    Apple has been expanding their market significantly, which means only 25-50% of their computer sales are to existing Macintosh owners. (and the brand loyalty is ~ 81%, so despite teh complaints, they won't defect). Most consumer level video equipment is now USB. iPod has been USB for quite a while now. If you're a PC switcher, any external drives are probably also USB. If you need firewire video or audio, you're probably in the pro market. Johnny iPod doesn't care if he has firewire when he's writing up his term papers.

    It's open in the same way SPARC is open. If you own a fab plant, you can produce your own SPARC chips. If you own an overclocked celeron, you can't update the microcode and turn it into an 8-core niagara.

    Likewise, if you design/manufacture cell phones, you can put Android on it (instead of symbian or windows mobile or some other linux variant). If you're an end user, it doesn't matter.

    ZFS uses copy-on-write at the block level, so a snapshot takes no space, so the question doesn't really apply.

    Barack Obama supports Linux. I did some freelance work for his North Carolina campaign headquarters, settting up a gentoo box for use as their intranet server. I met BO and talked about linux and modernizing the Federal Government, access to information, etc. He'll probably be a very linux-friendly administration. It may not be year of the linux desktop yet, but it will be year of the linux whitehouse.

    You're ignoring the government's implicit (now explicit) backing of fannie mae/freddy mac which enabled more risk taking and distorted the market. Alan Greenspan testified to that effect in 2004/2005. You're also ignoring the part about the government (Bush, Clinton, and congress) encouraging more loans to low income/minority/subprime borrowers.
