  1. Explain this to a dummy, please. on BT's Converged Wi-Fi/Cell Phone · · Score: 1

I read the article, and I don't get it.

Bluephone calls use the GSM network. When they transfer a call to use the Bluetooth link, they just transfer the first few yards of that call.

So your phone is communicating with a Bluetooth base station in your house. How is the base station communicating with the world? The Slashdot blurb says, "It doesn't roam calls onto the Internet, or even onto the landline, where they would be cheaper." What does that leave?

Is the Bluetooth base station communicating with a GSM tower over the air the same way phones do? If so, what are you gaining? Aren't you using the same amount of GSM bandwidth as before, plus some Bluetooth bandwidth?

(Yeah, I know some city transit systems have put cell service in the tunnels, but mostly not.) If you need guaranteed cell reachability, you have to avoid those places.

The way the jamming will work is that some places will jam and some won't. Those who need silence will go to the places that do, and those who need cell service will go to the places that don't.

The whole network will be run through some kind of censorware, and a suspicious number of sites critical of the city government will be listed as "hate groups". Sure, you'll be able to get a site taken off the blacklist, but it'll involve spending whole days on the phone with City Hall.

The other alternative is that they could have some kind of registration system where you register with the city, prove you're 18, and get a username and password. This would render the system totally useless to visitors, like anyone in town for a convention. (Rendering moot any argument that the city network is useful for attracting business to the city.)

The worst thing is that none of these issues will probably be considered until after millions of taxpayer dollars have been thrown at the thing.

It's called a liberal arts education. Universities aren't giving out Certified Java Programmer certificates, they're giving out baccalaureate degrees. Most colleges want this degree to mean that the holder has a solid grounding in all of human knowledge. Certainly people can argue about what perspectives should be represented in this body of knowledge, but Python programming ranks somewhat low on the list. If the major is called Computer Science and not Computer Skills, nlogn and Hamilton cycles are going to take precedence over being able to hack some wicked C++.
