  1. Oh man on DC Vs. Marvel Vs. Capcom Considered? · · Score: 4, Interesting

I would buy this in a second (being the consumer whore that I am). These games are still fun even if they are rehashes of the same thing over and over and over again - I usually don't even mind that pretty much anybody with quarters can beat me without looking at the screen. Throw in a bunch of DC characters and some slightly less pixelated graphics and I'll be happy.

Sorry if I'm missing it, but is this a 2D topdown Gamecube game or a GBA game that relies heavily on the Gamecube? Multiplayer only or is there also a solo quest? I was expecting to see a GBA original Zelda title...

Seems like it's going to be a good year to own a GBA. Super Mario 3? Final Fantasy Tactics? New Metroid (I assume they'll make some sort of follow up to Fusion)? Advance Wars 2? GBA Sims (hmmmm...)? There's some good stuff coming down the pipe.

What, you mean SuSE doesn't just roll off your tongue (Soo-see? Ess-you-ess-ee? Suzy?)?

Gentoo's claim to fame is that it's source based, like LFS, but it's done in a way where it's really easy to maintain and install. It doesn't hurt they have a very friendly community to back them up. The big downsides include (but are not limited to) long compile times to install packages and a quasi-steep learning curve for some of the install/maintenance stuff that's been taken care of automagically by other distros as of recent (but really, it just requires reading directions). I use it at home and it suits me just fine, but as with all things arbitrary, it's not for everyone. Installing it is a good way to kill a couple days if you have the time, give it a shot if you get the urge.

  7. Will it dissuade modders? on Microsoft Set To Debut Xbox Live Upgrade · · Score: 3, Insightful

One of the big selling points for having a modchip (for me at least) is the ability to run the Xbox multimedia apps. Is this Microsoft's answer? A sort of "you can have your music and your video *and* not be banned from Xbox Live" thing? Or is this just a jumping on the do-everything bandwagon (a la Tivo's Home Media)? I'm getting kind of tired of having so many separate things doing so many different things, I'm ready for a little consolidation.. but only if it does each thing reasonably well.

And when will the first of the original Xbox Live subscriptions start expiring anyways?

I have both a Tivo and a homebrew, and unless you have real serious moral obligations to purchasing something from a company instead of building your own, consider getting a Tivo.

Homebrew: All parts (sff case, mb, memory, cpu, tv card, large hdd, etc. using MythTV) = ~$650
+: Yours to do with whatever you please, using actively maintained popular open free software, easily hardware upgradable, fun to play around with, much more software functionality (MythMusic, emulator front end, weather modules, etc.)
-: Hardware failure is your problem, TV software not quite up to par, more expensive, not quite as slick looking (without looking real hard for a decent case), maintainers can stop working whenever they get the urge, good luck getting digital/satellite TV working well with a cheapo TV card

Tivo + Lifetime subscription = ~$600 (add a larger hdd for more money)
+: Company paying people to maintain software and accurate listings, nice to look at, full featured and completely functional, hacker friendly, warranty makes getting a replacement unit easier, software head and shoulders above competition (IMHO YMMV blah blah - I'm sure other posts outline such functionality), it's a device that doesn't care if the power gets yanked on it, is built to support all sorts of television (digital cable, satellite, coax, whatever)
-: Warranty voided if you open it up, no control over software or updates, company controls any and all software, if Tivo goes out of business listings and software are at their mercy (although there's rumors of a Plan B if that should happen), only does the TV thing (unless you feel like paying for the lackluster Home Media option).

    Simply put:
Like tinkering? Have a lot of time and money to burn? Roll your own. Otherwise, there's an excellent effortless pvr already available for the same cost. Worst case scenario, buy a Tivo and keep the receipt (choose monthly sub instead of lifetime). Give it a test run. Don't like it? Return it and make a better one.

The real question is: Has anyone started trying to hack together drivers for the Tivo hardware so you can use their box but your own software?

Since there's all of these contests and interest in competitive gaming, is there some method of showing these matches to outside viewers over the internet? For instance, is it possible to logon to www.1337kewlut2k3deathmatch.com or run a copy of a game and watch a match in progress via some sort of overhead camerabot? I wouldn't mind being able to "sit in the stands" to watch a match or two once in a while, but I imagine there must be a fair amount of techinical limitations somewhere.

I don't know if the policy has changed, but we were required to say something like, "I'll be honest with you since I don't get commission from these sales."

I have to disagree. The original GBA was like an overgrown SNES controller, so while it was a comfortable form, it always felt like my fingers were stretching just a little bit longer than they should, especially with the top buttons (yes, I know they were right there, but I always felt like I had to curve my fingertips around them). The SP fits in my hands perfectly and the top buttons feel good, but it's a pretty distinct size. If you have larger than normal hands it'll probably feel a little unnatural. The big positives for the new design (in my opinion - as with all other devices, your mileage may vary) are:

    Sexy design. It looks slick.

Folds up to a size slightly larger than a pack of cigarettes. I can actually fit it in my pocket without walking funny.

Screen position can be adjusted so you can hold the unit flat but have the screen point at your face.

All that other stuff about the lit screen and rechargable battery pack is good too.

With one of the many GBA trade in opportunities at used game places, it can be had for $60. Wait until after E3 and I'll bet that'll go down at least $10.

So, anyways, let me ask some questions. Is the big deal that Sci-Fi bitched out on the final season that it promised or that the fans just want the show to go on forever? Or just the fact that the series ended with a cliffhanger and you need resolution? Moreover, what makes the Farscape fans so persistent and loud about what they want?
