Oh, Fuck off! Leaving one's country is not as simple as you think it is. This country is fucked. No doubt about it. It's turned into a state full of selfish, consumer-driven, gullible, and worse yet, fundamentalist idiots. You'd like us to go, wouldn't you? Dissent makes people like you cringe... It scares you so much to question your own "values" (whatever the fuck that means) that you'd rather that dissenting voice be crushed and expelled from your presense. No, it is not we who should leave but it is you.

I'm so sick of all the people who just spew invective about this country like it's the worst freakin country on the planet

Can you name any other country that is currently fully involved in two simultaneous wars for conquest, on another continent?! Who else is torturing civilians, captured fighters, and is bombing, maming, shooting, and killing many tens or hundereds of thousands of Civilians? We've already beat Saddam himself in the number of people we've slaughtered. How many more will it take before you open your eyes and see that things are not right in la la land?

We are the worst country on the planet. We are the only state that has the power and ability to project its will on anyone yet we use the worst possible reasoning and discretion when asserting and utilizing that power. Yes, we are the worst country on the planet. The U.S. is a snotty teenaged kid with his finger on the trigger and a barrel pointed straight at the world's collective head.

It's good to see that people are still civil in their discourse even though others, like myself, often times resort to sometimes rude jabs. Sorry if my points came off sounding a little arrogant.

Americans will become more aware as things get worse. If they don't get worse, people will pay no attention to it. Look at the london bombings and the Carl Rove fiasco. People are starting to see through things and doubt the often touted "official story". The current political structure in this country is going to be hit hard by a hard pressed, overworked and underpaid constituency and it's not going to be pretty. People are looking for any excuse to tar and feather politicians so I think we're starting to see this resentment come to a head.

If people want to learn, they have to first learn to question. Ask anyone if they trust the media and they'll undoubtedly say "no". But at the same time, they simply turn around and listen to what they have to say anyway, often taking it at face value as actual fact. These people need to learn not to believe everything that comes out of the glowing tube or is printed on paper or keyed into a web site somewhere. Just with the web, people can lookup far more information than previously possible.

The politicians are messing up and its becoming obvious to people thus, they are questioning. This will bring them around towards becoming more informed and as a result, more active. I expect to see the next election have record turn out.

It's nice that you can remember government figures... but if memory serves, we're at the tail-end of a soon-to-bust housing bubble, employment is much worse than released figures would have you believe (it only counts those who are still receiving unemployment benefits, which stop after 6 months, and not all unemployed opt to receive said benefits), CONSUMER inflation is not at a rate of 3% a year but is closer to 10-12% per year. CORPORATE inflation, due to tax cuts and imports from countries like China is below 1% which, when factored with Consumer inflation, brings it to around 3% (corporations are much larger buyers than we are as consumers, not only to they by the "stuff" that makes their product, but also their means of production). Look at the cost of going to the grocery store, the price of gas, the cost of housing, and the interest rates on unsecured debt. Maybe you were one of the lucky ones to get a nice job that offset these figures, but most people are not in that boat. Life is becoming much tougher, financially, to contend with.

Let's also not mention the ever widening trade deficit as we try to compete in a global economy where our wealth is being purposefully siphoned off into developing nations. How about the national debt?

It boils down to this: there are sectors of the economy that are experiencing very high profits (energy, housing, Military services). This performance is so very high that it currently offsets the poorly performing "rest of the market". That is not a "strong economy", that is an end-of-life "bubble economy". What do you think will happen when the housing bubble comes to an end and all of those fools who financed a $300k house are now sitting on only $100k in assets and another $200k in remaining debt (in the form of a mortgage) on their recently devalued property? Yeah buddy, the economy is strong, unemployment is not an issue and little green leprechauns will be at your door shortly with a big pot of gold for the hard working American family.

Judging by the state of the American economy, Conservatives are the ones who do not understand the market economy (e.g. you cannot continually pilfer from the system and expect the system to remain profitable and productive), and their complete and utter lack of resolve to do anything to fix the current situation tells me that they hate America more than the Liberals.

  15. My suggestions on Improving Education? · · Score: 1

    1) Eliminate voucher programs and funding based on "performance" on standardized testing. Schools should be funded based on the current size of the student body. Nothing more. The more students you have, the more money you get to support those students. Accountability should come into play by laying off teachers and staff that aren't pulling their weight, not by cowering to Teachers Unions. (Though unions absolutely have their place)

    2) Many many many teachers need to be laid off and pulled out of the pool. There are so many hack job teachers out there that at this point that I would never send my child to a public school. We need much tougher standards for new teachers. If you are going to teach math, get a full B.A. in Mathematics with a 1 year program in Education. Same with history, Music, Literature, Language, etc. No more of these "phoney baloney" Education degrees (with the exception of Elementary ed). I don't know how many times I've heard Math Ed majors rag on doing proofs, saying "this isn't math... why do I have to do this to teach Algebra?"... Many (not all) ride on the coat-tails of actual Math majors who, painfully so, must take classes with these people.

    3) Pass a bill banning the currently accepted practice of parents suing Schools and Teachers for failing their precious little brats. 99% of these suits are frivilous at best. All of these cases should be taken to the School Board for review, not a civil court. If the School Board finds signs of wrong doing on the part of their staff, then and only then can action be taken to rectify the situation. Otherwise, your special little child gets held back.

    4) Mathematics needs to become an absolute cornerstone to one's education. It seems that all I hear these days are these children whining about how they hate math and they see no point to it. The truth is, Mathematics is not taught in primary school. It is arithmetic that is forced into the brains of our youth. Algebra needs to be taught with basic proofs as with Geometry. Younger children are more capable of understanding this than those of us who are older. In trigonometry, students must be taught WHY Cosine/Sine/Tangent/arc*/hyp* produce the results that they do, not what buttons to mash on a $100 calculator. Hell, most High School graduates that have gone through trig or pre-calc couldn't tell Transcendental functions from Algebraic functions although they "got an A in that class".

    5) Language skills are absolutely necessary. Summer reading programs as they are now, are a complete joke. Most of the time, teachers give students an extra MONTH to read the books they should have been reading over the summer. On top of that, most of the examinations barely cover what the actual premise of the book is let alone prompt any serious thought into deeper meaning. As well, more emphasis needs to be placed on foreign languages. Most every other country in the world has a fairly multi-lingual population except, you guessed it, the USA and her westernized cabal of cookie-cutter "free market" states. (sorry for the political rant... its been one of those... few years if you know what I mean)

    6) There needs to be created a mandatory "Discussion" course where students learn to talk about Current and Historical Events. They must also learn how to adequately structure their statements and form logical arguments (some good philosophy courses could remedy this). I'm tired of hearing how people need to "express themselves". Most people still need to learn how to express themselves before anyone with a sound, rational mind will even want to hear anything of them.

I picked up this habit in high school when the English classes were having us read a book per week but I didn't want to spend all week reading. I'd usually read through the assigned materials the night before the accompanied exam. Basically, I'd pretend as if I were watching a film. As well, in college, I found that reading the entire book the night before any discussion or exam left the entire contents of the book fresh in my mind rather than spaced out over a 3-4 day period. (although this is different for classes that progress one section at a time) YMMV ... and yes, /. is not a place for humility.

At least in that regard, we know what to expect. We know, for the most part, that it is wise to rebuild your modules after rebuilding your kernel. With binary-only drivers, you must wait for the manufacturer to do so. There are other binary-only drivers that work with multiple kernel releases as they use some sort of all-inclusive string for their magic tags and basically hope and pray that the same function calls made within the module exist in each subsequent kernel. A good example of this is the HighPoint binary raid drivers. They provide those drivers as well as an open source version. The binary drivers seem to provide more support for management, however they have some nifty magic tag that allows it to load under almost any kernel >= 2.6.9.

The point is, with the Linux kernel and our binary drivers, we know what to expect: always count on rebuilding the driver with every subsequent kernel release. With Microsoft, we don't know WHAT will be broken or changed in each subsequent release.
