among hackers... good luck on that, and you might want to purchase that chastity belt now so your stay at Club Fed doesn't include unwanted fraternizing. If you're at all interested in the current state of the networks that carry money check out this months WIRED article on AI, its truly enlightening. Oh, and for those who think they could walk away from hacking the financial network, just remember the people you're playing with... you'd be lucky not to end up an inventory of parts at a Mumbai transplant hospital.

Just as the flat earthers, at some point when the evidence becomes overwhelming, you just have to shake your head and say, "So sad, too bad."

We need to start adding criminal enhancements for stupidity. For everyone's benefit.
