  1. You're dismissing valid points. on Leopard as the New Vista? · · Score: 1

a flashy new interface that sacrifices usability to look interesting; ... Leopard doesn't have any of those problems (aside from some that don't like the look of the Dock, which is easy to change).

Really, because I'm looking at the dock preferences right now, and I don't see any way to switch from the stupid pale blue glow on a pale grey background and go back to the nice, easy to see, black triangle. I also don't see any way to re-enable the menu that allows me to drill down into a folder's contents and open any file with one click & hold action. I've been able to drill down into my filesystem via a menu since I started with a System 7 Apple menu. This is the first time in my 10 year history of Mac use that I cannot open any arbitrary file on my file system with one click. Now all I get is a retarded spring loaded folder. That "feature" alone is the most time wasting, frustrating aspect of the whole OS. Apple deserves to be lampooned for this in every article about Leopard until they fix it.

The dude may be a Microsoft shill, but only a zealous fanboy would dismiss the fact that he made a good point there. Since you've gotten me started, let me air a couple other gripes with Leopard.

AirTunes via FrontRow. Just like the new dock, the new FrontRow is flashy and new, but less functional where it really counts. That's horrible, because my iPod HiFi is my stereo system. I used to play music on my HiFi via my HDTV/Tiger Mac Mini. They're connected via my Airport Express. All I needed to do was pick up my Apple remote when I got home, go into FrontRow and play music. Leopard's FrontRow doesn't do AirTunes. Either I must boot my laptop and wait a minute or two anytime I want to hear music or settle for the crappy TV speakers.... Fantastic. Something that once worked beautifully is now broken.

Also notable: the play bar and volume controls are just gone in column view previews. You're forced to use QuickLook and you can't adjust the volume on anything without adjusting the volume for the entire system. Also, without the fwd/rwd buttons, you can no longer control playback speed and direction with a control click. It was taken out of QuickTime player a long time ago... Now it's gone from Finder. If they take it out of the browser plugin, that will be completely lost functionality. [Speaking of browsers... I just discovered Safari doesn't accept a drag and drop .mov file on the dock. You have to open a Safari window and drop it into there.... At least OmniWeb "just works"]

I really hope Apple fixes these issues, because although there are a few must have features, Leopard is also a downgrade in a number of respects. They intentionally removed a lot of functionality to force new eye candy on me and I don't like it. If they don't fix these things in a pretty timely manner, I'll be much less likely to run out and immediately BUY the upgrade next time.

Because QuickTime Streaming server is free/open source? Because QuickTime supports everything from Karaoke to Photoshop formats? Because tons of cameras record in QuickTime movie format? ... I could really go on here... for quite a while. QuickTime does waaaaay more than movie playback.

  6. Re:Sanctuary is an RIAA member label. on How Do You Find New Non-RIAA Music? · · Score: 1

I'm asking for honesty and accuracy in their listings... their label is NOT an RIAA label.

No, you're asking for Iron Maiden to get green "safe" tag even though their album sales generate income for RIAA members. Crying because Iron Maiden has a red "warning" tag because of it's distributor instead of it's label is beside the point. The RIAA makes money off of every Iron Maiden album sold, therefore their albums should be listed with red tags. I'm glad the site owners ignored you. I'm sure everyone that uses the site would be glad the site owners ignored you. For all I care, Iron Maiden can simply die with the other dinosaurs if they can't figure out how to become RIAA free.

  7. Sanctuary is an RIAA member label. on How Do You Find New Non-RIAA Music? · · Score: 1

If that's the case, then their site should correctly state the facts... They claim such bands to be RIAA members, or that their record labels are RIAA members... both are innaccurate.

Perhaps you should bitch to Amazon as well, because they also list Sony as the label. That's an even better reason to never listen to an Iron Maiden CD: Sony is the company best known here for illegally installing rootkits on user's PCs via audio CDs. I wouldn't play a damned Iron Maiden CD if you gave it to me. Who knows what other virus/trojan/rootkit Sony might have quietly slipped into the production line.

They should claim that production or distribution is done through an RIAA member instead. Their method is an outright lie... no matter how you want to spin it

Label formerly known as Sanctuary? Wow, look at that: Sanctuary is on the RIAA member list. How odd...

The site is more of a tool for them (RIAA Radar) to make money through their Amazon partnership via sales of the CDs they list.

Sorry sport, but the money comes from the buyer, not the website. By your logic, I should never use Google because they advertise the RIAA's music to those who search for it. I can't stop people that actively seek out and knowingly support the RIAA with *MY* purchasing habits. I can use tools like the RIAA Radar to prevent the RIAA from receiving any money from ME.

So again, tell me why the site is ok?

RIAA Radar has prevented hundreds of my dollars from going to RIAA affiliates. It quickly identifies bands that have any sort of affiliation with the RIAA.... like Iron Maiden.

Bands can come clean. I'll buy an album from an artist as long as that album is RIAA free, even if other albums from the same artist are not. I suggest if Iron Maiden wants my money, their next album should be 100% RIAA free.

  8. Good on 'em on How Do You Find New Non-RIAA Music? · · Score: 1, Interesting

the CD production/distribution is done by a big label.

That's sorta the point of the RIAA radar. Either the RIAA makes a buck, or they don't. I'm sorry if you find that misleading, but RIAA affiliated is RIAA affiliated. You can't be mostly RIAA-free. You are or you ain't. I don't want a single one of my dollars going to the RIAA members. Period.

An extra layer of security doesn't hurt, especially against the bugs we don't know about yet - most bugs/security flaws weren't know about/understood prior to being fixed, and prior to fixing, they could have been exposed.

I disagree. Why should I have to create an access control/permissions system when any proper database includes one? If the database's permissions system and security model fails over and over again, why continue using it? Wouldn't it make more sense to blame the vendor and change databases rather than blame the IT staff and patch the hole with a bandaid solution like a firewall?

In true PHB style though, firewalls are standard procedure. All firewalls effectively do is force all your traffic through some ridiculous port 80 xml-rpc/soap solution written in house that is going to be slower and just as prone to security holes, if not moreso. The only reason it seems secure is because it isn't a "standard" entryway that script kiddies are attacking. Security through obscurity is not security.

All you really have is a false sense of security until you're pWn3d by a dedicated attacker. In the meantime, you've ruined the efficiency of the network because applications that might have been able to listen for updates must resort to constant polling instead. You bandwidth needs explode as a result and that costs you lots of money.

Anyway, pretty darned close to what you want. The Nokia antenna is legendary. I've never been able to get a signal indoors at work before I purchased my N95. It does the Youtube/Flickr bit out of box. If you want facebook, you'll need to install Shozu. Installing Shozu will give you the additional benefit of geotagging with the built in GPS. The web browser is even built on the open source Safari code base. Nokia has a podcast app. The headphone jack is also A/V out, so get some video glasses to go with it. Get a folding bluetooth keyboard and it might only leave your pocket for those 5 megapixel snapshots. It syncs your Mac address book and calendars nicely with iSync. It's pretty much the most awesome phone available on the market. It'll set you back about 700 bucks though.
