  1. .NET over J2EE any day on J2EE vs. .NET in Productivity Comparison? · · Score: 1

I've worked with both platforms for years now. .NET is definitely matured, it's simply the next logical step in the evolution of VB, ASP, and MFC, although somewhat hybridized now. Depending on your preference, it may be quicker to develop in Java, as C# is just as much if not more effort. But VB has finally matured into a respectable language, and provides for truly rapid development. And for all you JavaBean lovers, stop wasting your time. Visual Studio .NET is definitely a good match for its competition, and .NET provides "components", which parallel beans, and make more sense IMHO. Oh yes, and then there's web services. Did I mention it all runs on Linux?

  2. Flamebait, I'm sure... but VB kicks ass now. on Running a Research Lab on Free Software? · · Score: 3, Insightful

It wasn't true until .NET, but now I have to say, after using about 1/4 of the languages out there (and that's still a lot), VB has truly matured. I'd say that for anything except embedded software, or that which simply must work on *ix, VB is probably the best choice overall. Consider things like ease of use, learning curve, cost per hour per programmer, and it makes some sense.

I highly doubt I'll upgrade it for years to come... If I actually used it for anything other than network services, maybe I'd keep it more up to date.

  6. Hydro on Your Most Damage-Resistant Hardware? · · Score: 1

My primary Windows server spent quite a while outside exposed to the elements. It's an old Dell Dimension XPS-T800 with an SB Live 5.1 and WDC Caviar hard drive. It was outside in the Boston summer heat, the rain in the fall, and then the beginning of the winter snow. I brought it in and the exposed metal parts of the case like the back were a little corroded but not rusty. Everything in the computer functions fine still months later. The surprising thing is it continued to work during torrential downpours. Why did I do it? I wanted a Logitech QuickCam to watch my neighbor's yard...

So someone out there could, in theory, sign others certificates. But I wouldn't be too surprised with Microsoft owning VeriSign if, even if it works, there's some policy you agreed to saying you would never do such a terrible thing.

  14. Sony 18" DVI LCD on DVI Flat Panels? · · Score: 1

The best DVI-enabled LCD flat panel I could find about a year ago this time was the Sony SDM-M81, an 18.1" dual-input DVI/VGA flat panel LCD. The only gripe I have about it is its contrast ratio, only 300:1, which isn't that great with movies or games, but is just fine for computer work. They may even have some newer, better (cheaper?) models now.

Websphere may be open source, at the HTTP side (read: apache), and IBM likes to tell you what makes their stuff tick, sure..
