    and yes it really REALLY sucked working there. The number one thing i couldnt figure out was why they would try to sell all that movie merchandising crap but it was a loss every damn month when they would put it at 99 cents clearance just to get rid of it piling up. also i hated how they would have us specifically mislead the customers for their rewards cards and return times.

    When I was living in southern california tons of people both my girlfriend and i knew were using netflix. Now that we've moved to miami there are alot less people here who use it. Of course I saw more netflix commercials in LA than i do here.

    out in florida looking for a tech job in the process of relocating from the financial hell hole that is los angeles I was staying at a hostel by the everglades using their wireless internet access through their cable modem and using skype to talk to my girlfriend back home in LA while we went over pictures i uploaded to my website that i had taken of potential apartments we were looking at. it was really cool and worked really well. i even set up a three way call with my parents and my girlfriend (both in LA) but it choked on that either because someone was leeching files or my parents NAV was downloading updates. the quality was far FAR better than anything id ever experienced on a phone though.

    Why did AIM do better than ICQ? It was simpler and easy to use. All the instant messaging clients try to be like general stores and do everything. its like how many single use devices are better than all-in-one printers. you tend to cut corners or the quality isnt as good when you try to spread yourself too thin.

    Tell me ONE THING we can innovate from an information standpoint that cannot be copied overseas and mass produced dirt cheap.

    This situation pretty much leaves us with our only option jacking up the income rates of people who have to be onsite for something and swapping money between each other to make the economy run.

    isn't our lack of technology, its our political system. We have the technology to do pretty much anything you can imagine one way or another its just people, society, politics, business practices which hold it all back.

    Theres nothing stopping the flying car except us.

    Its not that it can't be built, its that we won't let it happen.

    When theres an incredibly important deadline look how fast work gets done? Apollo 13? sequencing the SARS virus in a month? imagine if it was for certain an asteroid was going to kill us all.

    We are not a very self-motivated species. We rely on the whims of visionary inventors to create new stuff and the will of the business and government leaders to allow that reality to come forth.

    This is why war causes such radical advances in technology. It has the will of the government and money is dumped on the visionary inventors to do what they do best.

    My girlfriend and I are in the process of moving to Florida from Los Angeles. I just got a job here in Miami. We and many of our friends are leaving because the costs are so prohibitive that a young couple just cant start a life together because of the costs of everything. It makes our parents sad we're leaving and will be on the otherside of the country but they know how much it will benefit us.

    Just last night my dad was telling me how he spent 3 hours driving home last night from the usual traffic + the rain. I'm currently commuting an hour in florida which most people think im crazy for doing so but its the most pleasant hour ive ever commuted.

    after all the crap they've put me through. im putting my money where my mouth is and already in the process of moving to florida.

    my girlfriend's friends and my friends are doing the same. get the hell out of that state and let it collapse into another dimension like that house at the end of poltergeist.

    california is a hell hole and not even the best leadership in the history of the world will be able to turn around the damage in a generation.

    before i got my new job out here (in florida) i was talking with numerous coworkers who were commuting 2 hours ONE DIRECTION DAILY. the sprawl is too great to use mass transit. short of invention teleportation suddenly the commute times are only going to get longer.

    and yes you too can get an affordable house in SOUTH CENTRAL for the low low price of $320,000 gunshot wounds come free!

    really how much of your life do you want to piss away in traffic?

    come join the mass exodus of young people out of california! california --- the new retirement community. where baby boomers go to die because they're already there and noone else can afford to move in!

    I have become so jaded by exactly the sort of stuff you meantion. I have been in the industry since I was 15. I am presently 26. Being dicked around by employers has taken me to the point that I literally hate IT now. I am relocating across the country to find work in early january only to get a job long enough where I can transition to a new career or my own business. California is CRAP.

    If you watched or know the story of Tucker you'd see that you cannot challenge a market with powerful players without being squashed. Theres only one way around this and that is to go overseas and establish the technology in another country under the protective wing of the government and then introduce it as an import everywhere around the globe.

    Tucker was unable to win against the big three auto makers, nor was Delorean.

    Mark my words, the only way we will ever see a flying car or radically advanced automobiles or cheap diamonds is if another government does it first.

    If you dont want the powerful companies that control the US to stifle what you're doing take your innovation overseas and develop it there. That is the only way you can become a real player.

    I believe that one of the most likely reasons that the government is such a tightass when it comes to space is because it's the ultimate high ground.

    It takes very little to launch a rock off the moon and drop it on earth causing an extinction event.

    I believe it even more now that they're trying to use legislation to kill off private space tourism.

    Our government is increasingly power hungry and they'll never let something like that leave their grasp. It'll take revolution first.

    I did save a few grand and when i saw the axe falling i went to costco and spent a few hundred on top ramen and various canned goods and supplies, some of which I am still using up. The problem is though, the economy continues to get worse and I spent all that saved money. I am now pulling money out of the mutual funds given to me by my grandparents in a last ditch effort to move with my girlfriend to florida or another part of the country with IT jobs. California is dead in my opinion.

    my three friends in various parts of the medical profession and my girlfriend with the degree she cant use due to outsourcing have shown me educational loans are not worth it. all of them are finding it impossible to find work. two of my medical friends are burdening their parents by going on to grad school because they realize how impossible it is to find work and the third friend is working at an asian koi pond place cleaning koi pools. my girlfriend with her four year tv and film degree is doing telephone customer service.

    Mortgage is out of the question, the realestate rates here are ridiculous (Another reason im going to move to florida if the hurricanes stop beating the $hit out of it)

    I'm very afraid it will screw up my credit rating so i'm hanging on by a thread to my finances. My goal is to move with my girlfriend, get married and raise a family in a house. If my credit gets screwed up that might not happen for another decade.
