    Damn it, it's not like there are 364 other days of the year where you could release your software.

    I think what you're missing is that missing christmas means that you miss something like half your annual revenue (may actually be only 30%). It may not affect MS financially so much because they're MS - you'll probably buy something from them, but that means Vista is delayed yet another year, and MS consulting can't sell Vista until spring, so that's some PR lost.

    Seconded. Also, stop working overtime - you want to be fresh for your interviews. If it were me (and I'm an evil bastard), I'd take longer lunches away from the crowd so they think I'm interviewing. Even better if I am.

    I'm constantly amazed by the tendancy of Slashdotters to just cut and run in the face of adversity. Quiting one job just because you don't get along with every single person in the organization is not a winning strategy cause, guess what?, you're not always going to get along with everyone. Try to be positive and find ways to work with the situation, not against it.

    There's a difference between not getting along with anyone and not being able to perform your job function because people refuse to help you (for whatever reason). If you're in an intractable position, then yes, it's a good idea to cut and run.

    I think the closest we're going to get to a "pervasive avatar" is a unified website where everyone can see how Jim Bob is doing in WoW, Vendetta Online, and GTA

    I'd like to see the ability to design your own character model, within limits (height requirements, opacity, grab points for hanging stuff off of it). You'd see people running around as a giant penis, but dammit, that's what some people want!

    Who in their right minds saves money? Once you have $10k in an account, the best thing to do is invest that money. Of course, that means you won't show up on the US savings rate, but who really cares?

    Personally I think my job would be much easier if my desktop monitor were a 45 inch LCD display running at 4096x2304, but that ain't gonna happen. Is it because my employers are a bunch of luddite bastards, or is it because they know what's better for me? I would argue the latter.

    I'll take option 3: cost benefit analysis.

    Well, the problem is, this decision does not advance that agenda. Instead of restricting the applicability of obscenity laws, it broadens them by allowing the fine folks of Bluenose, Georgia to reach out and prosecute someone completely outside their community. We can certainly discuss whether or not his idea sounds like a nice place to visit, but one thing's for sure - this particular bus ain't gonna get us there.

    That's why it should be incumbent on residents of a community to enforce their own standards by not downloading stuff that's obscene there! If you live in BlueNose, GA, then just don't go to analteens.com and that's that.

    You can get Oracle server for as cheap as $150 per named user, with a three user minimum last I checked.

    That's great until Oracle decides that each person to walk up to a kiosk needs to be a named user.

    Huh? Your system is set up so that all admins are root, or something?

    Admins are necessarily authorized to do a sufficient number of things that they are guaranteed access to a root shell if they want it. What it comes down to is this: do you trust your admins?

    you can still implement a policy that makes it a sacking offence to edit it.

    How is this better than logbash? They'll still get shells if they need them.

    To me, that's unacceptable. It's classic bait-and-switch.

    No, OpenBSD also produces OpenSSH. If you want to keep using OpenSSH, it may be a good idea if you sent them some money.
