At least it's accurate. Unlike the sensationalist ones we've gotten. Contrast this one with something like "Gluttonous blackhole devouring our universe. It's currently devouring a gas cloud but will it satiate its appetite?"
I recently tested Netflix. I was sorely disappointed with the quality of the video as well as the lack-luster audio quality. I quickly deleted my account within minutes of opening it
Not sure if you know this but I've noticed when I play Netflix movies it'll being streaming at low quality at first and then steadily improve once it buffers a bit. Chances are good if you were really disappointed with the quality you either had a crappy connection (it'll adjust quality for that) or you were just way too hasty. I've honestly had no complaints with mine and heck, we stream from a Motorola Atrix via HDMI to my tv.
And I definitely see the problems some of the other commenters had in similar situaitons - if you don't have the support of your management in a scenario like this you're fighting an uphill battle. In my case I had an incredibly helpful and understanding boss which made things much, much smoother than it otherwise would have been. Sure, I had to work some shit hours to make the bigger changes so as to not affect normal business but that's just the name of the game with a massive overhaul. Hell, I was feeling fortunate this wasn't a 24hr shop.
Anywho, definitely a great resume booster and does wonders for your confidence once you've conquered the beast. My advice is slow and steady and make sure you document all the new stuff.
I'm going on a hunch that his/her advantage is "(I'm an American abroad)".
Despite constantly requesting to be off mailing lists I still get the local advertisements and BS mail from previous residents. However, the trick to getting yourself off the bulk of the mailings is via: http://www.directmail.com/directory/mail_preference/Default.aspx
My best mentors were >40. And their philosophy was similar to yours. They had no desire to be some paper pushing manager. They wanted to get their hands dirty and had no problem being "team leads". They would often refer to the old adage "too many chiefs, not enough indians" which definitely seemed to be an issue in our particular company - there were nearly the same amount of managers as workers which just seems batshit to me. The best part was during layoffs they'd keep the managers on overhead and layoff the workers.
Seriously? There's a lot of potential here with this kind of tech being refined.
Imagine an architecture/engineering firm being able to program and automate the entire construction process with these things. Or build in modular chunks and have them assembled wherever they're delivered.
Take, for instance, if you take an exam and get a wrong answer even though it was based on your current book version at the time. However, by the time you get the grade back the book has been updated to correct that mistake. Having an old version to point to would help your case.
They can be updated, that means that facts can be redacted.
Ignoring most of your tinfoil hat aspect - that also means inaccurate information can also be updated to reflect new findings. This is generally considered a Good Thing (tm) in academia.
"Rule of thumb: If the calls seem lame or about preventable issues, and if the company won't pay extra for prevention, you're being abused."
Usually when those kind of calls are repetitive I tend to be unpleasant. That's a pretty good deterrant. But you've gotta gauge it obviously. I once had a guy call me around dinner to remind him how to copy and paste. But you know what, this guy ALWAYS wrote great letters of appreciation to my bosses so of course I walked him through it. Other times I get call from jerkoffs about similarly mundane stuff but they're asshats during the week - that's when it becomes "damn, don't know what to tell you. Maybe their server is down. Wait until the morning to see if it clears up..."
Ok, I'm probably going to sound like an ignorant jackass but how do you go about using a phone when someone calls you? Is there some sort of software or do people just text you? I've just never had any exposure around anyone with any sort of hearing impairment.
Tangential, but I can't say any amount of the bullying I received comes even remotely close to have benefitted my life later on. It just turned me from a social kid who loved people to one who became an introvert and egocentric.
If the implicit "makes you stronger" addage is supposed to apply here then stronger just means leaving yourself less vulnerable and being unhappy most of the time.
Pretty much the only people who said they came out better were the bullies themselves - plenty never realizing that that was their role to someone else.
So if you want to talk about stifling imaginations...
If your company had the budget wouldn't SSD be potentially a faster and more reliable form of backup?
At the rate you're backing up - if you bought one of those Oracle tape libraries wouldn't it almost be easier to just cart the whole damned rack out instead of transporting an incredible amount of tapes all the time? I know it sounds silly on the surface but I'd imagine the time spent handling each tape vs. some sort of quick-disconnect contraption for a rack would be more efficient.

...at least they had a warrant unlike some other countries we know...
No no, they're trying to prevent evil. Don't you remember their motto?

Seconded.

Amen.

If you're in America that statement would pretty much be illegal. Almost. Apparently only if you're over 40.

Give it time, grasshopper. It usually works itself out. It's +5 Interesting now...
In otherwords - the system is working as it should. :)
I suppose Earth could still be flat... it goes both ways.
I think the archival versioning is a smart idea.

If you had dissimilar hardware, blame your Purchasing department.
Seconded!

I applaud your humility, sir!
Wow, interesting read and great photos. Thanks
Crap, I feel old now.
Ahh, thanks! Article answers my question precisely. :)

I don't understand how this happens so often. I've (thankfully!) never encountered such crappy work environments.
Ok, I'm probably going to sound like an ignorant jackass but how do you go about using a phone when someone calls you? Is there some sort of software or do people just text you? I've just never had any exposure around anyone with any sort of hearing impairment.
Didn't the US have one of these recently that failed and plunged into the ocean? Just wondering if it's the same thing as before.

A couple things I'm wondering:

You know...if you already do all the hard work and essentially make it profitable. But hey, a million is a million: http://www.peta.org/features/In-Vitro-Meat-Contest.aspx
