  1. X360 base price is $299 not $500 on Fallout From the November Console Wars · · Score: 2, Informative

The base X360 is $299. With game, that's $350. Use the Overstock 12% off coupon and it's ~$308 for the base console plus one game. That's a big difference from your $500 claim (even without the coupon). Don't confuse the 360 price with the PS3 price.

  2. MS rumored to be making $75 per console sold on Game Consoles Sell Over 3.2 Million Units in November · · Score: 1

You must not follow the news. http://www.isuppli.com/news/default.asp?id=6919 I suspect MS isn't getting the whole $75, they are probably taking $50 and leaving retailers with $25 per unit, so that they have more incentive to push 360 sales.

  3. 10 mil AFTER ONE YEAR on Microsoft Sticks to 10M Xbox Projection · · Score: 1

You're comparing the 10 mil number to the lifetime shipped of the other consoles while the 360 has only been out 1 year. If you look at PS2 which has the most total shipped (note it doesn't say sold), then look at where the data came from, the PS2 only sold 10 mil after its first year.

  5. What OS? Looks like Linux on U.S. Commerce Department Hacked Again · · Score: -1, Troll

I see several posters immediately thinking that they were running Windows. Well, according to Netcraft, at least their website is using Linux. That doesn't mean the hacked server wasn't using Windows, but there's also a good chance it was running Linux. I think this goes to show that it doesn't matter what OS you use if you don't secure it.

  6. Copy rights on Answers From Lawyers Who Defend Against RIAA Suits · · Score: 1

IANAL, but from what I've read here and in the EFF page, making copies is NOT granted as Fair Use by Copyright Law. However, the RIAA does say you can legally make copies and put it on your IPod as a right granted by the copyright owner, but doesn't extend to all copyrights.

  10. Not apples to apples on The Wii Takes NYC · · Score: 1

You're making some assumptions here: 1. people want wifi, I'm sure there are a percentage of people who don't already have wifi, so they'd have to buy a wifi router, you didn't figure that into your costs 2. people want the pack-in game, sure it's a "free" game, but if it really was $25, how many people would actually buy it? I would have preferred to get $25 credit toward downloading games Given that the Wii is really a Gamecube++ and the fact that I don't feel like I got my money's worth from my current Gamecube, I'll probably pass on the Wii until it gets to the $150 range and games are $25. However, I'm also waiting on a price drop on the X360 as well. I'm not even considering a PS3 at this point.

  11. VC1 has been an open standard since 4/06 on Blu-ray vs. HD DVD Round Two · · Score: 4, Insightful
You might want to do a little more research. VC-1 has been standardized by the SMPTE (http://www.smpte.org/news/press_releases/003_06.c fm).

"The SMPTE VC-1 standard went through a very rigorous and formal open due process procedure involving committee members from all segments of the Media, Entertainment and Computer industries" says Mike Dolan of Television Broadcast Technology (TBT), who chaired the main ad hoc committee. "This process has resulted in a clear, comprehensive and completely open standard for development of compressed video bitstreams," Dolan adds.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dumping_(pricing_poli cy) It's only illegal if they are selling for a substantially lower price in foreign markets compared to domestic markets. So in Japan, if they sold it for $2000 (US), then it would be dumping. Otherwise, all free products would be illegal.

The article clearly refers to OEM written drivers, not MS written drivers. So if you install Vista and don't install any additional drivers, then you can definately expect that to work. If you now install the latest Creative and ATI drivers. You can submit crash reports to MS if those drivers fail. As for the old crash system. OEMs still get crash reports, but there was no incentive for them to fix bad drivers. Now, if they don't fix their drivers, MS will revoke their WHQL status and cannot advertise that they are compliant with Vista. I don't know enough about the system to say whether they have checks in place to prevent abuse.

The fact that they've had significant growth and continue to have significant growth is probably the factor.
