is for apple to allow OEM's to bundle a crippled version of iDVD which will only work with the manufacturers drive (like so many OEM cd burner software bundles). Apple could then licence each manufacturer/bundler to make extra money on the software, rather than buying it directly from Apple. After all, the margins on hardware aren't that great, and no-one is going to buy a brand new Mac just for the superdrive, especially if you just got one a few months back.
Another possible solution is for Apple to release their own external FireWire DVD-RW superdrive product and bundle iDVD with it.
There is other software that will work with 3rd party external drives, Final Cut Pro does as far as I know (but I could be wrong).
Also, couldn't Apple allow the sale and installation of Apple branded SuperDrives a Apple stores and authorised dealers as upgrades for G4 Macs? It's not as if there is a shortage of these drives at the moment. That way they could sell them at whatever cost they wanted.
I know these are not great solutions, the best solution would be for Apple to allow this kind of thing to happen and not cripple their software in this way, but hey, it's probably not going to happen.

Although, on a philiosophical level I do feel that many companies who use open source software like bind, apache, perl, etc. when go on to restrict their own software and goods.
How many record label companies use such software and then cry when we want fair use protected for sharing their music? It's a moral transaction. Restrict the environment, whether it's the operating system or the business model of those using it, in which the software can be used to exclude those who exclude us.
Wouldn't you like to stop companies who purpitrate stupid software patents like BT with Hyperlinks using open source software unless they buck their ideas up?
is a killer app, a game which isn't available on another platform, which takes advantage of the special properties which open source and linux operating systems can offer... like really long uptimes... like keeping the game on in the background all the time in a minimal mode, so that it acts likes a server using p2p for playing (like doom3) when you're not playing it.
a massively multiplayer elite-a-like? a massively mutliplayer first person perspective action/RPG based in a bladerunner type city?
expandable using user programable add-on modules?
Oh, and release it under a license which doesn't allow for ports to non open-source operating systems:-)

The "Mars - God of War" music by Gustav Holst is one of my fave pieces of classical music. The tone was just dark enough to set the stage for War. Many films use place holder music until the score is ready, I for one hope that they keep this.
is it me, or do the Shuttle PC's get a lot of free advertising on slashdot. more so than any dell, ibm, etc. equipment. In fact the only other manufacturer that seems to get as much is Apple.

Eventually people nned to buy a current system. The best time to do so is now. Once a console has been released and then discounted (to rip off the earlier adopters) it's worth buying.
I rate the Xbox as better than the PS2, but not enough software is out there yet. People are still going nuts for MGS2 on the PS2, but it takes like a day to finish it on your first time out.
Buy an Xbox/PS2 and be done with it.

one thing I sure that no one has mentioned yet is that Sony haven't released the Bluetooth memorystick for the Clie yet. That was one of the reasons I got rid of mine. Moving over to the Palm m515 with a bluetooth card is much easier than hanging around having to use the IR modem on my Ericsson T39 and the Clie.
