  2. Re:Slow News Day? on U.S. Says Canada Cares Too Much About Liberties · · Score: 1

I am both a proud Canadain and a person who cherishes his freedoms but I must say... I agree with you. Slashdot should get back on topic and keep the Geeks united no matter what their political views are. Although this was a great discussion in which I saw good arguments on both sides, I would rather that Slashdot editors did not publish their political views and start up all this commotion, I can go checkout CNN and CBC for These types of discussions. We are here to talk about Geek stuff, not Leftist Geek stuff. I would hate to see slashdot loose readers because of a strong political view.

  5. Let FTP serve it's purpose. on FTP: Better Than HTTP, Or Obsolete? · · Score: 1

If you plan on only sharing files that are listed on your website you may as well go with HTTP. The Reason Being that you have less to take care of, managing and FTP Server Alongside of a HTTP Server is a Pain in the Ass:

*Two separate sets of permissions that need to be in sync
*Two Protocols that could possibly be blocked by your ISP (They don't like FTP much)
*Browser Integrated FTP clients suck and it's a pain in the ass to have to copy and paste addresses into another client for the user
*Usually Extra Licensing Costs if your using a M$ Platform
*Most net users have download managers that are based on HTTP and that can resume (less bandwidth for you).
*FTP clients are mysterious "hacker" type software to average Joe.

Go with HTTP, it makes life easier and shows that your and your clients/users time is worth more to you than a little extra overhead.

  6. You will still be called ! Blame Canada.. on U.S. National Do-Not-Call Registry On the Way? · · Score: 1

Most of the Companies that call you to sell you stuff are from Canada , making them all but immune to US Prosecution. They move location, change ownership and claim to close every 4-6 months making it impossible for the RCMP (Canadian FBI) to charge them. Montreal and Toronto are where most of the call centres are, if you recall being called by a lot of people with French accents, now you know why. The Government List will more likely end up being a call list for small telemarketing firms that don't want to buy lists. It will also probably be a great new scam; I can just imagine telemarkers pretending to call people on the list claiming to sell them annual membership fees for the "Do Not Call List". There will always be ways around silly legislation.

Alot of you are forgeting that browser integration was a good idea! It was the next logical step and I happen to love being able to type a web address just about anywhere in my OS and be able to goto a website. There is no more browser war because, to the average user, there is no such thing as a seperate browser. MS has deleted the idea of a non integrated browser from the common users brain 4 years ago with the release of win98. Let's face the facts here guys. The end result will be a MS vs. Linux war, not a IE vs. Mozilla war. Linux has been copying MS ideas since it's birth, Browser integration should be the next idea it copys.

Ripping through the earth at what angle makes a large difference. Imagine 2 stranglets hit NY NY at the same time. This tells me that the scietists just looked for any seismic activity that resembled the first (entry) hit. Seismic measurment tools are not all that precise, especially equipment 10 years ago (I had a 486 10 years ago just to give you an idea) and the fact that they are looking for the impact of a particle that is 1/10 of a hair in size. There "proof" relys on the fact that in the past ten years there were two seismic activitys on different parts of the planet that were similar to eachother. Not much proof if you ask me....

It is also possible that in the next 5 years, better hardware will exsist that will tripple the bandwidth on existing fiber. Lets also not forget that while the telco's are sitting on there thumbs, mobile phone providers are going to take over alot of the load that telco's once had thus reducing the load. The idea of the telco's doing a standstill for the next 5 years also sounds unrealistic. The hardware that they mention at a 20:1 on fiber could also drop drastically in price thus leaving plenty of money to drop more fiber.

  25. SmartCards are capable of tracking you on Hong Kong Gets Smart ID Cards · · Score: 1

I used to work for a fortune 500 and they had very tight security. ID cards with an embeded chip was mandatory at all times and you had to log in and out of the building. Me an some of my friends noticed that the readers could be magnified to read cards from a couple feet away and still give the green light. What this means is that theoretically, the government could place these readers in the entrances to the subway or to office/gov buildings and see who is comming in or out if your card is in your wallet!!! this also opens up a whole new line of corperate spying/marketing.. A store could simply place a few of these readers strategically in there narrow enterance and every time you entered, they would have all of your personal information and be able to track your shopping habits .etc.. The things they could do are endless!! this is the problem with smart cards as opposed to magnetic stripes.. smart cards do not require contact to be read.. a criminal just needs to walk by you to steal you data/credit info/identity!!
