    Interesting example... (virtually) every tex binary is built with web2c which converts the TeX WEB/Pascal source code to C. Literate Programming and WEB are both mindshare failures.

    The first version of ed was written in assembly language on paper. It was then manually assembled to octal opcodes and burned to ROM/BIOS. It could then be used to edit itself.

    ask Jamie McCarthy over at slashcode.org. Slashdot is 6 servers: 4 of them serve cached content, 1 serves dynamic (perl) content, 1 runs mysql (a custom version). When a logged in user reads a story, front page, etc, the db is queried for the user account and preferences, everything else comes from cached html files. An AC reading doesn't even require a database hit.

    but the reality is, testing, getting regulatory approval, the risk of lawsuits, and (in the US) the health insurance industry are responsible for high drug prices. It sounds like these researchers are suggesting we can save money by testing drugs on 3rd world, uneducated "volunteers". About what I'd expect form the British.

    slashdot uses a very customized version of mysql and a LOT of caching. Remember a few months back when threaded comment posting was disabled for 24+ hours so they could rebuild the comment index?

    most doctors spend their time writing prescriptions for drugs a patient has seen advertised on tv. If I need a prescription for Fukitall, that's fine. If I have a couple odd symptoms that aren't explained by a 5 minutes of googling, that's not fine.

    how would ya write an OS in Java? I guess you've have to have an OS-OS that runs the interpreter and provides all the low-level stuff that...

    Some ARM processors have support for native Java bytecode.

    Linux audio/video support is much better than Windows audio/video support (I'm sure we've all had the frustration of dealing with unsupported hardware). I suggest installing the real-time linux patches to decrease latency.

    If an artist only writes one or two good songs for every 15 they release, they suck. Why are you buying their shit anyway?

    1. Greatest hits/box sets: These often include a couple new/unreleased songs. If you are a fan and own all the original songs, it's silly to buy a new CD for 2 new songs.
    2. Compilation CDs of various artists, soundtracks, etc. (again, new songs from a variety of musicians, you might only be interested in a few of the songs).
    3. re-releases of old material: In a grasp for even more money, records from the 60s and 70s are being repackaged with outtakes.
    4. Singles: Some bands release CD singles backed with outtakes or live recordings.
    5. iTunes exclusives: They have a fair amount of stuff you can't even get on CD
    6. Special Guests: a lot of rap/hip hop music (if you can call it that) features other people.
    7. Remixes: house/techno/trance music...

    C-Span's argument that they ought to be allowed to pan the room and take congressional "reaction shots" seems idiotic to me. Who gives a crap what their reaction is? What's important is what's going on at the damn speakers podium, and I don't want to miss any of that because some jackass producer thinks that I'm interested in what the redneck representative from Virginia is flicking at his new Muslim archenemy.

    everything you mentioned (LaTeX, python, web stuff, etc) can be done in Windows. Install cygwin, mktex, TeXnic Center, and you're golden.

    I've tried dual (or even triple) booting in the past and it's the worst of both worlds. However, virtualization lets you run side by side and leverage the particular advantages of each environment.

    Zune is a failure vs Ipod because consumers don't want to deal with DRM everytime they want to listen to something, especially when there are hundreds if not thousands of music players that will play non DRM files. Including the Ipod.

    The Zune plays non-DRM mp3, WMA, and AAC files.

    I've been reading about Hans since the murder indictment, but haven't really found much besides technical details of ReiserFS. What kind of behavior is he known for that would cause people to avoid him, or his products?

    It's ResierFS. Compare that to ext(2/3), HPFS, NTFS, HFS, XFS, ZFS, BFS, notice a pattern? You don't have to be a cynic to think maybe he's a little too interested in drumming up support for his consulting business. Obviously, it was successful or we wouldn't be seeing /. stories about him.

    More importantly, ReiserFS is developed primarily by Reiser/Namesys. If they dropped suport and moved on (or got arrested), nobody would be left to maintain it.

    Novell is not the hypothetical patent holder in these scenarios -- MS is. That argument is cute when applied to SCO, but irrelevant here.

    Due to patents, encryption, and other artificial limitations, many GPL and FOSS projects include "illegal for export" encryption code and "might be patented in your country" algorithms ("wink wink, only enable this functionality if it's legal for you to do so!").
