Besides, if the kids want the games they will get them whether there is a law slowing them down or not. Kids drink alcohol before they are 21, they smoke before they are 18 and get porn before they are 18 too.

You realize, of course, that you can use the same argument to justify anything, from murder to midget-goat-bestiality. Hell, there's always someone who breaks the law, let's toss away all the laws!

Second, what about the mantra that if you don't want people to record things, then don't send it on the radio spectrum? Cable companies can ask you to sign terms of agreements for viewing their broadcasts. They could put broadcast flags in their transmissions if they so choose --and there isn't much that anyone can do about it except not subscribe.

I don't think you get it. Yes, they can send all the flags they want on cable TV... but it won't do them any good, because your TV/VCR/Tivo is not listening to them. This legislation would force all manufacturers of electronics to include "flag listening and complying) to YOUR electronics.

I'm a reporter on a Third World country, so I've actually seen a lot of poor people first hand. And I think this is a great idea, because what they lack the most is education.

Mind you, I'm not talking about Math or History. I'm talking about the kind of education that drives you to improve your life. Many, many poor people are trapped in a sick paradigm --work a crappy, crappy job, get enough money for basic food and alcohol, repeat as needed. By showing the children that there is more to life, and giving them something to aim for, you can break the cycle for the next generation.

Until I see how something like this can actually reduce the cost of living for these folks, I don't see that it's worth putting my support behind.

I hope Negroponte, the MIT, AMD and the rest of the gang will still keep at it, anyway.
