The problem is, as I see it, that if support is one of the cornerstones of OSS then "open support" as detailed above would kill companies like RH whose bulk income is support contracts.

A very good point that i hadnt thought of. Its funny you should mention Redhat and linux, because a majority of the time when i need help with something i hop onto irc and go to irc.openprojects.net's server and go to #redhat and ask questions. In fact one of the main reasons i go there is because that there is people who work for Redhat who hang out in the room, and are very willing to help people. I suppose as long as there is a non-techie crowd out there, or just people who want low maitenence in genral will still pay for the support.

Well you have 2 ways to look at it then. it will either have to be able to diable it in the browser (which would be prefferable to me) or disable it through the website its self. now it seems to me that if M$ thinks it can make money off of it (ie: paying websites to have your browser advertise M$), they arent going to be putting any options to disable it in their browser (unless of course there is some huge public outcry, which i dont see happening). the other option of disabling it through the website would just be a really big pain in the ass for whatever website you go to. personally i will stick with mozilla as im sure there will be a way to keep this from happening. note: i used Internet Explorer as an example, because that is the majority of the people it will be affecting.

How do you create a competative marketplace with a service that already exists as monopoly (partly because of the nature of the resources involved)?

it really is a monopoly that the telco's have. ido tech support for a living and talk to customers everyday who are having line issues and the telco is calling these people up and saying if you stay with it will take another week before we can get you fixed, but if you quit your current service and go with us, we will have you up and running tommorow, all you have to do is say the word. the company i work for is right now involved in litigation for this practice, they almost force people to use their service. now on the flip side of that, if i were going to get dsl it would be directly through the telco, so i didnt have to mess with a middle man like my company. but then i dont think i would be stupid enough to get dsl...
