I still think the weight should fall on the shoulders of the clec to provide a good enough dsl package to lure people in if thats what it should take.
I just tend to be of the thinking that if you have line access you need to be able to make packages that work for your company. If its means only offering dsl if you have phone service as well that is both the ilec and clec's right.
Then again they just keep me in the server room for a reason;)
I work for a CLEC in the US and I really don't see why thats necessary. I'm sure we would offer a discount to customers who purchased phone service and DSL from us, the ILECs should be allowed to sell whatever packages they want as well. Allowing the little guy access to the lines is one thing, but regulating how they can sell their packages is too much.
Perhaps I've just become somewhat biased from my college experience, but in a freshman english class I don't believe 95% of my classmates would have cared to read the others work. Even if they did, being an introductory english class, who are they to be offering criticism?:D
I work do some work for a southern Illinois based CLEC http://www.gettelco.com that is offering services in the metro east. Currently we don't offer residential service, although we're working toward that goal so hopefully soon. Anyway where in the area are you? If you're on the Illinois side of the river there aren't many options yet. I do believe Mcleod does offer some services in the area, but there just aren't many alternatives yet. Both SBC and Verizon if you go a little farther south in Illinois really ream you for intralata calls.
Don't forget too even if you make your point and are taken back in, it will be to finish whats on the table but your days are numbered. Most managers wouldn't keep someone around who's going to just walk out again when they're in a pinch. Work the time you're paid for and go home.
I really really enjoyed Snow Crash and Cryptonomicon so I'm anxious to get my hands on it. I'll admit the description doesn't sound as appealing as the others, but I've gotta' read it anyway.
Plenum is good but the rest of the post scares me man.:D Wiring a building is an investment and there is absolutely no reason to half-ass the job. The standard is to use 2 pairs and have 2 unused, not run another signal, or god forbid, even power over. If you do that your cable probably isn't going to qualify over 10Mbs if you put it on a certifier. As far as splicing....just dont. Even with an actual connector meant for this it still kills the signal so quick, I can't even imagine what some hand done rigged splice would do. It doesn't sound like he needs a high performance lan, but just be aware such techniques are bad if you do....
I've never used this product before but alot of WISP running friends have. http://www.ethersplit.com/ They shoot service to the house via wireless then use it to share it out. Maybe it would help you out. A business class dsl account might be more suited or at least make a nice addition.
Seriously consider more backbone, thats sure not much for that many people.
Do you think the DMCA and other new restrictive laws dampen the spirit of hacking and will stifle innovations or are they a necessary evil of the age that we live in? Do you think many of these things would have happened anyway though even if the DMCA had always existed?
"they reside on a specific college's internal computer network, known also as a "local area network."
I can see tomorrow's press relase now.
"The RIAA today fired its first salvo of lawsuits at businesses using LANs. The people who run these Local Area Networks know full well what they are doing, operating a sophisticated network designed to enable widespread music thievery. The lawsuits we've filed represent an appropriate step given the seriousness of the offense. We will continue to shutdown LAN's and protect our artists' rights."
But seriously whats the point? I thought half the point of open source software was to have it reviewed for flaws. So what if the Indian government is given the source code, what will they do with it that could really be all that benificial? I understand there are alot of coder farms there, but....
I really hope sometime I get to see the dmca used by a consumer against the record/movie/big software industry. I'm not sure how it would best be done, but there has to be a way to make them hate it just as much:)
Yeah thats what sucks, the local stations aren't carried by directv or dish as a package, the closest is st louis and thats like 80 miles away. So since they don't offer a local package I could go with the national nbc, etc which would make me very happy since I could watch the simpsons and the xfiles, but they local stations won't sign off. Somehow I suspect the owner of my apartment building won't be happy with me putting up a 100 foot tower to try getting them that way either:)
I've got a dish because cable sucks. I live in the middle of a small college town built in the woods. I can get a super fuzzy cbs if I'm lucky, otherwise the antenna is just useless. DirecTV doesn't offer local channels and the local channels won't sign off to allow me to have national channels or whatever, its really annoying
