  1. Re:Advancements in FUD everywhere on Linux and Windows Security Neck and Neck · · Score: 2, Insightful

Like most "debates", those who best frame the discussion for their own purposes will "seem" to be winning.

Realisticly, it's not just the number of vulnerablities that an operating system or program has, but also how the creator deals with them. There will always be bugs, and we should thus judge software creators not only by how few bugs they have, but also by how quickly they respond to bugs.

  4. Back Channel Marketing maybe? on P2P and TV · · Score: 2, Interesting

So, someone in the TV industry clues in to what Microsoft and a few others have know for a long time...Windows and other programs like Word, Autocad, etc are as popular as they are now not by quality, but by the fact that they are freely copied and thus everyone, even poor people learn them, and if they ever are in a situation where they can buy it, they do. Piracy thus creates a vast pre-made audience for a product, be it software, music, books or now TV shows. For all we really know, this release of the show could actually be a test of back-channel marketing. To sell a show, you need to know how popular it is, and only then can you sell commercials for it.

In today's 500+ channel universe, getting "eyeballs" can be hard for a new show on TV...but on the Internet, it's a good chance if you get even a small part of one percent, you will get more viewers than the average new show on network TV. As various groups track P2P transfers, you can get a more accurage accounting of viewership than you can with a random sampling of TV viewers such as Neilson does.

All in all, P2P distribution seems to be a more economical way to judge the possible success of a new show.

As well, the HR people are Clueless!

This past weekend, I was at a Pizza Pizza with der Mouse (yes, that der Mouse), when we were complaining about the cluelessness of HR people about computers and related skills, when a person beside us introduced herself as an HR person with the Canadian Federal Government, and totally agreed with us. Her degree was in Biology and Genetics, but because of the cluelessness of the HR people, she couldn't find a job, although lots were advertised. So, she figured she would "fix it from within", and became an HR person, and found out the hell that HR is.

Appearlently, very, very few HR people last more than 5 years, and it's more like a 2-3 year career for most. The turnover rate is increadable. Companies and The Government need people with technical skills, and put increadable pressure on the HR people, expecting them to deliver really fast. And this pressure burns people out very quickly. So at best, people can learn the buzzwords, and search for them. And this is also a "cover your ass" move, as if you send someone to a company that they don't like, and they gripe to yoru boss about it, you loose your job.

So, ultimately, it's an artificial shortage, causd by companies who don't get good HR people, or spend the time to train them properly...and these people are then clueless about the field they are hiring for, and thus cannot find the people their organization needs.

I know a half dozen types of Unix, but I don't know "X" Unx. Unless I lie and say I know "X" Unix, they won't even look at my resume! And knowing at least half a dozen flavours of Unix, I can probably pick up any reasonable type of Unix in a few weeks.

Or, if you know, say Java, C, Pascal and a few otehr langauges...and they are looking for C++, chances are, you can pick it up in a few weeks.

Companies are looking for too many "exact" matches since they have had the cream of the crop from the Dot-Busts period. Now that those who couldn't get jobs have moved on to something else, they are still too picky in recruiting...so although there is a surplus of techies, they can't find enough people to hire with the "exact" skill set they want. And nowadays, we are moving to snazzy graphics cards with gobs of memory and processing power, so we don't need as much specialized 3d processing on the CPU.

I am guessing that the Centrino has more in common with the P3, as I haven't had time to dig into the Centrino...but those ratios of clock speeds generating similar results do look familar...
