  1. POSIX 0? on Sirius in Negotiations With Apple · · Score: 1

You mean "that's the best wordplay on /. since POSIX time 0"?

If you did mean that, then I doubt that I will read anything remotely as clever until at least 2038-01-19T03:14:07Z.

  2. My Problem on Blank Keyboard · · Score: 1

My problem is that I use an American keyboard, but I switch between the US and Swedish keyboard setup.

I need the Swedish setup to access the å, ä and ö keys.

The problem is that it also switches some other keys around such as (, ), +, = and others. I use these keys, but not often enough to automatically switch in my brain where they are. So I keep screwing up when I try to type those keys. Both when I use the U.S and the Swedish setup.

If it wasn't for that I would be a much better typist. But I'm afraid that I'll never master that.

  3. price differention on FTC Recommends ISPs Disconnect Spam Zombies · · Score: 0

Make Email an opt in that the user have to pay a small amount to use.

Normal users won't purchase that option.

The money saved by not having to combat zombies as much may be so substantial that the base cost plus the Email opt in is substantially less than what you pay today.

The same could be done for http (so you can't host a web server). Ideally they should block the protocols, not the ports.

And please don't say "I shouldn't have to pay extra to host a mail or web server". If you feel tempted to do that, then read the third paragraph again.

Synchronization for a mobile device has another main requirement, robustness when the connection to the server is lost. A mobile device has to gracefully handle when the owner runs down into the subway.

  6. Why is JavaScript used instead of Java? on AJAX Buzzword Reinvigorates Javascript · · Score: 1

Can someone enlightened tell me what the advantage is of using JavaScript over Java (with the assumption that Java would be installed on all machines)?

And don't flame me for using Java and JavaScript in the same sentence. I know that they are two different languages.

I'm guessing that the reasons are:

    1) Java is actually not installed everywhere.
    2) JavaScript is easier to get going with. You can use your existing web authoring environment and just add a few scripts that you copy paste from somewhere.
    3) JavaScript is more light weight.

While, I understand these reasons, I think that they could have been overcome.

I feel as if VHS beat Beta.

Na ne no na na na na oooooh ooooh bidi bidi badaaang.

    Please let me know.

  9. An alternate approach on New Phone Service Promises to ID Songs · · Score: 1

I believe that they are using some type of sound recognition system.

An alternative approach would be to have your central server tuned in on all the radio stations.

And then when a caller calls in all the server has to do is find the channel that matches the song that comes through the phone. That can probably be done with very good precision.

I'm not sure, but I believe that most radio stations have lists of all the songs they play and when they played it. So then you can find the song.

Some radio stations also send out the song title for display on special radios. I forget what that technology is called (sorry).

This is possibly so simple that it could be set up by a private person without a lot of financial means.

The workers say: There are other ways to save that amount of money. The managements reply will be great. What are they? Will do them too.

  14. Apple is all about spectacular announcements! on Apple to Use Intel Chips? · · Score: 1, Insightful

Apple is all about spectacular announcements!

And if they announce a machine based off of any Intel technology I'd be more "Why?" than "Wow!".

If I was Apple I'd be far more interested in creating a machine based on the CELL processor.

It is fast. It is cheap (at least it should be considering it is in the PS3). It is not compatible with the PC market. It is based off of POWER which will make it easy for Apple to use it.

And finally, the CELL is _sexy_.

Photoshop seems to be a very important benchmark for Apple. If they go with CELL that has one main CPU and 8 auxilliary CPU's (and with Photoshop being suitable for multiprocessor systems) the CELL would likely "kill" any Intel platform in benchmarks.

Although Windows is flawed in this respect I must admit that I'm a computer professional that has been around for a while, and I didn't foresee that we would get these massive problems. I used Windows 95 and although I complained about lots of stuff it never entered my mind to say "this is going to be vulnerable to worms and spyware".

So that is a bit of an excuse for Microsoft.

But that doesn't change the fact that this situation pi**es me off.
