If there are no Bush's or other obvious Haliburton controlled individuals in the white house on January 2nd, 2009, then I will post a public apology. Unfotunately, if we get Hillary in office, i don't think we are going to be any better off; I think we'll quickly lose the rights that Bush wouldn't touch, Like the 2nd amendment, while not reganing the ones already lost.
Your sarcasm is a little too obscure. IMO the service packs are mainly for corporate clients; tradition has been that they don't put the stuff in service packs that will get them in trouble with their security minded corporate customers, like the WGA tools, or the draconian DRM that you get from Windows Update, or the ridiculously draconian drm update that is going to be packaged with media player 11. However, now that they have gotten the federal government to "drink the coolaid" by even allowing WindowsXP in secure environments, there is nothing stopping them from forcing everyone to use update. Keeps reminding me of the antivirus company in "The Net". Grammar Nazi's: I may have made some mistakes in how I've written this, but the intent should be clear.
Very well expressed. I LOVE interviewing; I dress up fairly well, and if I can get past the "you don't have a college degree" portion of the interview, the Q&A phase is a Blast, trying to figure out what the interviewer wants to hear, and trying to tell them something that they didn't expect, but works. Unfortunately, after the Dot bomb, the "no college degree" thing, and the age discrimination (i'm 44) forced me to retire, except for an occasional consulting gig for the people who's networks/hardware I designed. Their loss, and I would rather be playing games and playing with whatever technology interests me at that moment, anyway. Consider this, though; My older Brother is a capital G genius; he worked at the pentagon in the 70's developing mainframe aps, can speak assemby more fluently than Bush can speak english, builds functioning AI routines for fun, has degrees in aerospace (space nut, like I am), encyclopedic knowledge of anything computers, electronics, chemistry, robotics. He works as a plumber; he refuses to "dress up' to go to a job interview, stating that he would never work anywhere that refused to hire him based on the way he looks. He's a Nice Guy, friendly, everybody likes him, and doesn't suffer from "age stagnation"; give him ANY problem in one of his many fields, and he'll give you a solution that works immediately, then refine it until it's elegant. But he'll probably never work in engineering/IT again, because the interviewer who would hire him doesn't exist.
That was the year I went to California for music; saw Pink Floyd in anaheim, but that might have been '77. Pretty Colors. Also saw The Who, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, AC/DC that year. and a bunch of others. the only one I was actually in a condition to remember is the Black Sabbath concert, and I just have some hazy memories. So, yeah, If I had been shot to mars (and i'm not saying I wasn't, it sounds possible) I would possibly have messed up some tests myself.
Ok, you obviously work for "Big Media". Or if not, you should. I posted the link: http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=34 523 in response to your other attack on my, and anyone else who is suspicious of DRM's, intelligence. The basic mechanism "if media is DRM'd, it will only play back if you have the DRM subsystem installed on your computer" is not in contention here, not that it's actually unbreakable or anything.
Note: the logic you used to deconstruct my post is impressive; I was not even close to expressing myself as clearly as I should have. The problem is I'm just not sure I have the ability to transfer the spirit of my thoughts into dialogue as well as would be necessary to avoid errors in syntax and meaning to a more than usually discerning reader. This is pretty sad considering my past education and work experience; I will quit the debate now, defeated by a TKO.
It's not FUD. Check this link: http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=34 523 it's pretty widely known. I'm sorry if I implied that Media Center did this in the past... I also have media Center, for about a year.
Be real careful when you do updates; the 3 day limit is tied to changes in DRM made by Windows media 11.
I've got a media Center laptop, it pretty much rocks right now, but you can't do auto-update anymore.
can other Wi-Fi stuff play, like palms/PDA's, gameboys, PSP's, and the latest crop of consoles? from the Website it looks like they only support PC, Pocket-PC, and phones from i-mate and Nokia, but that would be a great feature to add to the PSP.
I think I might just possibly have a clue about it. Leaving out the obvious examples I could site, like the sony rootkit, I'll limit myself to the microsoft DRM subsystem. Yes, it does do as you say, it supposedly prevents you from playing content which requires DRM. Some OTHER things microsoft DRM does (as of the latest incarnation): 1) prevents you from moving your DRM'd content from one system to another, like from your personal computer to your laptop. 2) prevents you from backing up your license info for your DRM infected media. computer hard crashs? you lose all your stuff. 3)If your software makes use of the MS DRM subsystem, it will connect to MS to verify that you have the right to make a copy of copy-protected media. 4) REALLY nasty restrictions on recorded TV for Media Center Computers, like limiting you to 3 days. 5) if used on a hardware DRM system like the intel DTCP-IP/TCPA or AMD's (yeah, I can't believe AMD would do this, either) Presidio, it can lock down your entire computer.... 6) 6) Never mind. if anyone in this day and age thinks that DRM is good, they either just don't pay attention, or work for a company that makes its $$ from DRM. or some law enforcement types, i guess. I refuse to "license" my hardware or media; if I spend money on it above a negligible fee, it is MINE and no one should have the ability to restrict my fair use.
What about DRM? I've managed to keep the evil beast off my Win2k computers by only clicking about half the windows update "critical patched", but i'm not seeing anything on whether or not ie7 requires DRM. I suppose with so many users using WinXP (with integrated DRM & Bloat!!!) it's not a common question, but some of us like the windows interface AND freedom from malware/spyware. I won't have a virtual win2k installation I can test it with until I get back from my current trip, but i AM sort of curious about it. disclaimer: I also run Debian, and used to be a HP-UX admin, so my using a windows interface should NOT get me negative mod points. I like games, and win2ks is a rock steady server.
Actually, you can get a high-end turntable these days with a USB port. I just use line-out to my nforce2 audio in, and sample at about double CD quality; that ALMOST gets all the sound that is on vinyl that a CD misses. As for P2P, I can't use it anymore. My ISP politely asked me to stop, as it was really killing their ability to service their other customers. I'm serious; they didn't threaten to throttle me, kick me off, or sue me, they very politely requested that I cut back as much as possible. Which sucks, in a way. if they were assholes, i would have just circumvented whatever they tried. Now I have to play nice. Grrr.
Dungeon Keeper. Damn. I still play that. But i'm surprised no one has mentioned "The Movies"; as is expected it is not as cool as he said it would be. But it is still pretty darn cool, and classing it as a tycoon-type game is wrong. Besides, it is FUN making movies using the game. example at: http://movies.lionhead.com/studio/Changestorm
Actually, as this is/., the headline should be "Odds being placed in Las Vegas as to whether the DRM removal hack for the Zune will arrive before the device". The smartest people don't work making DRM schemes; the smartest people play at breaking DRM schemes.
I've had, seen, and read that arguement before. There are 500,000 (approx) active duty army troops; approx 700,000 national guard. In the year 2000 according to the U.S. Census, there were 26.4 million military veterans in the country; of those, about 9 million are under the age of 45. According to the NRA, about 84% of veterans are gun owners, with 215 million guns total in civilian hands. Doing the math, that gives us a trained core group of militia that is already armed of about 7.6 million. And I refuse to believe that 100% of military units and commanders would follow orders to attack U.S. Citizens inside the borders of the united states; some active duty troops and Nat. Guard are going to come over to the Constitutionalist side (besides, we all SWORE to uphold and defend the Constitution of the U.S. from all enemies foreign and domestic). In a nutshell, if Haliburton & Bushco screw up and heat the water to the point that the frog feels it, you could have a 7.6 million man & woman trained infantry militia to contend with; you are going to have heavy weapons & some aircraft due to not everyone in the military being Evil. Lets add in 5% of the constitional militia of the u.s., which is every male between the ages 17 & 45 (US code title 10, section 311) to get another 5 million or so militia; both these groups are going to likely have BETTER small arms than the average active duty soldier who is stuck with a pea shooter.223 M16, while the civilians are going to bring out the 30-06's,.300 magnums, etc. The 2nd amendment was designed to keep the government honest; while we can field a well armed and well trained 12 million man militia, the government HAS to obey at least some of the rules they want to break, out of fear.
I tell anyone who I think could begin to wrap their brains around the concept; a lot of people, even otherwise bright intelligent folks, just don't seem to be capable of understanding that THEY are being screwed. I find it more in younger people; if you were in public school in the late 60's or 70's, you can easily believe in corrupt government being something you should care about; if you were in Public school in the 80's or 90's, then you have difficulty looking away from anything bright & shiny. We are toast. I have no idea of what could be done to make people DO something. I just bug my congress critters to keep the 2nd Amendment (our government reset button) alive, and hope i'm not doing my kids a disservice by educating them on the things they don't teach you in school.
I read the transcript of that; it wasn't QUITE as clear cut as you are making it, but close enough, to the best of the guys knowledge he was hired to rig the machines.
The theory that the guy researched his victims on myspace seems a little far-fetched to me. The Guy was living in a Jeep; (as a wrangler owner i'm going to have to assume it was a cherokee), libraries won't connect to myspace in most places, and while he could have been a wardriver, he just doesn't look the type. Now, I can see the possibility that he was browsing for teens on the internet, and then came across a picture that showed the girls in that class ("here are me and my blonde airhead friends in english class!"), which would sync with the myspace theory, but it doesn't go along with the previously released information, that he stood the girls up and discarded the ones that didn't fit his "vision". However, I don't find the myspace theory any more likely than the one where the guy was hired to do it by the guy(S) who had been molesting the girls in a club-like atmosphere for several years in order to silence a possible witness.
I think the most likely story is this: the guy was a nut. he may have had the name of one girl who he had seen on the street or in a newspaper, and may have asked which class she was in. the rest of the girls were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The point I was trying to make in a sarcastic way was that until AT THE VERY EARLIEST, late 1992/early 1993, and then only on R&D planes, there was no way a F-14 could drop a bomb. the electronic / mechanical hookups were not there. until a F-14 with an APG-71 Radar was put up in the air, the control software for air to ground munitions of any sort did not exist; prior to this the only way a F-14 could attack ground targets in ANY WAY was with: A: releasing not-empty fuel drop tanks over the enemy. B: releasing unexpended ordinance over the enemy (heavily frowned upon, not cost efficient). C: Strafing runs with the guns. D: throwing hand grenades from the opened canopy. E: low Level sonic booms.
I really truely was a Avionics Fire Control Technician (2nd class) on board the CV-62 Independence, and worked on both F/A-18 APG-65 and F-14 AWG-9 Radar/Fire Control systems at a component level; at one time I could probably build you one from parts without a schematic. The F-14 Just Could Not Do It.
Oddly enough, the "F" in F-14 stands for "FIghter"; I give you my personal guarantee that a U.S. Navy F-14 never dropped an agent orange bomb on vietnam. Considering that all F-14's were pure fighter, as in no strike capability, until after I got out of the military in '91, I sort of doubt that they dropped any other type of bomb on vietnam, either.
