I agree with your peeve. However, reporters are not policemen. Cops have to look for evidence. We simply report what other people say or do ("say", being the appropiate word in these stories). The fact that SCO makes these claims IS news, whether we like it or not (I don't). If no one had reported it, you wouldn't know about it. How is that better?
Sadly, that doesn't sell newspapers or advertising space.
You'd be surprised how little this whole SCO thing sells to the mainstream public. Most readers are not computer experts and have no idea who Bruce Perens or what SCO is.
I want to see an article from a non-open source advocate called "SCO is Smoking Crack".
That's the problem. You don't want a balanced story. You want a rabid rant supporting your view. I'm a journalist and an open source advocate. And I hate SCO as much as the next slashdotter. But, at the same time, if I were to write a story about this affair I'd also have to listen to SCOs allegations and try to represent them to the best of my ability. Journalists shouldn't make moral judgements. We should just report the facts and let you make the judgements.
I wasn't around at the time, but from what I read, Adolf Hitler's government certainly wasn't "instable"... until the United States kicked his ass.
A nit pick. The Allies kicked his ass. You know, all those Brits, Aussies, Russians and other people that also fought and died. Plus, it was the Russians that took Berlin.
Wow, I mistype a "j" for a "g", and suddenly I'm a fucktard? At least the Anonymous Coward above actually made a joke about it. And a funny one at that. Outwitted by an AC. Boy, should your face be red...
I don't know about you all, but I don't hear a geek. I hear a politician telling geeks what they want to hear. That's not a slam, just an opinion. On the other hand, Georgy would sure be a lot easier on the eyes than Arnold or Bustamante. However, it's a moot point. Running as the "geek" candidate was silly anyway, like running as the "paraplejics" candidate, or the "millionaires" candidate. In a general election, any candidate aiming for a minority is going to lose.
Hi, I hope you still see this reply. I'm extremely interested in subtitling some anime titles. Most of what I've got is legit, plus some fansubs, but since I live in Mexico, I want to translate them to Spanish for the benefit of my wife and familiy. If you have experience doing it, I'd appreciate some pointers as to what programas to use and what is the procedure. Thanks a lot.
As we are apparently mostly in agreement, I just feel I need to make a little comment here...
:S
I actually feel strongly that reporters have far more effective power and control over our society than any number of police would
I think you need to s/reporters/media owners.
Reporters are the programmers of the media world. We have plenty of PHBs too...

Fifty years from now... ?
Sixty years from now, Profit!
OK, who are you guys and what's with the tar and feathers?

If people don't like that, they're more than welcome to fork.
My brain keeps adding a "themselves" to that sentence...
Hopefully, women don't have dangly bits...

I think his server crashed and burned...

I think you mean "infringe that efficiently".
An boy, don't we all...
"Nah. A result is a result no matter what methods were used to produce it. No cheating."
I spy an Nvidia engineer!
Or a Microsoft executive?
You have friends, and you read Slashdot? I am sorry, I thought that was against the rules.
Nope, you're confused. The rule is against having friends and posting on Slashdot.
He still broke it, tough.
and a mind to be treasured
You mean, put him in a box and bury him in a deserted island?
I'd rather "treasure" Darl or Bill...
For example. "Bill Gates noted closed source zealot and pro-monopolist met with shareholders today."
Hmm, doesn't seem right does it?
Actually, it does sound quite right. Bad example.
Especially since the majority of the hecklers I've seen here on Slashdot have never contributed a line of open-source code in their lives.
I take it that you and a hell of a lot of slashdotters have contributed code to Windows?
Or is this the fabled Slashdot hypocrisy?
Boy, and will you be freaked out if one does....
Damn, Slashdot needs a "+1 Paranoid" mod
Now, what does it say about you that you consider "paraniod" a good mod?
Really. There are weirdos, and then there are slashdotters.
So, they must acquit, right?
They'll find out that McBride had the evil bit turned on.
Oh well. I guess I just wanted to say hello. =p
You sure you didn't mean "say goodbye"?
>:)
If SCO keeps going the way they're going, they're gonna end up in "It's Funny. Laugh".
That does not make sense.
Heh... the noob even mispelled "luser"...
