  1. Can use any OS just no tech support on Telstra Considers 45,000-Seat Linux Deployment · · Score: 1

    From the System Reqs:

Connection to the internet (via Enternet PPPoE software supplied by Telstra, Windows XP PPPoE, Speed Touch Pro PPPoA, or MAC PPPoE)

this requirement only needs to be met in order to get telephone support for self installation, it doesn't explicitly say you can't use anything else.

Just out of interest, from the FAQ on internode.net.au (one of Telstra's competitors):

Internode prides itself on being highly supportive of the use of ADSL on any computer system that you have which runs TCP/IP.

We are pleased to support most flavours of Windows.

But we also strongly and explicitly support MacOS (OS-X and OS-9)

And we also support the use of Linux and FreeBSD to access the Internet using ADSL.

Cars (internal combustion engine) emit more nasty stuff than greenhouse gases - chemicals such as benzene, adversely affect human health.

In fact, the two most carcinogenic substances known are emitted from trucks. Diesel fumes are generally considered 25 times more carcinogenic than cigarette smoke - we worry about some passive smoking in a bar, but have trucks/buses/generators blasting diesel into the air *WTF*?

The comments of Dr. Paul Davies were even raised in the South Australian parliament - that more people die from exhaust emissions each year than speed and alcohol related road accidents!!!!!! Where is the TV advertising campaign "Drive a diesel engine - and you're a bloody idiot" !! :-)

In terms of health hydrocarbons suck - to me it makes more sense to emit some extra C02 in order to make electricity for cars. Other than it's affect on global warming, C02 is relatively clean - its not unhealthy to breate - certainly compared to car emissions.

Production of materials such as concrete produce obscene greenhouse gases, we could make a few less tons of that per year to compensate for the extra levels from electricity for cars :-)

  4. Why store the CC info anyway? on Keeping Private Customer Data...Private? · · Score: 1

I dont agree with the arguments for storing CC info. It's not necessary, why not use a bank for financial transactions? Someone commented they need to store the info so they can refund money if needed, banks can do this just as well.

If organisations like the FBI keep their sensitive data totally isolated from the internet, because thats the only way to ensure its safe, then getting Slashdot security advice for storing CC info on your system is seriously asking for trouble, in the order of million $ liabilities :(

The components that will "benefit" from becoming win-components, by becoming cheaper, are not the costly parts of the system.. $25 for a winmodem or $50 for a real one, this is nothing compared to the cost of the monitor, CPU etc. Its a 'false economy' - I would need a faster system to support all these components, just to save a few $ on some chips on the component cards. I have experience with a winmodem - poor CPU performance under heavy graphics/modem load, to the point where the machine reboots once every few hours as the CPU gets hot under these conditions.
