I would imagine that more CD's will sell this way than anyone would think.

  5. Re:I feel bad for Microsoft on MS Must Ship Java With Windows Within 120 Days · · Score: 2, Informative

What had happened was Microsoft licensed Java from Sun to include in Windows. However, Microsoft violated the contract by adding in new extensions and other features to the Java VM. Now Sun got all pissed off about that and sued MS and broke their contract saying that Microsoft was frozen at whatever version of java they last modified. Now, along with that, Microsoft dominating the OS market has everyone stuck at Java VM version 1.2 (or whatever) and people dont need to download a newer Java version from Sun.

So, what does Sun do now?? They sue MS again and order that Microsoft can no longer distribute a Java VM with Windows (XP). But Microsoft has the whole .NET and C# deal, which is a massive compeitor to Java.

So, what does Sun do this time? They sue MS yet again and order that Microsoft MUST INCLUDE the most recent version of Sun Java with Windows.

    Will Sun ever learn ?

Accountant: but Mr CEO person, our research shows that only 200,000 people use Open Source software that would have a use for our super-deluxe hardware. at the same time, 4.5 million Windows users have a potential need for our super-deluxe hardware. in addition to that, the cost of creating and maintaining and Open Source driver would cost us an extra 15% on the development of super-deluxe hardware. If we dont have OpenSource compatible drivers, we can lower the cost of super-deluxe hardware by 15% and still make profit on it.

Mr CEO: Ok, that sounds even better.

  10. Re:Arrogance on Vanishing Features Of The 2.6 Kernel · · Score: 1

The driver layer break between Windows XP and Windows 98 was the total removal of the 16 bit hardware layer that the Windows 98 kernel ran on.
The Windows 98 kernel was a 32 bit GUI and interface wrapped around a 16 bit DOS based Kernel.

Windows 2000/XP are 100% 32 bit Kernels and Windows XP has NO DOS 16 bit driver compatibility.

These are (to some extent :) techinical advances, not changes because of some idealology that they might follow.

Dis-allowing binary only drivers is just absurd, Linux was about `Freedom and Choice, the freedom to run whatever software I want, how ever i want.'

Now the Kernel developers see fit to make Linux about `Freedom and Choice, the freedom to run whatever software i want, how ever i want, as long as everything on the system is 100% open source. '

I wonder when they will remove the ability to run non-open source applications in User-space land so that things like UT2003 wont work anymore (which it probably wouldnt because the nvidia drivers wont work).

    b) Any game that my system has played, plays in Windows XP (40.72's) at LEAST 40 fps faster EVEN with 4xFSAA and 4x Ansioscopic filtering

    c) it took nvidia a really long time to get decent (incredable at that) drivers for Linux. Who made nvidia chipset drivers for XFree86 3.x.x ? and even some of the X 4.x series where not nVidia produced drivers

nVidia drivers are NOT GPL'd because of copyrighted driver code that they have purchased from SGI to include in their drivers (there is a lot of information about this, even on /.)

  16. The reason is the advertisment of the prices on Retailers Swing DMCA To Stop "Black Friday" Sale Info · · Score: 1

not that they are `copyrighted' prices. the DMCA is probably being used (incorrectly) because it focuses on a website.

For anyone that has ever worked in a retail outlet and has met customers with incorrect , or even worse, 2-3 week old advertisements to merchandise knows that it usually leads to reducing the price to meet the incorrect ad.

If Bestbuy prints the Ad wrong, of course they will correct the issue as quickly as they can and honor those that have made notice of the incorrect price (well, most of the time).

However, what is Best Buy sopposed to do if some customer sees an advertisement for a 27" sony Vega TV on www.xyz.com for 349.99$?

They do not have to honor the advertised price because xyz.com is not a Best Buy affiliated advertiser. At the same time, they would also have to deal with angry customers complaining about this and that (beleive me, they WILL THINK of something)

I've worked at Circuit City for a while and seen all kind of people come in and say stuff like "my freinds daughters boyfreinds uncle said that you had a Sony TV advertised for 100$" which would be kind of correct, but it wasnt a Sony TV, it was some peice of crap Daewoo TV, when the correct item was shown the customer (along with the weeks Ad) , they would get all pissed saying "Well, i dont think this is right because i've known my freinds daughters boyfreinds uncle for 3 months and he wouldnt lie to me like that".

dont say it doesnt happen because it does.

again the issue isnt about `copyrighted prices', it is about unauthorised advertisement of goods.
