  1. Re:Bad getting worse... on Examining an Automated Spam Tool · · Score: 1

This brings forth an interesting twist to the open relay worms. What if the trojan/worm read the address book of all the found email clients, and then emailed one of these "confirm my account so you can send me mail" messages to every one of the people in the list.
The message would appear legitimate, and could be sent right through the open relay they just created. Once the confirmation emails appear (the worm would need to intercept them and keep them from appearing in the user's inbox), add the sender to a list.
Once the list has X members, the host would distribute the list to the other open relays.

It's so devious because it looks legitmate, and appears to confirm the "sender," when it actually confirms the recipient.
The only fishy part of it would be the text of the email. Spams typically have horrible messages, grammatically.

Hrm... I better get coding. (just kidding)

Could this be explained by string theory?
Maybe the individual particles/strings were close enough together to cause constructive intereference? They appeared as one larger particle because it essentially was. However, the system was unstable, and "decayed" into the other particles almost instantly. Really, they were different particles all along.

That's my completely amateur wild guess. Anyone who actually knows what they're talking about care to comment?

Yeah, and what's really crazy is how society is exactly the same. I mean, it's not like some significant event changed the way Americans view the world in the last few years.

Remember when you were a kid and you told your parents that you wanted to be an astronaut when you grew up? What happened to that, huh? Does that make you a liar? Of course not. It means things changed.

You can play this game with any politician, and just about any person, in any job, anywhere.

Good idea. Let's remove the serial port. We'll save space and it'll look cleaner -- those d-sub connectors are so ugly.
    Yeah right.
The problem is that sure, it saves space on the board, but it takes up more space overall. If you need a serial port, you have to go buy another cable (and probably a USB hub, which is at least 2 additional cables). Then instead of a nice, clean, direct to the board connection, you have a random extra cable coming out the back of your computer. Grrrr....
And what's with calling it legacy hardware? 8-track is legacy hardware. RS-232 is not. It's used quite a bit in my industry (mobile electronic controls), and will be for the forseeable future. We've had a lot of trouble finding laptops that have rs-232 ports, and finally we just gave up. We have to lug around stupid cables to bridge between superultramegafasthighspeed USB and ol' reliable RS232. There's no performance gain, so what's the point?

What is this world coming to? Next thing you know, people will start teaching kids ethics in their homes! Seriously though, this kind of crap has no place in school. Sure I think that "filesharing" (what a euphemism...) copyrighted crap is wrong, but I don't want some math teacher telling my kids that. It is not the goverment's responsibility to teach morality -- that's what parents are for. I realize this isn't the government's inititiave, but it's just another example of how teachers take it upon themselves to decide what should be taught to our children in public schools. I can't tell you the number of times in elementary and middle school that teachers threw in some moral or another on top of the day's lesson. I'm beginning to ramble, so I'll wrap it up... Teach 'em calculus and physics, and then let 'em go home.

I still want one, and not because of the wowfactor. There seriously needs to be a large (like 3m x 3m), feasible, outdoor display that can be driven through repeatedly and still be visible. It'd be perfect for those idiot drivers who don't notice the "Keep Moving" and "No Turn on Red" signs. If they have to drive through them, they can't *not* see them. (hopefully...) Even a "Slow down, idiot" sign would be great.

It's my mission to make Americans better drivers, although I'm beginning to think natural selection is the best way to go about that.

I use a belkin tunecast. Same type deal, except only 4 possible stations. It was making a horrible whining noise at any volume, no matter what device was attached or radio I used to listen to it. Finally, I put the thing on the test bench and tried to figure out what was causing it.
Apparently, at 3V it would put out this whine. Too bad it uses 2 AAA batteries... (3V). However, when you up the voltage to 4.5 volts, the hum is quieter. At 6.5V the whine is completely gone. So I grabbed an old CD player's 'car kit' power adaptor (switchable between 4.5V and 6V, and wired it directly to the tunecast.
Works like a charm. No more noisy hum! This also has the added benefit of increasing the power, preventing a "fuzzy" signal in populated areas. Nobody overpowers my station! ha! Plus I don't have to change the batteries.

There's an easy way to solve this whole problem. Redefine the Universe. If the Universe is everything we observe, instead of everything that exists, then you can say that the big bang started the universe. In other words, what we call the "big bang" is really just the oldest event that we have observed (directly or indirectly). That way, theorizing what happened before the big bang is meaningless, as it is of no consequence to our observable universe.
Sounds kinda sneaky, but that's always the way I have thought of it.

The freedom to swing my fist ends where your freedom to not get hit begins.

Only if you're smart enough to think through the consequences, and short-circuit the whole process. Your freedom to swing your fist ends just past the other guy's face. But your responsibility to accept whatever consequences that result from said swing begins as soon as you hit his face. He has the right to respond in whatever manner he deems necessary, again, as long as he is prepared to deal with the consequences, whether social, legal, medical, or whatever.

The same rule applies whether you are casually swinging your fists for pleasure while enjoying the breeze, or beating the snot out of the other guy.

He has the freedom to speak

*sigh* Freedom of speech has nothing to do with communication between citizens. Of course, you can say whatever you want to whoever you want using whatever medium is available. But as with the swinging your fist example, you have to deal with the societal consequences. "Free speech" is not a blanket you can run under and hide when you said something that stepped on someone else's toes. (*cough* Dixie Chicks *cough*) It's simply a concept that limits the government's ability to make a law limiting that communication, or to prosecute you in any way for it. If a mob with torches and pithforks comes looking for you after you called them a bunch of hillbillies, you can't cop out with "but what about freedom of speech?"
