    We want to have 7

When asked why I have so many kids, I often reply, "The world needs more people like me!"

The interesting statistic is not so much my immediate kids, but my parents grandkids. My parents have 18 grandkids, but only 5 grandsons and I have 4 of them! I'm the only one of my parents children or children-in-law in any type of engineering or science field. My brother in law has a PHd in family counselling and has 6 daughters!

Might be a good slashdot poll.

    Very well said.

I was in the same boat when I graduated in 1996. I was making almost twice as much as an electrician wiring houses. Granted, I was busting my ass in the scorching desert heat of Las Vegas, but it was good money. I took a HUGE pay cut to get my first job using my degree. It took me about 3 years to make more than I was making as an electrician.

It was said in another recent slashdot article that it's nice to have something to fall back on (for the poster that said it, I think it was being a mechanic). For me, my fall back is electrical work. It's not rocket science, but there's more of a demand and you can't outsource it!

  5. I know the difference and prefer dial-up on Many Internet Users Happy With Dial-Up · · Score: 3, Insightful
I am a Systems Administrator and the absolute LAST thing that I want to do when I am at home is log on. I have the dialup account in case I have to log in and resolve a conflict with a server. I do most of my stuff via SSH. 56K suits me fine.

I think it depends on what us dial-up users want. For me:

    • I hate anything with FLASH
    • I am not interested in movie clips from cnn.com or any other website for that matter
    • I don't download music
    • I don't online game
    • I occationally download a pdf file from the DMV or other useful site, but when I do, I can wait for it
    • I don't chat or IM
So yeah, SSH and e-mail (and the occational gander at slashdot.org) is about all that I use. Dial-up is fine.

maybe the Gaming Control Board is dirty

The Ron Harris case was not one of the board being dirty, it was of an individual being dirty. The other side of the coin is that there were few checks for Ron and he had a lot of trust. Shortly after this happened, Sandia National Labs came in and audited the Gamining Control Board for free. Turns out they were interested in the gaming industry since they are the only other place where EPROM use is so critical and they had interest in finding out how the board handled it.

At any rate, Sandia produced a huge report that showed the Board's short comings including being understaffed in the Electronic Services Division. The Board took the report to the legislature and got a budget approved that allowed them to hire more engineers to work in the lab. They also implemented all of the procedural changes that Sandia recommended. So this actually improved the proceedures of the board. Similar to a new exploit found in the kernel, right.

I got a job there shortly after the approval of hiring more engineers. The people that work for the Nevada Gaming Control Board are all honest, hard-working people. I don't work there any more, but I keep in touch with some of them. The consensus of those that knew Ron was that he had worked hard to build cases against slot cheats only to have their wrists slapped. He knew he could do a better job of it than they did. The only problem of course was that he abused the trust of the people because of the position he held. The judge made an example out of him. And rightly so, I think.

Dr Kanazawa theorises after a man settles down, the testosterone level falls, as does his creative output.

Apparently Dr Kanazawa has never had to remove several Hot Wheels cars from the innards of a toilet full of crap. Yeah, I might be a great computer guy, but it takes a pretty creative mind to stay ahead of the creative minds of my children. We used to lock certain doors in our house to keep our kids out of those rooms. It turns out that I inadvertently trained them all in the art of lock picking. If you want to look into the human mind, raise some kids and put a few obstacles in front of them and watch their minds work. It's truly fascinating.

I am the proud parent of 5 kids. Hey, if the intelligent part of the population doesn't reproduce, then it's all left up to the dummies. Have you ever SEEN the people on the Jerry Springer show. The world would be better off if our scientists would get off their butts and start raising kids with the same love of science that they have rather than try to eek out a few more discoveries after their 30s.

  9. DNS Authoritative Servers on Minimizing Downtime When Switching IP Addresses? · · Score: 2, Insightful
Watch out when reading the comments about changing the TTL on your DNS servers. It is not as simple as that since you state that your DNS servers are part of what would be moving to the new location. When you have a TLD like Network Solutions point your domain to a set of nameservers, that nameserver has to have a host NIC handle in their database. Changing the IP address of your nameservers is not difficult, but it is also not trivial. Plus, you have to remember that you have no control over the Network Solutions nameservers (ie. when they will be restarted, what the TTLs are etc.)

To get around this, there are two scenarios:
    1) Use outside nameservers as your authoritative servers for your domain. You may even be able to get your registrar to do this. Some registrars offer it as a feature and others may charge. In any case, having a separate set of nameservers means you can move from colocation facility to colocation facility with relative ease as mentioned in earlier posts.
    2) Set up two servers at the new colo facility as DNS servers and set all of your TTLs etc to the desired values. Registers those IPs as nameservers with Network Solutions (you may be able to do this through your registrar). Then change the IP numbers of your nameservers for the domain names. Wait 48 hours for total propagation and proceed as has been outlined in previous posts.

Please note that you really should contact your registrar and find out what the proceedure is for changing the IP address of a nameserver. I know that in the past when we had to do it, there was a template sent to Network Solutions specifically for this task. This is most likely easier now and probably different for each registrar.

Unfortunatly, I cannot think of an easy way to do any such overview.

How about porn sites as a good indicator?
I once heard that 10% of the sites on the internet got 90% of the hits. I had also heard that the majority of these were porn sites. Disclaimer: These are obviously hearsay statistics.

So what would be really interesting is to see what the major porn sites are running, the major news sites, and the major search engines. Google must account for a huge amounts of hits.

Streching the porn argument further, it would be interesting to see a report on which webservers push the most bandwidth. I work for a small web host and had a customer tell me that she talked with a guy that had once pushed 1.5 GB of data transfer in a month on an NT server. I then replied that I had a Linux server that had pushed out 1600 GB in a single month. (This was a plain white box PC with mild hardware by today's standards.) She had no idea such things were possible. Again, these kinds of numbers would be difficult to get, but very cool to view.

Once that's done, take some classes at the community college next year or go ahead and start at the university level. Senior year is over rated. I could have done without it altogether.

Chalk this one up to experience. Some battles are not worth it. Especially if you are dealing with small minded individuals who would rather get rid of the problem (or perceived problem) rather than address it.

What would he gain if he wins? A chance to go back to a school where he is made fun of and harrassed? How long would a legal battle take? Long enough for him to go to the last two days of his Senior Year? It's not worth it.
