  1. Re:Why color? on TI-84+C-Silver Edition: That C Stands For Color · · Score: 1

Nope. I hadn't forgotten about them, as I had never seen one or heard of them until just now. Back when I saw a lot of TIs (i.e. because I was in high school or college), I only ever saw 83s, 84s, 85s, 86s and 89s.

Apparently there was even a worse calculator than that, too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TI-80

    Learned something new today!

You can play some pretty darn decent games on a TI-89. More importantly, you could do that *at school* if the teacher isn't paying enough attention to what you're doing. I played *so* much Tetris in calc in high school (well, a variant of it where blocks fell if they weren't supported, so you could get up to 14-row combos if you were good and lucky.)

Bet the new color screen will make games way better.

The real wtf is why'd they name this something indicating it's a variant of an *84*? 84s were slightly-upgraded 83s, the crappiest calculators they made! (Heck, the Basic variant they supported, had support for exactly 26 variables, named uppercase A through uppercase Z. It was a joke.)

You will note that I basically agreed with everything you said. (Other than my sarcasm quotes around "crime", which I will stick to.) Yes, it was a "crime" at the time. Therefore, pardoning would be silly, and wouldn't help much with anything, given Turing's long dead, he wouldn't care much. Officially retconning the very existence of the "crime" out, though, while it would do just as little to help Turing, would send the strong message, "we feel this was a terrible idea and are sorry we used to think otherwise." They wouldn't do anything "to make the masses happy", they'd be doing it, at least hopefully, because they *agreed* with those masses and wanted to show their agreement. Yes it was a crime at the time. Yes, the people responsible for sentencing the dude to punishment did exactly what the law said they should have done. But... so?

  14. Agree complete on New Call For Turing Pardon · · Score: 5, Insightful

An official "pardon" for a joke of a "crime" would just legitimize the "crime", and say "it's ok to be gay, but only if you're a brilliant scientist". The above declaration would, on the other hand, send a much stronger message, and would actually mean something.

Sicktime distinct from vacation or generic PTO, that is. The answer is still the same, though, and should be pretty obvious: if you only get a certain amount of sicktime (40 hours a year, in my case), you would want to save it for when you really needed it. I do stay home if I'm feeling really terrible, but if I think I can work, I go in, because otherwise I'm blowing a whole 5th of my yearly allotted go home sick time.

  23. There are no phones anywhere in development on Ask Slashdot: Do You Still Need a Phone At Your Desk? · · Score: 1

It was quite a shock the first time I tried to call in sick from home, and was informed that I couldn't, as my boss didn't have a phone. (Fun, since calling in sick was what HR told us to do - we were -actually- supposed to email in sick.) Other than that, no, I certainly wouldn't ever have any need for a work phone. If I need to talk to anyone at work, I do it in person or over IM, if I need to talk to anyone at work remotely, I do it in skype or over IM, and if I need to talk to anyone not work related while I'm at work, I wouldn't use a work phone anyway even if I had one, I'd use my cell. (And feel guilty - why am I not working?)

Obviously that only applies to dev. Sales people, or other managerial type roles that actually talk to customers, would presumably want customers to also be able to call them. Development doesn't really talk directly to customers.
