That may be the case in the US.
Here in Germany, people are either very quiet, or react all at the same time because of something happening in the movie. And a whole crowd laughing at the same time just makes it more enjoyable to me. (They all even stop laughing again when they want to hear the next line.)
The seats are usually big, comfortable and clean. Even the floor is pretty clean. The chairs are placed so that you can always see above even big people, and we don’t come with the car in the first place, because it’s in the city. Or there is a large parking space.

I must say, apart from the expensive popcorn and drinks, the cinema experience is pretty good here in Germany.

The best thing was, that with Avatar being a 3D movie, they did not even check my backpack for a camera. They did not check it at all. I went in there with a six-pack of Pepsi bottles, a tube of chips, a bag of M&Ms and some Nippon (popped rice with chocolate).
It also was THX, which guarantees fat bass and really makes the difference in sound.

The only thing missing, was IMAX. And maybe a good story. ^^ That would have been insane. :)

On the other hand, I have really good 5.1 sound and a projector at home. So I would not even really need it. But I still think it’s worth it to go to a cinema here.

Hmm... Maybe you are too young to know, but the list view was the default since forever, in all software. It’s why “ls“ is named “ls”.
Microsoft also had the list view in its file manager of Windows 3.1 and before.

Only with Windows 95 did the resolution even become high enough to allow it for file management. And only then did they merge the program groups (windows with icons inside) with the file manager (a tree of folders and a list of files) to create the Explorer (then they naturally added the web browser in there, as it’s just another space to browse).

It was hated by virtually everybody back then. As was the “new window for every folder‘ mode that became default.
I still have a script that fixes up all windows failures after installation. It’s called AntiDAU (DAU = dümmster anzunehmender user = dumbest assumable user), similar to (XP)AntiSpy nowadays.

I fear that I have to port that script to Gnome and KDE too. Which should tell you a lot about the sad state that they both are headed for (or actually, always were in a bit).

Of course. They always copy the worst of all ideas Microsoft, and on top of it, do it way too late too. To make sure that really everybody already knows and hates that from MS, and disables it as the first action of installing a Gnome... uuum I mean Windows desktop. ;)

Don’t mod me troll here, as I am a big friend of Linux. I’ve just got a huge problem with the fact, that pretty much all “mainstream“ Linux desktop environments are always imitating, and never innovating. Always with the (invalid) excuse of wanting to make it easier to switch.
Exceptions prove the rule: The only glimpse of innovation came from KDE with their “semantic desktop” idea. But it came in one atomic package with a huge load of other “improvements” for the worse.

The thing is, that that point of view is not ever going to get them anywhere. They are their own worst enemies. It’s simple psychology: If you wanna lead, you gotta lead. Simple as that.
Only when both Gnome and KDE teams (and even the XFCE team) stop reacting... to the stupid part of their users, and especially to Microsoft or even Apple... only then will it ever become the year of Linux on the desktop.

I’ll explain: If you got something, that perfectly imitates something else... then what’s the point of switching in the first place? See... it’s not getting you anywhere, to imitate.

If you, on the other hand, got features, that nobody else has, or has even thought about...
I mean, from what I see, the Linux community got an insane amount of genius that is simply thrown away for the fear of not being loved by Windows users.
It’s like with women: If you want a girl, you don’t come to her all needy, trying everything just to be loved. That’s just gonna drive her away. You make yourself stand out. You draw her in, by being something special that she wants to be a part of. I mean, who wants someone who tries to suck up to himself? Nobody.

Guys, let’s make the best fuckin’ desktop environment on the planet!!
Of course we listen to the actual needs of the users. But not from that needy standpoint. Not to show them. We don’t need anyone’s approval.
Allow yourselves to revolutionize the way people think about desktop environments! If you got something that you think is really great, draw us in! Be the leading figure. Whoever told you that you can’t be the one that Steve Jobs and Bill Gates look up to for inspiration: Tell them to go fuck themselves for limiting you! It’s bullshit! You decide what you can do.

    And then you just do.
Because in the end, that’s what really will make users love you!

It also gotta be one of the most wasted roots to build a story upon.

Then again, as I said in another comment: What did you expect from a story written by a child, for himself and his dream world?
You can’t rewrite that to what the fans want, no matter how hard you try.
It should have been two separate trilogies for I-III: One, close to the original, made for children, with the same target group as Harry Potter but with sci-fi.
And another, completely new story, that would not even try to be close to the original stories I-III, but fit right into IV-VI and a grown-up, philosophical mindset. (Assuming it would have been well-written. Otherwise everything else wouldn’t matter anyway.)

It should have been a children’s movie, from a child, to children. It would have been nice and funny and fittingly childish. But tell that to a guy sitting in his basement for a decade (no offense, as I can sympathize), waiting for it to come out. ;)

Ok, let me hear your justification, why you think you are more valuable than someone else (e.g. a chimpanzee, or a raven, or a dolphin) and why you are the center of the universe.

Next thing I know, is you telling me about the “supremacy” of the “white man”.

I bet many animals are in many areas more intelligent, more valuable and more productive for our society. If only because they know the value of other individuals...

And yeah: I think animal tests should be replaced by human tests. Pay people. There is always a market price. Just offer enough.
If that means it becomes expensive, then so be it. (Actually, it isn’t, as the money will always be used to buy stuff, and so gets back to you next time someone buys something from you.)

Also, “guilty” is an outdated term. There is no such thing. Everything has a cause. And you can always call the causing person/thing/event the “real guilty one” instead. Back to the beginning of the universe!
    Cause and effect.
Also punishment does not make society better at all! That’s disproven for a looong time.
Punishment only “helps”, as long as you continue to punish. Just as pain killers only “help” as long as you take them, while continuing to run against the wall.
As soon as you stop, it will have the opposite effect, making things even worse. Someone is taking revenge. Someone is beating his kids because of unprocessed problems caused by the punishment. It’s a vicious circle.

A proper solution is, to first really understand the other side. The reasoning, the causes, how that person came to doing it. You always find things like: He thought and still thinks, it was the right thing to do. Or he felt he was forced and there was no other way out. Or he did not want to do it at all, but could not prevent it either. Etc.
People don’t do things that they think is wrong. Punishing them is never going to change that. Ever.

Second, if you can’t get the mind sets of you and the other one to agree enough, to be able to live in one social group, you separate him from your group. Or he separates his group from you. Same thing, because it’s all relative, as there is no absolute truth or right/wrong on this planet. It’s all just convention and motivation based on natural selection and reproduction.

I think the best model ever, is to take a large area, and let them found a self-governed society there. The murderers, the rapists, the criminals. Most likely they need to split into different groups too. But in the end, they have to work together, and regain the essence of what is human, to survive. You don’t even have to create any embargo. People will already hate them enough.
But if they regain respect, by building a working society, then they are welcome to contact us again. (That’s called forgiving someone.)
I’d prefer that to a prison any day. It would be hard. But you would feel alive. (Well, until you lose natural selection against another murderer. ^^)
