So, what is your basis for saying that occasional memory errors are acceptable?
Sir, do you disagree with Anadtech's lowest error rate of 1 bit-flip in an 8 hour run as documented here. Anandtech seems to imply that one bit-flip in an 8 hour period is an excellent result. Please comment.
Failure rates for those were substantially above average; the reason for failure was almost always platter failure.
Check Ebay for dead drives with good pictures of the label. Pay no more than 10- 15 dollars
I use these DeathStar drives as cheap TEMP storage. Usually companies clean out their TEMP mapped drives with a cron job, I just wait until the drive breaks, and then throw it in the trash. Employees use it to store mp3s or files the're about to burn to CD. If the Deathstar was marketed properly, they could have made it a real success!
You know those case-mod stories on/. a while back where someone replaced the metal case on their HD with a plexiglass one? They reported that the drive worked well enough to use (though I wouldn't trust it).
You should NEVER trust any hard disk. Always assume it will fail. No drive has an MTBF near inifinity
Thats why we complain when things dont work, to warn others so the scam doesnt continue
If the defect rate is 0.5%, you have a chance of being affected, but 99.5% are happy so the Court might not believe you, how can you prove an intermittent fault? You'd need a videocamera, but who's going to pay for the videocamera? Toyota is one of the car manufacturers that say their product is perfect so you can't return it if it's defective. I'm sure the Toyota factory people are very good, but not so good that they can withdraw the warranty!
The problem never was with connecting to feel other peoples pain, I do it in movies still, the problem is people like to exploit your emotions. Alot of the movies and pictures you see of africa are designed to make you feel sorry for them and give money, most of the time the money does not even go to the people, just to the government.
True, and if you think about it, that's exactly what movies are designed to do. This is why a lot of people buy big cars and big ranches with lots of land, because nobody can legally come in and bother you. Telemarketers break this barrier, and could ring you up and start crying saying, "I'm a poor starving Indian, please buy my product and help me". Very bad.
Then there are the tons of reeders who put up put up pourly edited posts, and think, gosh look at this wonderful content I just contributed. I should get all that expensive, extremely time consuming work other people did for free. I don't buy the argument that you can measure the quality of content buy the volume of werds.
The way I see it. My participation in./ isn't as a "contributor." I am a consumer of their product. I am consuming./'s bits and bandwidth as I type
The Ethiopean farmers work *VERY VERY* hard to produce usually nothing, because the rains don't come. It's nobody's obligation to reward work, it's the obligation of the person performing the work to plan for a reward.
For wasting moderator's time, the Trolls should pay money to post, or perhaps Insightful posters should pay more because more bandwidth is used by the majority of people browsing at +4... Free or charge any way you like, after all Brazilian rainforests are being chopped down but Mother Nature can't sue consumers because Mother Nature creates for free. Slashdot is an ecosystem.
I dont hate anyone. Unlike Buddha I cannot handle the burden of trying to connect emotionally to everyone either
No, I think you're afraid of connecting because you are afraid of the amount of pain others suffer. If you emotionally connect with every Ethiopean they show on TV, you would feel very very bad. So you ignore them, and that feels even worse. The amount of selfishness and hatred in the World can overwhelm any nice person. The US Government didn't sign Kyoto because a lot of the American people think that France, UK, India, Taiwan, Hawaii, Alaska, Russia, China are "up there" connected to Canada. The US Government represents the American people, and the drug dealer in the ghetto gets the same vote as the wisest slashdotter. George Bush represents the people that dropped out of School when they were 16 unable to write English, who get minimum wage and must have a car to get to work, and he represents them well. These people don't post to Slashdot because they're working 3 jobs.
Totally incorrect. Did you check that your Intel CPU executes all instructions correctly? No, you take it on the good faith and trust of Intel. Do you verify the CD you just burned? No, you take it on faith and trust that the CD wrote correctly, which is actually wrong, quoting:
cool looking $180 bug ridden coastermaker, troubled software included
won't recognize some brands of media, including some maxwell disks I went and got lots of. It comes with direct cd maker which it tells you not to use because it has bugs, and the other software included is an old version of adaptek which has frequent burning errors turning media into coasters, a real dissapiontment
From Jacob Zammito, July 15, 2001
Do you check your motherboard with a logic probe to see if it writes data to the RAM/EIDE controllers/Bus correctly? No, you take it on faith and trust in the motherboard manufacturer, an intermittent fault can always appear. For a design fault in motherboard/CPU/RAM to cause an OS crash, it has to happen very often, an intermittent bit flip would cause your data to go funny and become unrecognised. If you fit ECC RAM, how do you know that it wasn't made counterfeit by a Chinese company, and it's actually normal RAM? My boss's machine had ECC RAM, and he got bit errors that caused NTFS to write a corrupt MFT (File Allocation Table), he lost everything on his hard disk, the RAM was counterfeight.
Whenever you buy a computer you trust and have faith in a lot of companies (those same companies that everyone hates because they're globalising). You trust that any manufacturing fault would occur on all units produced, and so other people would complain. What if just your one is manufactured bad?
This world is a very ignorant world, filled with hateful cruel people, who will exploit and abuse you if you try to be a nice person.
You poor poor man. To lose faith in the good nature of humanity is a terrible crime against hope. I think you need to hear this - at the very least, I love you.
1600 years is no where near enough time for humans to evolve an adaptation for living harmoniously under such variable lighting conditions. Such an adaption would require at least hundreds of thousands of years to develop, if it was possible at all.
Actually, it's possible for "evolution" to occur overnight in the event of a mass extinction. If people go to live in Lapland and only 0.01% are genetically inclined to good health in the dark, then if the other 99.99% died out within 160 generations the old genes would have disappeared. Depressed people tend to reproduce less, aggravating their mass extinction.
Ham radio may just be a hobby, but it is an important one. We provide emergency communications when celular, telco, and power are dead. It promotes international goodwill. It allows many people to learn RF engineering and become great engineers. For the nerds, you can play with high power RF, pass data, send video, bounce signals off the moon, use sattelites, and much more....
You are a voice from the past. For the US Government to increase the effectiveness of the DMCA, they must have full control over communications. If the Government doesn't like how many people are using Kazaa in a suburb, all they have to do is cut the power and switch off a couple of fibers to drop your net connection and phone lines over SONET. Your ham radio is an impediment to them, and so they are removing you.
RF engineers are a bunch of people that can mod Xboxes and mock the DMCA by circumventing access restrictions. The RIAA doesn't want you, and they control the US Government.
Creating jobs in countries where 25% of the population is starving to death is not ethical? I think you need to fine-tune your argument a little, man.
Damn right, Boston programmers don't pay the State taxes of any other State, so Cali, Utah, Arizona, Virginia MUST BOYCOTT Boston software, and any other software produced out of State. Get real
It tells the populous what they want to hear. The the egghead PhDs who spent 25 years of their life at school are not really that smart and would have been better off with a high school diploma and maybe technical degree. It allows the populous to believe that intelligence and learning is just a matter of luck and they would have been able to earn an advance degree if they would had only been given the brains and the breaks. The fact that they slept and drugged their way though high school has nothing to do with anything
Are you saying this is a bad thing?
Most of the populous consists of Jocks, that's why they bully geeks. Geeks are protected by the police and government because they are of financial use (Jock populous wants shiny stuff). This kid whether he's talking crap or not is acting to protect us hardcore geeks that are incapable of making molotov cocktails, getting drunk and shooting cops because we are worn down after a lifetime of bullying, and are only now capable of vegitating in front of a VAX's green screen glow in the basement. I think this kid is a hero.
Now, that's the law. Here's my opinion: in a functioning economy with competition, discrimination due to color is usually a really, really stupid thing to do, regardless of morality. Minority people's money is just as good as anyone else's
Yup, alternatively the shopkeeper would feel *forced* to sell you a product, get resentful, follow you out of the shop, and stab you after phoning his redneck buddies.
Minority people's money is just as good as anyone else's. If you don't want it, I guarantee there is a competing business that does.
In Utah, you'll have to buy a car and drive 200 miles out of State (reliability - not a Chevvy), so the minority consumers' cost of buying the competing product is much higher, which economically discriminates against the minority consumer.
all of my users are Unix stupid, so they never log into shell.
WHOOOOOPS! I was just hired by the company I'm now working for, and the admin is used to Unix-stupid people. Within a week I'd found his porn collection stored in/dev/S**-MAC/coolstuff/av and I was setting up FTP accounts for customers without the sysadmin's permission when he went to the toilet and forgot to log out. He wants to get me fired now for messing with "his" job area, apparently DB programmers aren't "allowed" to set up FTP accounts without the sysadmin's permission. Sometimes being too clever is a problem. What the hell happened to meritoacracy? I was just pleasing the customer...
Not all value is economic value. The person running a racist business might very well feel that the emotional cost of having to serve "the wrong people" far outweighs the money he/she gets from them. So he/she would -- under exquisite economic theory -- choose not to sell. It's the "correct" decision, economically
Correct, very few people would sell both their arms even if you offer a price well above their arms' lifetime economic value.
Beyond this though, a barter system forces the rich to appear poor (assuming a rich man is a rational consumer) by outward self-deprivation and aggressively bartering. The dishonesty required of him to hide his true self, would create resentment in this entire sector of the population. Encouraging dishonesty and aggression in the rich is... an interesting post-Enron strategy
Not really... I mean, sure he could get charged $1000 for a pack uf gum, but this is still capitalism we're talking about here. If you try to charge him $1000, then I'll ofer him $999. But then, someone else will be willing to sell it to him for $800. Eventually, the price will be driven back down to where it would have been anyways.
OH MY GOD! It's all making sense now. The US Government has made Patents last for life + 70 years, and will now allow these temporary -> permanent monopoly corporations with no privacy regulations (aka Minority Report) to charge rich consumers more than poor consumers. This will have the effect of subsidizing the poor consumer. Since rich and poor consumers must at least consume food, redistribution of wealth occurs. Why not just have a welfare state and use tax for redistribution like everybody else?
One worrying possibility is that since heads of corporations tend to be rich, they will form a tacit agreement and make products free for rich consumers, in the hopes of striking an intercorporate business deal with such a rich consumer (why do they always have expensive wine at CEO dinners that their own workers could never afford?)
What about having permanent voting stations throughout the country, and allowing people (with their ID cards) to vote at ANY location for any election that they are eligible to vote in?
The corrupt politicians will make multiple copies of ID cards and vote in multiple places. Remember, how do you vote if you can't trust the police, and can't trust the US President and NSA's carnivore where DMCA Judges slap you with a "I know you have mp3s, our airport facial recognition cameras know where you are, if you vote you go to jail"?
Then someone from your grandmother's village could travel to another village to vote, away from the power of the local corrupt politician
In the US, even a waitress can afford $50 gas thanks to Bush *conveniently* bombing the correct Countries. In India, in terms of purchasing power it costs $5000 to travel a meaningful distance.
Of course, police could block village exits / transportation on voting day, but that could be remedied by having a national hotline to anonymously report abuse, dispatching national police (or UN observers) to monitor a polling station.
Where would this national hotline go? It's a poor country, nobody cares, everybody is just trying to feed themselves like US factory workers working two jobs on minimum wage. If you're not corrupt then you can't feed yourself, the salary is so low. In India they work six jobs, and the children learn advanced calculus at 12 years of age or they starve to death (quite an incentive to study). CNN doesn't care because at the end of the day corruption and abuse are nothing, there are tens of thousands of dead Sierra Leonians children with both their hands chopped off walking around, with no hospitals, nowhere to go
Most common excuse given to hide from the fact that the caste system has always been extremely unfair to the lower castes, a highly shameful, dehumanizing and severe abuse of human rights
Caste system abuses the Human Rights of lower castes, the US dollar abuses the Human Rights of waitresses, meatpackers and recently the US IT workforce. So what's new?
Therefore there was no need for any ID Cards. Sigh, practical technology being replaced with technology that infringes on freedoms
WHAT???!!! My Grandmother lived in North East India. The corrupt policemen guarding the polls from "Pakistani terrorists" knew most of the people, they knew she would vote for the non-corrupt politician so they told her "You've voted already" and told her to go home. She didn't manage to vote once in the last ten years of her life. I told her she shouldn't even try, some people that insisted on being able to vote were killed. My Uncle was murdered by a corrupt politician (run over by a Governmet truck that failed to stop and then ceased to exist according to the records). THIS IS NO JOKE.
