However, thanks to HIPAA, Sarbanes Oxley, and various other regulations, having unencrypted email transmitted or stored outside your intranet is a huge legal liability in many cases. I've heard that google may be releasing a rackmounted gmail appliance (like their search appliance) that is integrated with their beta calander.

Macintosh was in the same situation, perhaps even worse, back in the 90s. System 7 had a lot of itnernal problems, scalability, no protected memory, cooperative multitasking, etc. Apple spent a lot of time and money with alternative kernels -- Copland/Gershwin/Taligent, etc, before they went with NeXT (and emulated/classic support for legacy apps).

While MS is spending money and delayed, I doubt they are in as bad a shape as Apple was. XP, even 2K are stable operating systems. What will Vista offer? More Eye Candy?

Michael Jackson/Sony own the publishing rights to the Beatles songs. That's an income stream for sheet music, reprinted lyircs, royalties, etc. However, the royalties are split with the composer (McCartney/Lennon/Yoko etc).

In the early 60s, the Beatles traded publishing rights to Northern Songs in exchange for a minority ownership of the company. In 1969, Northern Songs was bought by ATV. In 1985, ATV sold the publishing rights to the Beatle's music to Michael Jackson, who later sold half of it to Sony (to support his pedophilia addiction).

The OpenStep specification was a collaboration between NeXT and Sun. OpenStep ran on Solaris (over XWindows), HP/UX (over XWindows), NeXT hardware (as a complete OS), x86 hardware (as a complete OS), and Windows NT (over the windows GDI).

Solaris eventually decided to go with Java. If you look at the early Java Framework, you can see the OpenStep influence.

I used and supported Macintoshes through the 90s. If MS was sending "fuck you" messages, then so was Netscape, Adobe, Claris, and even Apple. "Option-command-escape" was just as common as "alt-control-delete". Word 5.1 (for Macintosh) was one of the nicest word processors I've ever used.
