You're posting at a technology website but you adopt an anti-technology viewpoint vis-a-vis humanity? Please explain this to me in non-complicated terms.
Is your outlook that 'humans are stupid and gross and must be stopped' or 'humans are creative, adaptive and cool"?
Bravo, ArcherB. I'd given up as a long time contributor for awhile due to downmods on the Global Warming "discussion". At least you're getting an "Insightful" mod.
I declined to moderate even though I received points regularly and I recently dropped my subscription.
It just didn't seem reasonable for me to continue to support a site that rewards alarmist theories/comments based on flaky evidence.
The doomers are drama queens and slippery in their predictions. The goalposts and degree of pending catastrophe are easily-changed variables. Whatever it takes to get alarmist headlines and the latest "scientific studies" blaming AGW for 3-eyed frogs, lack of smell in roses and the Red Sox winning the World Series.
That's the thing that never ceases to amaze me about the people on slashdot - they scream bloody murder if you try to tell them they can't change the OS on a device or modify source code, but tell them that they're losing their actual freedoms / rights to an increasingly controlling government and they cheer it on.
Aren't most Slashdotters computer/software people? If so, it should come as no surprise that the real world is foreign to them.
At the risk of invoking Godwin, I'm going to point out that a certain party during WWII had determined - via phrenology and other pseudoscientific means - that certain classes of people were fundamentally flawed...
Let's not forget that those who were not named in your post had fellow thinkers in Asia.
Good point. TV and the internet seems to have encouraged some groups' certainty of things (pseudo-experts, 14 year-old forensic specialists and trolls).
That's not a good thing, but hey, whatever sells must be right.
And yet, somehow, some people disregard the fact that the "Climate Science Industry/Gravy Train" has tons more government money behind it than those evil oil company-sponsored deniers.
Mod me down, I'm used to it and don't care anymore.
Sheesh, memory lane. I was no early adopter, but I remember my 14.4 modem-equipped 486DX66 connecting to CompuServe. Then I discovered the REAL internet via Matrox's Spherenet.
Remember, we live in a world where many Africans believe that having intercourse with a virgin will cure HIV. Then there are some cultures that punish women with floggings, execution, or even immolation, for having the audacity to be raped. Men are killed for wearing shorts, and lesbians are raped in an effort to cure them.
Isn't today International Women's Day? You can tell by the feminist organizations' parades in the streets protesting how the fairer sex is treated in other parts of the world.
The Dual-Link DVI adaptor is much more complex...
And it *still* doesn't work properly with 30" non-Apple monitors.
I'm surprised that you feel the need to clarify that communists are actually fascists.

Your initial assumption is that "humanity is doomed" if something is not done.
I disagree with your assumption.

Set an upper limit on the cost to achieve "planet-saving" solutions (and who's going to be paying for it), then we'll talk.

Is the Second still in effect?

It's not really a technical issue, it's a perceived control issue.

Steve Martin was born in Waco, Texas.
Can we cut out the "Protip" bullshit? Thanks.
Abe is now sleeping with the fishes.

ThinkGeek is pretty neat. I've bought a lot of stuff from them (not much lately though).
I keep The Rabbit of Caerbannog plush toy in my magician's hat.
I always thought you had to cool it to some extreme temperature to make it into a liquid.
I don't understand how nitrogen is going to liquefy.
Isn't that theory known as peak shaving?
You can also supply the power grid by rigging hamster wheels
Why don't we just breed bigger hamsters?

Nah, that'd be me (according to my ex-wife).
Gardyloo!
