Nope. The sensors detect the change in inductance of the loop and do a "presence / no presence" decision. Google "Reno A&E" for all the details on loop detectors. The "signal" from a loop will vary depending on loop size, shape (round, rectangle, diamond, quadrupole (figure 8)), length of the lead-in wires, depth of the loop in the pavement, height of the vehicle above the ground (ie your lowered honda civic might have a bigger signal than the 3/4 ton pickup with the off road lift kit. Vehicle speed will change the signal, as will alignment in the lane.

Therefore most cops are not "good people".

Cops (I'll blame senior management here) need to stop being so damn concerned about the reputation of the department, and start dealing with internal problems instead of trying to hide them. They also need to drop the whole "us vs them", "police vs civilians", "nobody really understands what we go through" bullshit. Do those two little things and they might start earning some respect. I'll be fair here and say that this isn't just a problem with the police. Any big organization can fall into the same trap; where protecting the organizations reputation overrides all other concerns. Example Catholic Church and Pedophile Priests.

I think you can divide into three sets. 1. Religious or Theist - believes that yes, god does exist. 2. Atheist - believes that no, god does not exist. 3. Agnostic - claims no knowledge either way, or thinks the answer is not knowable. I would classify myself as Agnostic, and probably most people who aren't religious are in fact Agnostic. Problem is that religious types tend to mistakenly classify everyone as either believer or non-believer, and will consider Agnostics to be no different from Atheists.

  21. Re:yes but there was a difference. on Steven Hawking Considering Move To Canada · · Score: 1

No, not really. My belief system (if you want to call it that) is to believe in things for which there is empirical evidence. I claim no particular knowledge of the existence or lack thereof of gods, mostly because there doesn't seem to be any meaningful way to prove or disprove the existence of supernatural beings. To prove that Gods do exist, I could create a God-o-meter and point it at the heavens, but an all powerful God could certainly put his invisible finger on the needle and make it not move. I also have no idea how to prove that gods don't exist. "Seek to convert unbelievers" - No, I have no great desire to make other people believe what I believe, and besides, converting people is possibly morally wrong. "Origin of the universe" - Well, the evidence seems to point to the big bang as the current best explanation. Before t=0, we have no evidence, so we can only conjecture.

"If you can burn oil to produce electricity to load a battery to turn an axle with a given efficiency then you can burn oil to turn an axle more efficiently. That's a simple fact."

Not true and/or true but irrelevant. Power plants and car engines are totally different, and, not surprisingly, power plants are much more efficient than your car engine. Power plants use efficient multi-stage steam turbines or which operate at near ideal conditions most of the time. Your car engine on the other hand needs to warm up to operating temperature when you first start it, accelerate, decelerate, idle at stop lights etc. An automobile engine has a theoretical maximum efficiency of 37%, and in the real world average about 20%. A thermal power plant can be as high as 60% efficient, and average is usually near maximum. Electric cars don't consume energy when stopped at a light, and with regen braking, can gain back some of the energy use to accelerate when they have to decelerate.

Bottom line, when you take into account all factors, including distribution losses and battery/charger losses, the electric car still produces about 1/2 the pollution of a gasoline powered car.
