    This is easy: The USA (and the rest of the world) are unable to enforce any sort of laws off-planet, so eros 433 is out of their jurisdiction. If eros wants to get their money, they can damn well go to eros 433 and impound the probe for nonpayment.

    it should surprise no-one if they extend legislation like the Patriot Act into civil domains such as the Internet.

    I doubt it. The Us Gubmint was unable to prevent publication of nuclear bomb theory after WW2 - this was while we were scared of Stalin getting a nuke of his own - so I doubt they'll be able to exercise any coersion over the Inet. Of course, most of the liberal media seems to be in the whitehouse's pocket...

    A police officer holds my life in his hands as well, given the proper situation, just like a pilot. And yet we don't pay them anywhere near the same salaries.

    That's because the cop just has to decide not to shoot you, while the pilot has to perform some fairly difficult activities exactly right in order to prevent you and 200 other people from turning into a stain.

    You can also use a domain hosting solution - my domain host also provides an outgoing server, so I don't have to deal with that particular brand of insanity.

    Sorry, but traffic offenses aren't even misdemeanors. They are 'administrative offenses', which is basically a non-criminal offense that relaxes due process requirements for traffic offenses. So no, speeding in itself is not a crime.

    they installed 4 Blade servers with 14 1U servers each with dual 2Ghz Xeon's and 2GB of ram each. Consolidated a 1600 Sq. ft room of Alpha servers to 2 Racks (well they could have put them all in 1, but they decided not to for some reason).

    Hmm, 2 blade servers * 14 blades * 2 cpus * 70W = 3920W. I think maybe they didn't want to scorch the ceiling.

    Here's an idea: shave off... maybe 1/10 of the "defense" budget and give it to schools. That should double or triple the income of most school systems at least....

    That won't do anything except inflate the salaries of the higher-ups. the teachers will still get shafted.

    Why would I need an IP tied to my webspace, anyway? Most people don't care enough to justify it, and it's more complicated than just running some shared servers with blogs, etc.

    Their up time average is an astounding 18 days!

    Well what do you expect? this is a Beta-quality OS - of course they're going to a: have crashes and b: update the system image rather frequently. No point in running a build with known fixed defects. better to load the version with fixed defects and find new ones.

    rev/speed limiters are already present on most cars

    And these rev limiters are there mainly to protect the engine from damage. Otherwise, why would my wrx have a 7000 RPM limit when I can't actually drive it that fast in 5th gear?

    Because you vioalte several laws every day. These are small things like driving 60 in a 55 and crossing against the light, but the laws were written with the assumption that not 100% of the violators would be known, much less prosecuted. Changing this changes a lot of things - how many rules do you have to follow in order to avoid crippling fines if every law currently on the books is enforced against you

    Since always? The only exception is for parents and legal guardians, and the school's rights in this case are very limited.

    They are, but this product is not licensed, it is sold.

    Yes you would - this would optimize your revenue. However, you have no right to expect the governemnt to exert special effort to help you do this.

    I may not like that some products come with restrictions, but I understand why companies do this and how it maximizes the number of people that can afford to buy the product.

    This is only a secondary effect - the main reason for a price structure is to maximise profit.
