I'm looking to hear from both junior 'careerists' in their 20s who have concrete goals, and the older folks in this field who have established careers and have an opinion about this.
Jeez... just become I'm not im my 20's any more I have to be grouped in with the "older folks?" How depressing.
For those who are interested in things such as white papers on the technology, go to American Technology Corp. website. I used to work there... the article does not do it justice.
I see a lot of bitching in these posts about requiring a license for a machine that doesn't run MS-ware, but maybe it's cheaper that way. I mean, buying an individual license for each machine that runs the stuff might actually cost more than that the bulk license that includes other machines as well.
I bought a house back in '96. Since then, the powers that be have redone their assessments. My property taxes have more than doubled, are currently running about 3x the local income taxe rates, and are growing at 3x the rate of inflation.
I'm now paying more in city, state, and property than I am in federal taxes... The property taxes, per month, exceed what I used to pay in rent. And I'm actively looking to flee this area of the country (PA).
Those of us that live in California should thank God for Prop 13.
Speaking of sprinklers... fire will kill your servers, but water will too. See if you can get the building's normal sprinkler system turned OFF for your server room, and have it replaced with something more electronics-friendly (Haylon?).
Our data center uses a non-liquid fire extinguishing system made by Ansul that will set off an alarm warning anyone in the room to get out, then it releases an O2 displacing mixture of inert gases (mostly N2). Much better than water.
But wait... When I play music sound travels through the air to other peoples' ears! Better get a bill mandating encryption on air, or at least locking down people's ears so they don't participate.
For the cost of the liquid nitrogen and the precautions needed to handle it safely you could just go out and by a faster CPU and motherboard. You're not running a supercomputer.

Negative karma presumably means reincarnation as CowboyNeal.
I would be more inclined to think it means reincarnation as John Katz.
I couldn't find semiconductor-based refrigeration systems on the web, but I'm not sure what you call them!
Peltier Junction
The lack of this key feature renders the machine dead in the water. Next.
Just burn your MP3s to CD and play them on the L7HD. Problem solved.
Somewhere in downtown EAST ORANGE, a CUB SCOUT TROOP is SLASHDOTTING a HORTICULTURAL WEBSITE...
Cub Scouts are in Dens and Packs... Boy Scouts are in Troops.
You forgot the ultimate in dark movies, Schindler's List.
I don't know if you can find it, but SAM on the commodore 64 did a good job with that by default......
SAM rocked! It could even sing the Star Spangled Banner in perfect key. It spoke more understandably than most of the stuff on the PC now.
Only operate your computer in a large walk-in freezer, or in Arctic areas.
But then the LCD will stop working.

Just don't take a flash picture of it or it will explode.

How come Microsoft never included any kind of antivirus program per default in any windows package?
They did. Plus! for Windows 98 came with McAfee.
CNN has an article today listing what IDG condiders the top 15 notebooks.
I think that secretly videotaping babysitters for the purpose of monitoring their performance doesn't fall into that category.
Unless your babysitter is inviting her boyfriend over while you are gone. Then you're in trouble.
(Personally, I was holding out for an alien that preferred M&Ms.)
Read the book. It's M&Ms in there.

Already have a solution to that one.

I just can't seem to get the theme for Junkyard Wars out of my head after reading this article.
