Cool news, especially with Dave Haynie's name tacked on as CTO.
But, more importantly, will that most advanced piece of software ever written (nay, conceived in one maniac's crazed mind) -- BLAZEMONGER -- work in this "full binary compatibility across CPU architecture"?
Meanwhile, conspiracy experts are poring over the pictures, and videos of the JFK assassination for any clues to the whereabouts of the Iceman murder. Theorists claim that the "magic arrow" could have killed both the Iceman and JFK from evidence found in the Zapfruder movie (frames 112, 133, and 149). The Iceman is claimed by some to be a Cuban refugee who had contacted Oswald earlier that year.
Does anyone have any pointers toward a sendmail filter to keep the Sircam virus from spreading? I've installed a recipe in my.procmailrc for my own account, but it would be nice if I could screen the virus out for the other users on my system...
Sigh. Although they say that any news on a product is good marketing, don't actions like this just make the Linux community seem like a bunch of script kiddies who can't control their urge to do "destructive" stuff in order to spread the word about Linux? Is this a good move in this movement to try to establish Linux in such markets as the business world?
That was actually Doonesbury where Boopsie gets a VR headset from the Home Shopping Network. She also buys BD a puppy a little while afterwards with it.
It doesn't matter what we want. They're not going to listen. Take a look at some of the sites that have been blocked by CYBERsitterCyber Patrol. They willingly censor certain sites that do not match their own political criteria -- not ours.
None of these kinds of censoreware products will replace good parenting...
Just a tip for people who frequently travel. If you buy a ticket and you find that the price goes down some time subsequent to that, give the airline a call to get a voucher for the difference. I've done this numerous times with United and Delta and have had no problems in getting the full difference given to me as a voucher that I can use on a future flight...
I thought the Telephone Consumer Protection Act prohibited pre-recorded advertising messages unless the sender obtained the express permission or consent of the party...
There is nothing as satisfying in any of the modern day video games as the loud "ka-klaccckkk" sound that a pinball machine gives you when you win a free game. It's so much more visceral than the eye-candy video games of today.
The great thing about a pinball machine is that you can play a game for ten minutes on one quarter. Can you say that about any video arcade game?
The words "Ride the Cyclone!" and "Hey you, with the face!" will forever stay in my mind. If I had the space in my apartment, I would go out and get a Cyclone pinball machine today.
They forgot the social engineering aspect of "hacking."
"Hi, I'm calling from the security division of and am trying to run a on our network. It looks like my records here doesn't have your machine name and password. Do you think you could provide it to me?"
Also, even if people choose "good" passwords, how many of them write it down on a Post-it note and put it into their drawer? How many of them use that same password on several different machines?

Sim Plague

So, how is having a Sim die from catching a disease from a guinea pig any different than a Sim dying from having the kitchen stove catch on fire? About the only difference is that the guinea pig disease is a lot more mysterious, but it's still avoidable once you figure out how to prevent it...
In any case, I think the article itself was drug induced or something. What's up with it bringing up Internet worms in the context of a "virus" that's part of a game? Sheesh. Next, these journalists are going to start harping on the "Censorware" code that's in the game when it mosaics out the characters when they're naked or going to the bathroom... Sigh.
It takes some time for me to realize that Star Blazers is the anime I loved, Uchu Senkan Yamato, when I was 11 years old. It was in year 1975, and the show was the reason why I wake up before 11 on Sunday morinings. (My local station showed it on Sunday mornings.) I think that was the show that made ``anime'' mainstream in Japan.
I was just thinking the same thing about "Uchuu Senkan Yamato." I was born in Japan and came over here in 1976, so the animated series (as well as the original manga books) remain in my mind. I can still hear the blaring, "UCHUU SENKAN, YA-- MA-- TOH!" part of the song. Flashbacks...
I may have to check out the "Americanized" version on the web now...
My once great ISP, Interlog, wrote a procmail script for filtering email at the shell level. It's beautiful! It came pre-configured for a certain number of domains or addresses, and if you got another SPAM through your account, all you had to do was go into the shell and edit the.spamrc file.
I use Catherine Hampton's Spam Bouncer which is an excellent procmail script that is constantly updated. Very nice.
If it really is in the artists interests to offer their music under some kind of shareware / demoware scheme, they will do this. However, it's certainly not for you to decide what is and what isn't good for the artist. Sharing is fine, but sharing should be voluntary.
Many artists do want to put out some of their songs in MP3 format and such but are unable to do so due to their contracts that they signed years ago with their record company...
I am not exactly sure about my feelings when I read this article. For sure I am not glad that the new company has decided not to support Slackware.

Patrick Volkerding has moved out here from Minnesota and is now managing Slackware development on a day-to-day basis. We will be releasing Slackware 7.1 by summer.
I remember when Patrick was reluctant to move from Minnesota to California, so I guess Bob talked him into coming out for a reason. And having known Bob and Patrick for several years, I seriously doubt it's to cut him off unsupported. From my experience, Walnut Creek CDROM has been very supportive of Slackware Linux from the get-go.
I've never really seen a comparative "study" between BSDi and FreeBSD (although that would be really interesting). I will say, however, that the FreeBSD configuration on ftp.cdrom.com isn't quite an "out-of-the-box" configuration. David Greenman has had to tweak the heck out of that box, even down to writing his own ftp daemon. It was a happy day when we found out that we had broken the "one terabyte downloaded in one day" milestone several years back...

Does this mean we're going to break up the RIAA while we're at it?
Actually, I'd go get a daemon outfit, but that's just my own preference.
Why, I'd build a miniature scale replica of the Microsoft headquarters. Then I'd don my Godzilla outfit and have a field day.
