The OS X keyboard preferences are for a specific keyboard, NOT every keyboard. You can swap the das keyboard alt/windows keys without affecting the laptop keyboard layout.
the usb drive goes to sleep. This is with a WD e something or other HD, and I replaced the nslu2 OS with debian. I don't know how the stock OS is configured wrt spinning down.
I bought a NSLU2 for fun last year -- ARM based, 266 mhz, 32 meg ram, 2 usb ports -- and promptly installed debian. Those specs are better than my desktop from 10 years ago, but I would prefer more ram and spu cycles. I've been looking at the QNAP 209/II (500mhz arm, 128/256 meg ram, 3 usb, 2 sata) and the the Thecus 2100 (600mhz arm, 128 meg ram (upgradable to 512), 3 usb, 2 sata). I'm not sure how well debian currently supports the qnap 209 though.
the windows NT kernel is fine. Moving to BSD or linux, or QNX etc won't improve it. OS X wasn't just a move to BSD, it was also a move to OO via Cocoa. The toolbox/Carbon is/was strictly procedural, much like the Win32 api. DotNet is OO, but so was MFC.
with a couple USB ports and 64 meg of ram (or 32 + swap), it could also do SAMBA, NFS, SSH, LAMP, SMTP,... a very useful multipurpose, low power device.
I've never used wine to run windows programs. However, I have used the source code as a form of documentation/verification while doing win32 programming. How do you feel about that?
the GPL 3 convinced me to use a BSD-style license for my projects. I want to share the code, not enforce political views I disagree with.

After taking a liking to egg creams, I tried mixing coke + a dash of milk a few times. Not horrible, but kind of pointless.

Must be a total coincidence that he also wrote berkeley yacc. (And a total coincidence that he works at Sun.)
Computer Modern. It's been better than the default MS stuff for 25 years or so.
BSD yacc vs GNU Bison.
Consider ... BSD code. There are plenty of instances where BSD code was relicensed as GPL and changes weren't given back under the BSD license.
