It's true that people id'd as gold farmers will get worse treatment, but not true that people with poor language skills are treated like this. Honestly, have you seen the chat in any MMO lately? I call bullshit.

  17. Costs of entry getting higher on On The Over-Saturation Of MMO Games · · Score: 4, Insightful

One real problem is that as newer MMO's come out, the cost of entry is getting very high. Not in dollars, but time.

My cousin used to be a pretty fanatical Everquest player. As new expansion packs would come out, he'd have to spend hundreds of hours leveling his character up just so he'd be strong enough to try out the Planes of Power, or whatever the new hotness was. All his friends played, and played a lot too, so if he wants to quest with them he has to be fairly close in levels or he'll be pasted in any combat.

So with any new MMO people have to start over. They have a new character, no skills, and lose all their previous investment of time. If their friends don't switch, then it's another reason not to embrace a new MMO. Why go play if all your friends are still playing EQ?

The only MMO coming out that says they plan to address this is World of Warcraft. According to early interviews and alpha impressions at Gamespy, it seems that Blizzard wants you to be able to jump right in and have fun, regardless of what level you are. No more spending a few hundred hours killing giant rats and spiders so you can be tough enough to actually try doing something FUN.

So I don't know if MMO's will be inherently limited if they have proper design. The current crop of MMO's is getting very saturated however. Lowering the cost of entry (level treadmills, money, in-game loot) will certainly allow newer MMO's to compete however.

I have the Flash2Advance cart from http://www.success-hk.com. I got one with a usb link device to write to the cartridge. You put the cart in the GBA, link it to your pc from the usb linker, then start up the writing software. That software boots the GBA with a special program so it can write to the cart.

The best way to organize the files on the cart is with PogoShell. PogoShell lets you create a filesystem on the GBA, you can use it to read text files, play GBA roms and play NES roms. It has a built-in PocketNES emulator, so all you have to do is put the NES roms into a folder in the filesystem before you create a ROM image for burning. Works great!

  19. Fun but frustrating on GBA Gets Unofficial Sierra Adventure Game Emulator · · Score: 4, Insightful

I just gave this a whirl on my GBA SP (I have a flash cart & linker at home). While it was great to see Space Quest again, I forgot just how annoying some of these games can be. While you're presented with a visual of the layout of the room, you have to walk up to each item you want to mess around with, then find the right text combination to activate it, search it, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I loved these back in the day, and this is an amazing emulator, kudos to all. It's just reminding me of how nice it is these days to not have to find the exact phrasing of "turn on computer" to get the in game computer to work (in this case, "look screen").

The emulator does a great job though, and presents a popup menu that you can use to insert words into the game automatically, built from the vocabulary lists for that particular room.

Still, if you want to play these games again, this is a fantastic way to do it. I was able to fit 4 space quest games (space quest 1 & 2 and the two homebrew spacequest games) plus my NES roms all on a 128M cart.

  20. It's all about the games on Top Ten Handhelds That Didn't Make It? · · Score: 2, Insightful

    I'd have to disagree.

I live in Brooklyn and ride the subway to work every day. I'm 30, know a lot of other 25-30 year olds who all have gameboys. On any given day I'll see 5-10 GBA SP's on the subway, and usually only one of those will be in the hands of a kid.

At home I have a gamecube, decked-out pc, and what I find myself playing the most are my gameboy games. Wario Ware, Advance Wars 1 & 2, Golden Sun, Mario & Luigi... these are all just great games. Sure I can load stuff up on the tv, but I can play my gameboy in the subway, I can take it with me on lunch breaks, I can play it in any room in the house, take it on planes, trains, etc.

Gameboys are not just for kids. That's similar to how people erroneously state that all gamecubes are owned by kids. Plenty of adults play and enjoy gameboys. They have incredible, quality games on them. I can name more wonderful gameboy games I've played in the last year than I can for my console and for my pc. There's some serious creativity going on with that platform.

Granted I didn't have this same love of my gba before the SP. I had a number of games that were fun, but I had to play those in good lighting, or buy a separate light kit. Plus the unit was so large. My SP fits in my coat pockets, heck, even in my jean pockets if the pants are baggy enough. Great games and portability, it's a good thing. Can't wait to see how the PSP does.

  23. Not true... on Apple Forcing Panther Upgrade for Security Patch · · Score: 2, Informative
If you check out the article at news.com they mentioned:
On Tuesday, Apple released an advisory that indicate that the Mac OS X 10.3 upgrade--which adds an improved Finder menu, better synchronization of files and a tool to help users find a specific window on a crowded desktop--also includes more than a dozen "security enhancements."

However, Apple apparently doesn't intend to fix the flaws in previous versions of the software: Apple's Security Updates Web page doesn't list fixes for the flaws in Mac OS X 10.2 and earlier.
So the point is that there were a dozen security updates since 10.2, some of which were mentioned in the advisory, that are fixed in Panther but have no patches available in 10.2. Not that there isn't a security hole in 10.2, there is one. Just that they don't offer a patch for it. The only fix right now is to upgrade to Panther.

I honestly don't think that this will remain a problem, Apple has been pretty good about patching things as they come along, but the point of the article is that 10.2 IS vulnerable, with the only protection/patch being an upgrade to Panther.
  24. No Link Connector on Alternative GameCube GBA Adapter Launched · · Score: 2, Insightful
One big drawback to this is that it lacks a link connector to connect up multiple gameboys. So you can play a game on the cube, but you can't link up with any other cartridges.

Additionally, with titles like Four Swords and Pacman Vs. coming out soon, you'll not want to stray from the official Gameboy Player hardware.

I can see the appeal price-wise, but with $10 separating the two devices, I'd stick with the official Nintendo kit. The one place I'd consider going third party though is with the new wireless systems. Nintendo's won't be backwards compatible with older titles. It will be an all-new connection protocol.

Triton Labs, maker of the Afterburner, announced a wireless connector for the gameboy that would emulate the existing link protocol, so all gameboy games would be able to be used wirelessly. This I'd LOVE to see enabled. I'm pretty surprised that Nintendo didn't follow this path for the new wireless support, they have a good history with the gameboy of legacy support.
