When the bits explode from a rotating drive you always have the option of collecting them manually from the inside of the case and re-assembling via backup. You cannot do this with SSD.
I have dual 120GB SSDs in this MacBook Pro (is that a "self-reference?) in RAID0 [1]. It's pretty fast. Not enough storage, though, and maxxed-out to 8GB.
[1] Yes, it's backed-up.
In order to bring some sanity to this situation I propose that we adopt a 5 year plan during which some people will get SSDs and others will get the spinners. It'll have to be a random lottery-style thing, so as to not give the impression of market control.
Even for 3D CAD (which I do) use, even two 19" screens is stretching things a bit. Pun unintended. When intensely focusing on detail you can easily get neck pain from side-to-side head motion. At home I use a 30" 2560x1600 panel and that's a bit better (it replaced 2-19"s and 2-22"s in a quad setup) but still takes a lot of movement.
Has anyone else noticed printing getting smaller these days or are my 50 year-old Mark One Eyeballs deteriorating along with the rest of me?
I seem to recall that it was named, "Mariana's Trench" at one time. I posit that the Marianas of the world got together and had the apostrophe removed. Because, well, you know, like, oh, nevermind...
Well, I for one, am just relieved that at least someone is exploring where we might have to go after the megadisaster of Climate Change kills us all in 250 years.

Check your expensive coffee!
But what about a spherical, hypothetical cat in a locked box?
(OMG!) If this is real, than this (bang, pow!) would be amazing! Paul
I do 3D CAD for piping design. Are there "really fancy high-end monitors" that I don't know about?
How does this compare to the multi-thousand dollar CAD video cards?
The Last Revision
The Draftsman and the Engineer
are men of skill and vision.
At least they are until they hear
the hated word -- REVISION.
The Engineer with practiced eye
surveys his grand design.
The Draftsman draws so expertly
each complicated line.
"Complete," they sigh contentedly,
"Miraculous Precision."
Oh, Optimists! Tomorrow brings
catastrophe! REVISION!
Revision One adds this piece;
Revision Two improves it.
Revision Three makes it just right;
then Revision Four removes it.
"You can't do this, you can't do that."
"We'll wait for a decision."
"But in the meantime, just revise
that last revised Revision."
Revise! Revise! The very word
fills Engineers with dread.
Tho' die they must, they'll be revised
to make damn sure they're dead.
They hope that God's no Engineer
when he makes his decision.
If once they win their wings they hope
there'll be no Last Revision.
+10 for parent comment, s'il vous plait.
Can you eludicate?
Agreed. Not everyone "deserves" a degree (I'm not talking about perceived ability, rather potential).
I'm assuming that most will agree that there are a lot of "feelgood, will pay" degrees given to otherwise unemployable individuals.

Canada's Hat raises hand, politely. Would you like to rent a bridge?

I was alive when US nuked Japan.
I'm getting off your lawn now, sir!
Are you talking about computer/software "engineers" or REAL engineers? There's a difference, you know.
I'm offended that you left me out of your evaluation! All studies have to have an upper limit otherwise they are meaningless.
Those of us with sub-100 IQs are offndd and also wonder WTF are yopu talking about.
I like boobies.

I guess I stand corrected, thanks.
I wonder how often Slashdotters admit they were wrong.

I think the issue here is pressure in the lungs, not percentage of gases breathed. Liquids are (mostly) incompressible.
Well, sort of. I had a Canadian version way back when (called Alex, I think - OK, found it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minitel#Minitel_in_other_countries) I lived in Montreal.
Then I forgot about the concept until I discovered CompuServe years later. That led to Matrox Spherenet and the rest is a jumbled mess. Do_North
I like it!
Can I recycle trash to your personal doorstep or do I have to think global, act local and need a feel-good grant for this?
I recycle when it makes sense to me. Slow infusion of feel-good environmentalism? Fuck off.
