Sorry.. collecting from public sites is considered hearsay.. as anyone could take and manipulate an image before posting it. By taking the the computer the prosecutor was simply trying to verify that the pictures did come from the defendant.
Now the question is really.. on what grounds did the judge grant the warrant....
Why not have them get Ubuntu for $20 at Best Buy? The fact that you can buy it at a brick and mortar store increases it's apparent validity as an operating system, and it has open office and firefox right out of the box, so the functionality they're used to is still there.
Never, if the pc is more than 3-5 years old ubuntu probably won't run...xubuntu will but not ubuntu. Almost everyone I know that is supporting friends/family on older hardware is doing so on hardware that isn't supported by ubuntu
Textbook authors deserve to be paid. If you have a society where authors do not get paid, you basically wipe out the entire academic basis of learning in the USA, and with it, our country.
I don't think anyone is objecting to the principle of paying for text books.. what every one is objecting to is paying > $75 for textbook in which nothing new has been added save errata fixes and the font on the page numbers changed
And oh, by the way, the text book writer, if he/she has a good reputation, might, just might get $1 per book sold, while 75% of the remainder goes to the publisher and the rest to the local book store.
One does not, in general, earn a living by writing text and specialty books. The Tom Clancys, Danille Steeles, JK Rollins of the world don't get rich from the royalties on their books.. they get rich from the royalties on the movies made from their books.
That scary "lockdown" that you are alarming about is not what those "entertainment and broadcast lobbies" desire for the Internet. This is what they desire for their TV on the Internet, for crying out loud. This is a subtle yet important difference because contrary to what you are implying here the Internet as we know it is not going to change. So don't worry, you'll still be able to waste time on Slashdot all day long. That having been said, I personally consider the television itself to be an utter waste of time (or a "lockdown" if you will) but do I post messages on Slashdot about it? No. I just don't watch it. Viola. Problem solved. You should try it sometimes and you'll see that there is no need to scare people that they will be somehow "locked down" by having a choice to watch the TV on some additional medium. And when it comes to something special that you do want to watch, but can't be home...the drm keeps you from recording it because someone somewhere decided for you that you had to watch it live or not at all... say your favorite little watched event at the olympics that is being shown live at 3am..sorry, this is special because we paid big $$$$ to the IOC.. therefore we decide you need to watch it live..no time shifting allowed
What's the problem here? Is this a matter of principle or is there something to hide?
The problem is that it is plan and simple grab to take away our rights under the 4th amendment without any probably cause or do process.
Not to mention that it does NOTHING to improve the security of our borders.
And it is seemingly becoming the new standard by which TSA agents get laptops for friends and family members. Confiscate the laptop, telling the poor smuck that it will be returned shortly after the disk is cloned for professional examination. Voila, laptop never comes back.. lots of cases and complaints on file of this particular situation.
Consider this: If one has to pay property tax on intellectual property, one would also have to pay property tax on cars, bikes, books, furniture, and everything else one owns.
Depending on where you live you may already pay property taxes on said items. In some states.. the value of the property is determined to be a fraction of the value of the residence.. in other an appraiser comes by to look at everything you own....
That unfortunately is the reason most quoted for using e-mail in the first place. Most upper management (and middle management) view e-mail not as a communication tool, but as a way to CYA. The phrase "Send it to me in an e-mail." is uttered far to often not because they need reminding or somehow didn't hear you just tell them that, but because they want it in writing.
Which is probably the only reason Notes auto deletes messages after default period of 90 days. And fortunately most users are savy enough to go extend it:-)
Which is arguably the only thing Notes did right !:-)
For the most part what you are discussing are trade/technical schools. Things like Devry Technical Institute, ITT Tech which provide degrees, but which are not accredited in any manner, meaning if you do 2 years at ITT Tech, you get ZERO credit for it if you try to then go to University to obtain a 4 year degree.
Life in general is being dumbed down. When was the last time a clerk counted back the your change after a purchase? How many governmental forms are now available in some grotesquely large number of foreign languages? Or ask the sub-twenty crowd to write a correctly formatted paper without the aid of a M$ word template, 90% of them can't do it.
How about all the insane safety features being put on things because some idiot wasn't smart enough not to use a tool in a manner not intended, but was smart enough to go find a lawyer.
From your point if view, I would presume that you are not from the US, which where the debate began. A distinction which is indeed significant to the discussion, as in the US there is funcionally very little difference between a College and a University. In fact, sometimes the biggest distinction of a college is that it is a subset of a university.
Fifty or a hundred years ago there might have been a significant difference between the two, but in my lifetime (I'm 48) there has been no difference.
So you gain from copyright, fine. not a problem. Where the problem occurs is that for the next 100 years after your death the corporations involve still gain and still rip off your hiers. Not to mention if your work has been making them lots of money they will attempt to extend the copyright near the end of the 100 years... example Disney Co.. successfully got the copyright on Mickey Mouse upped from 50 to 100 years by convincing the American Congress that Disney without a copyright in Mickey Mouse would some how kill the company and probably "endanger" children by allowing misuse of said copyright.
The media companies need to revamp their marketing to take advantage of the new error.. not try to circumvent the law to maintain effectively a criminal enterprise.
Around here, most schools have written codes of conduct the explicitly state what types of actions will cause a student to be banned from extra curricular activities as well as actions that will result in suspension/expulsion. Everyone is supposed to read and sign one copy.. students participating in extra curricular activities a second copy or a more detailed version.
At least the school district my kids attended the behavior and punishments were explicitly laid out and followed as written.
So even if it wasn't school related and the school district found out about it.. you received the the punishment you had previously agreed to,, even if you were already being punished by the local legal establishment.
Lesson: Read and understand before you sign documents as someone, somewhere will hold you to it....
So, to summarize: I feel like cracking someone's WEP key to get on their net is pretty damn illegal. But I don't think hopping onto an open net is unsecured. In fact, the fact that it's open may be interpreted as a sign that the owner intends to allow open access!
Problem is most countries have passed laws, usually under the guise of fighting terrorism that explicitly state that connecting to ANY wap without express premission is illegal. So even if your neighbor intentionally leaves his wap open for the express purpose of sharing, you are still in violation of the law. Now, having said that.. the problem becomes what is considered express permission?
A wap with factory settings.. probably not. A wap with a ESSID of "Permission granted to Everyone".. maybe. A document, signed by owner and notorized.. your safe.
And also, there are many more GSM carriers in the US than you might think: http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_us.shtml . I can't say how many of those have unlimited EDGE data plans or useful coverage or competitive pricing, but it's just not accurate to say there's only two GSM players in the United States.
Yes, lots of carriers in total, but only 2 on the list, that I spot that come close to being nation wide (Alltel, AT&T and T-Mobile). So if you travel alot, as I do, unlocking an Iphone doesn't really buy me anything unless I want to be on the Alltel or T-Mobile networks. Quick scan of half a dozen carrier pages around the areas I travel most shows most don't have non-roaming plans and thus would end up costing me considerably more than an AT&T nation wide plan.
So it all depends on what you want to do with your phone and where you would be operating it the most.
Personally, I hope Apple gets nailed for making the phone not suitable for its intended use. Obviously, if the phone is working on someone else' network, then the unlocking activity didn't break the phone.
Given that there are at least 3 if not 4 different standards for cellphones in use in the US, and that only 2 carriers support gsm (AT&T and T-Mobile) what good does unlocking the Iphone do. Both gsm providers have horrible customer service and in quite a few places horrible cell service.
So unless you are planning on traveling a broad and willing to do without lots of the nifty features, what's the point ?
Really, why do most users want big pipes nowdays? Either they want web pages to load faster (in which case, really anything but dialup will work), or they want to use BitTorrent. If we had multicast that worked reasonably well, I think many BitTorrent users would switch, even if the multicast solution cost money.
Until the day, every show ever produced is available via iptv..there will still be bittorenters..
PopularTechnology.net--Why Adblock is bad for the "free" Internet
Adblock effectively robs these free sites of their revenue. If Internet Explorer came with a feature such as Adblock, you would effectively wipe out thousands of websites, maybe more.
As for the DRM - if their was a guarantee that the content wouldn't spread beyond the UK I don't think it would be there. BBC world the commercial arm wants to make money from international sales. If that one can be solved then the DRM would likely disappear. I do object to DRM - I don't object to its use if that means folks in the UK are paying £140 a year to fund TV that others in the rest of the world are watching at full SD/HD resolution for absolutely free.
And I for one wouldn't mind paying a reasonable fraction of the UK TV license fee to be able to download the shows I like (DrWho, Spooks) and those I might like (Torchwood, Dr Who Confidential), but that's not even an option...
Do not confuse your crap filter for infrastructure issues. Many television stations use the internet as an infrastructure adequately. Movies are distributed over it commercially. Video phones have been working fine for almost a decade now. The internet does require that you have a good solid connection at the server end to pull it off, but any Joe Average can get a ten meg unmetered line with a box for around $1200/y; that's not exactly huge scratch.
Like HELL! In my area to get anything approaching 10 Mb unmeter.. is impossible.. the best you could would be a T1 at $500/month or 10 times the current cost for 6Mb/758Kb dsl or 4Mb/500Kb cable.. that's it... So that is problem number 1, the service isn't available and problem number 2 is that more than likely 10M/10M connection will be atleast $100/month.
And a Joe Average, I don't pay for my connection, my company does and caps the expense at $50/month. So even if a 10/10 connection were available, I wouldn't take it if it exceeds the reimbursment limit.
Personally, an internet connection is not a necessity, it is a luxury...
Credit cards could be made much more secure. It would be expensive, no doubt, as it would require fundamental changes to the system, but compare that to the price of all the fraud currently committed and I'm pretty sure the ROI is pretty good.
I doubt that the ROI is there. Given that most CCCs are charging 10-25% interest per month and most (not all) endusers carry a balance. Combine that with all those wonderfull fees.. overlimit, late, etc.. and I bet the CCCs are still making way more money than they are loosing
Does the hard drive come with a separate license explicitly entitling you to a refund if you choose not to accept the extensive post-sale license it subjects you to?
I wouldn't be surprised if the act of reading the license constitutes acceptance. In other words, it is impossible to boot the machine far enough to be able to install alternative OS without violating some portion of the license.

Sorry, but most of the liberal judges will set aside a jury nullification
And just how many people have a) the time to read 20 pages of small print and b) the education to understand all the legalese ?
Simply put, NO one but lawyers or lawyer wannabes reads the terms of service because the average man on the street can't understand it
