I think this is a good thing to produce a cpu that "mops" the low end of the market. Look at the popularity of the celeron and now the AMD Duron. It will make intel worry a little bit and that's good for the market. I also liked how Via took over the chipset market from intel.
I do not understand why everyone is so excited. Microsoft will win on appeal anyway. The appeals court will rule that either Judge Jackson isn't computer literate and therefore not qualified to make this decision. Yes, it's ironic that a decision supported by hard-core computer nerds loses to the Microsoft point and clickies because the Judge doesn't know anything. But that's life I guess
I'm not surprised by Apple's sudden lack of UI commonsense. They completely fired the original UI team that made the Mac as _the_ standard for good UI design. Please see http://www.iarchitect.com/new.htm for another reason why Apple is going in the wrong direction.
I was able to do a side by side comparison with my PC with an sblive value and my brother's new Athlon (yes I sold him on the athlon:) with vortex 2 card and there's no doubt about it-sblive sounds so much better for midi
I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft took GPL code and used it in their products...and nobody would be able to do anything about it! So don't worry too much about these technicalities-it's just impossible to enforce these licenses because if the source is closed you just don't have any way of knowing what they are using
I don't care if there are 5 million reasons why you think that IE is the greatest browser in the universe. It's not going to be ported to linux. Ever. Let me repeat that. No IE for linux. So what do you do about it? 1) ditch linux because you feel that unless you have IE, everything will suck 2) brainwash yourself into thinking that IE sucks even though you just gave 5 millions reasons why IE rules 3) help out the mozilla project to make sure that it's a better browser than IE. Submit bugs, run it all day until you have to send a talkback report, read up on it by visiting mozillazine or mozilla.org, read the newsgroups-anything...heck maybe even check out the source code or design a cool skin for it. Mozilla is open source and designed by people who know how the web works so that it doesn't screw up under bad html (99% of all websites:))
it would certainly make things easier to use if there was only one UI. But that's not linux is all about even though alot of people like to delude themselves into thinking that linux can be easy to use.
not really. You could just play the DVD on Windows. The big question is what can one do on linux that you can't do on windows? Don't tell me 'well it doesn't crash' because that has nothing to do with the final result.
I wasn't talking about the look. Themes can't change the feel-the fact that Apple fired their entire original UI team to come up with something that copies the worst mistakes of Microsoft and Unix.
As far as looks go, yes it's a very unique look. Lots of artistic talent in designing the "look" with gratuitous usage of special effects that I'm sure rival Microsoft's animated paper clips (though you'll still want to turn them off after using it for 5 minutes). The feel hasn't changed much. It still uses the same windows and icons concept that has been around for 15 years-just cuter looking
ok that was quick. After reading this http://www.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=570620876&fmt=tex t I've decided that this drastic action is in fact justified. It's unfortunate for the innocent users as this kind of service is very expensive and other alternatives may not be available at their location.
I sympathize with @home (and especially for the many users). UCE is a very very difficult problem and if you think it will go away just by banning @home then guess what will happen when everyone dumps 56k and switches to DSL or cable modems? UCP for everyone! Then again, usenet is crap even without the spam
it's really hard to do on that end because the game companies that develop for windows will always have more money than you'll ever imagine. On the other hand, Loki can't port all the games by themselves. You need several companies doing what Loki does plus support from Redhat (because they have the $ and they 'make' the OS). That's just to get your feet wet. There are several game porting companies for the Mac, Bungie is very very innovative, Steve Jobs loves to say "games, games games" but even that platform doesn't have major traction in getting Windows games.

you have to think of apps that compel Windows users to switch to linux

um neither Wordperfect or any other their other apps (coreldraw, etc) are free
btw I'm a proud purchaser of Wordperfect 8 and I downloaded Corel Linux. Cross platform is good
Have you ever tried BeOS? (hoping for BeOS ports of Wordperfect and CorelDraw)
I guess it's because of all the linux hype that gives people a sense of "well we're in all the news and wall street so obviously we have to be better"
I can't stand the fact that I can't resume downloads from microsoft updates. Of course I can't stand alot of other things about Windows...

if the ball drops on New Years and you can only see it on TV...does it make a sound?
too bad they dumped it
Exactly the mac has real themes that Windows still doesn't have.

numeral X's sexiness...that's why it's called MacOS X -because it sounds like "mac ohs sex". I don't know how it will play in schools...
I think alot of people will stick with or upgrade to MacOS 9 because of this. Apple really threw out the UI completely
