I'm kind of surprised I haven't seen any comments on the bigger issue - the IT folks entrusted with this data who let data leak (or at least rumors of the content). As a system admin - if you're at that level you're already not trustworthy enough to keep that postion and would probably be reassigned depending on the severity. Understandably if it's something illegal then it needs to be report it but even still - discretion is still required. It's no one else's damned business.

Compare this to your HR person - would you like them to spill your SSN randomly here and there? Just because the guy is dead doesn't mean his data requires less care.

Anywho - as far as technical solutions 1) don't put personal stuff on a work computer, 2) even some web space and an ftp account should be nearly sufficient if you just need a place to store files remotely that isn't easily accessible.

  5. Not with the times. on 'Old School' Arcade Still Popular In NYC · · Score: 1

I think one of the things that turned me off from arcades was the archaic controls. There was rarely an attempt to deviate from the standard joystick and button configuration. Granted - this was a setup that could withstand a lot of abuse - it by no means is friendly on the wrists.

Additionally, something I noticed was deviating from games that encouraged you to play with friends. TMNT was a four player side scroller - how awesome was that? Even Daytona had the option to link at least 8 units together (probably more) which was a blast. And cheaper than the 5-dollar-per-ride go-karts.

I think the root of it is that the owners/decision-makers in the arcade industry just got out of tune with reality. My favorite games in the arcade to this day are Ballistics (Grin/Xicat) and Hyperdrive (Midway). Particularly hyperdrive because it provided an experience you simply couldn't find at home, whereas all the typical fighting games were exactly the same except for the joystick vs. a handheld controller like we've all gotten used to.

  6. Acer/Gateway/Emachines on The Recovery Disc Rip-Off · · Score: 1

I ran into this mess a few months back actually. User had a refurb emachine from Revonate. I ordered the recovery disks DIRECTLY from the emachines website. I get them and they're not pressed, they're burned and disk 2 appeared to not be finalized and could not be read when the software looked for it. I fought with emachines support for 2 weeks with them constantly saying "we do not support refurb machines, talk to Revonate" anytime I tried to explain "I BOUGHT THEM FROM *YOU* TWO WEEKS AGO."

I even talked with the VP at Revonate who insisted this was on emachines hands and the recovery media they offer was on the harddrive - yet we were dealing with, you got it, a failed harddrive.

What I finally had to do to even talk to a real person was file a BBB complaint to which a woman called basically saying "you get nothing" because it wasn't within the 14 day window, I shit you not, despite my repeated efforts to contact them HOURS after I had received the disks. I tried to dispute it further but BBB closed the issue and essentially said to hire a lawyer if I wanted to pursue it further.

All over a single ISO file they simply could have released to me or sent me a single disk.

At the end of the day I ended up just buying the client another copy of Windows and sent her on her way; me - days of time wasted and paying for a job out of pocket. Acer/Emachines/Gateway- one less client which may be a drop in the bucket, but I'm okay with that. Anything to never have to go through that mess again.

Oddly - I actually have an E71x sitting in my drawer - I went back to my 2860 Slide once ATT decided to call the E71x a smart phone and add a MANDATORY data plan of $40/mo whereas with my other phone it's $10/mo for the same data plan. I'll be the devil's adovacate on this one - but to an extent. I think to consider a web sales tax still based on a single locality is a bit silly. Make either a universal web tax rate (flat rate for all purchases from online businesses based in the U.S.) or make one specific to if was purchased domestically or foreign (based on billing or shipping address?). The drawback I see though is the advantage this gives foreign (non-U.S. in my case) markets, but some already have the advantage as it is with cheaper labor so perhaps it wouldn't be a major shift anyway.

My *personal* thoughts? Manning seemed to do this for the acknowledgment, why else open your mouth on such a severe volume of data leakage? Why else seek the approval of a guy like Lamo for your actions? Manning was dangerous - and very much ought to be regarded as a spy in my opinion. He wasn't trying to expose some specific injustice (except for the video) - he was blatantly hemorrhaging data using trusted credentials on a trusted network. Had he been of Middle Eastern decent and not just a young white guy this case would have already been over and buried in the eyes of the government.

And I can't blame Adrian for a second. 250k documents indiscriminately fired off IS a security risk that can get people killed. I could understand the video, but Manning was as much wanting notoriety as the article claims Adrian supposedly was. Why else carelessly brag about such a major operation?

Manning was a loose cannon and a liability even for Adrian. Had Manning been caught WITHOUT Adrian's help and those chat logs would have been found Adrian would have been just as liable as Manning - probably both locked up, labeled as terrorists, and never see the light of a courtroom. By Lamo reporting Manning he accomplished two main things 1) removed liability from himself, but also 2) brought even more light to the documents released. Who would have even looked for the leaked cables without stumbling upon them first? In essence he not only helped himself, but with the media attention also helped Manning's cause. If Manning's documents actually prove anything then none of this will have been in vain. If they unearth nothing then Manning leaked a bunch of garbage for nothing and is not only reckless but very, very stupid.
