...low-quality healthcare for everybody, as in Canada...
Canada has low-quality health care? That's a subjective statement. Would you say it's 60% as good as the American system? 70%? 80%? How do you define "low quality"; by referring to apocryphal claims in anti-Canadian newspaper stories?
Just because you hear bitching from some Canadians about the Canadian system don't take it to mean that it doesn't work well. A favourite passtime up here is complaining about the government, mainly because we have so much of it. And having a government-run system provides one focal point for frustration (as compared to the US).
Pretty much the same here. I asked for RedHat (it was 2002) to be installed when I purchased the new machine but, oops, Linux has to be installed before Windows. Vendor screwup.
I've played around with the Knoppix CD but don't quite know what to do with Linux yet, it seems complicated.
I guess I've been dumbified from too much Windows usage and it'd be great to get Linux working, but I feel it would be too time-consuming.
I feel for ya, buddy, those of us that *can* draw (with, like, their hands and stuff, with a pencil and paper or a rock and a cave wall) are rapidly becoming obsolete. Very sad, isn't it.
My advice is, if you are holding a protest, always have someone who is some distance away film the entire event. Heck, have several, from different vantage points. That way, if the police aren't justified in their actions, you have the proof right there, and proper steps can be taken.
Good idea, just make sure that possible crowd "hothead" behaviour is also documented. It often takes only one or two agitators to motivate a crowd, and doing so is a pretty simple technique.
"We should eliminate the entire social welfare system."... "Individuals who are unable to fully support themselves and their families through the job market must, once again, learn to rely on supportive family, church, community, or private charity to bridge the gap."
Which is pretty much exactly what I said. Libertarians expect people who have spent hundreds of years not giving a fuck about each other to pick up the slack.
What I want to know is how do we get to that great state of promised future existence where we only have to work 2 or 3 days per week
while doing the things we want while driving our own flying cars. Is that soon?
I'm one of those people that's willing to work hard to get there, but I fear that "the promised leisure future" for my offspring is just a scam to get everyone to become more of a slave to the system.
The jobs that are leaving are high-skilled programming jobs that are probably filled by someone with a degree.
Every other historical "efficiency increase" has been physical in nature (I.E., we can fabricate this *thing* faster through the use of this other physical *thing*).
Yes, I'm simplifying to make my point.
Now, with extremely powerful hardware and software, the thinking work behind making new things can be automated. Once the human brain has been outsourced (and by "outsourced", I mean, given to the computer) there's nowhere left to go for us meatbags except into the much-vaunted "service industry".
There are too many "professional managers" at the higher levels. I.E., people who have little to no knowledge of the business at hand. This is common not just in IT-related areas.
You could take peoples excess heat and use it somehow
Idea: Put programmers under intense deadlines, generate heat (warming the building) and perspiration (could be used to cool processors). Another possible useful output of the human body would be excrement and urine as ejected. This can be easily spontaneously created by doubling the workload and halving the schedule.
And you know babies whose craniums haven't yet stitched together yet? When they get aggravated, the brain pumps up and down through the hole...you can actually see and feel it. So, hook up some hind of pressure sensitive membrane to this baby head hole and transmit the pulsations to a hydraulic system.
Sure, only one baby equipped this way would provide minimal power, but just imagine a million of them optimized this way!
Anyone with a functioning brain could foresee that the US would not take an attack on their home ground lightly. After attacked, adopt an aggressive position and attitude. If someone smacked you in the face in the dark what would you do? Whimper away?
It was very clever of the attackers since they knew the widespread emotional trauma it would cause as people watched it live. Excellent manipulation.
For decades, multi-billion dollar companies have thrown millions of dollars at advertising agencies in order to promote their products.
In this cut-throat business (which is fundamentally based on deception in order to make more money) the advertisers threw cash liberally. Now, people seem to be rejecting advertising and have the ability to pick and choose via the internet.
I'm assuming that if Bush gets kicked-out all will return to normal.
What do you realistically expect to change if Kerry wins? Pull out from Iraq - is that one of his promises? Fixing the debt - is that one of his promises? Can you think of anything major that he has promised to do?
Don't forget that The Daily Show got a huge boost in viewership last year after the spammer interview (which was wildly popular as it struck a nerve in most all net-connected people). A lot of people glommed onto the show after that. A lot of viewers are wannabes that just want to be able to find common ground at the proverbial water cooler at work. It's viral marketing.
Lately there seems to be more bias to the left, but I still watch it because it's very often very funny.
I checked the Asus site but didn't find the answers to this.
Which newer processors can I use in my A7M266-D motherboard (I have 1.58s now)? My understanding is that I can run it with only one CPU; would one ~3Ghz processor provide a noticeable difference over the two existing ones?
And regarding RAM, do I really need ECC/registered?
There's this guy who drinks at a local bar every night. One night, he came in and ordered only coffee. The bartender was curious and asked him why he wasn't buying beer.
The man replied, "I don't drink anymore... last night, I blew chunks."
"Oh that's nothing", the bartender replies. "Everyone gets a little sick after drinking too much at times."
"No, no", the man replies. "You don't understand. Chunks is my dog!"

What you're describing is the "Mythical Man Month", as coined many moons ago by Fred Brooks in his book of the same title.
Well, then, if the phenomenon is already well known, why should all us white collar drones toil at somethings that are already figured-out?
Do you think it is because the powers that be insist that the proles "have something to do in order to keep them out of trouble" (the idle hands theory)?
Just wondering, because it's becoming quite evident that the available workforce in the first world vastly exceeds the amount of work that actually has to be done.
The lesson of the modern economy is that businesses need to realize that no part of the company is less valuable than another. Whereas in the past, the rich could safely exploit their employees, they now do it at the risk of their own base of wealth and power.
This is the failure of current "forward" thinking.
As the internet progresses, the western powers will diminish unless backed-up by military power.

Exactly - James Burke in Connections (1&2)!
I was thinking the same thing.
MythBusters is pretty good, but I just can't get past that tough-guy moustache and the complete sidekickness of whatshisface.
Apparently, there were a few urban legends-related pilots tested and they went with the show that promised edgy camera work and stuff that goes boom.
Canada has a TV show that used to be called @Discovery.ca (now it's DailyPlanet) that airs weekdays at 6PM. Do Americans get this channel?
I can

I'm curious as the actual cost of outsourcing.

Captain Obvious out.
Is that your management philosophy?
That's what makes Plan 9 From Outer Space so great.

I hate "the curve" of understanding.

Maybe the political notes should go to politics.slashdot.org and not so much here, eh?
It really is getting tiresome.
I made a similar comment yesterday. You left out the fact that the League of Women Voters used to be the moderators for the debates.

Thanks. My system seems to have a cooling problem so I run it case off with an external fan blowing cool air on it.

So *you're* that guy...

The only good dog is one that eats cats.

Maybe that's the short-term goal.
