That is a very good site for modem scripts for all phones. Of course I used IrDA, but if your Mac can see the phone via Bluetooth, it should work exactly like with IrDA (only better). Anyway, after installing the proper scripts and reading the help-file of how to use the script, I had no problem with Nokia 6310 or Ericsson T39 to have a good GPRS connection.

Actually I could use the T39 even without the scripts, once I figured out how to set the GPRS settings into the phone. Something I couldn't do with the Nokia. Then I just dialed (from my Mac ofcourse) *98*2# instead of the phone number. The *98 stands for dial GPRS, and the *2 for which GPRS set to use - the # is just to terminate the string.

Apple actually has (at least) two different cards for desktop G4s. There is the 32meg 2MX and the 64meg 2MX TwinView. These are for the normal tower G4's AGP-slot - I'm not talking about the iMac/eMac here.

While the two 2MXs look quite the same, and both have analog (VGA or HD15) and digital (ADC) connectors, they are quite diffenrent from "inside". The 32meg version can only push identical video to both connectors. On the other hand the 64meg TwinView can support two simultanious monitors (screen spanning) - hence the name.

What I don't know though could the 32meg be hacked to support screen spanning. This depends on the internenal structure of the board. Most PC's 2MX cards cannot be modified, as the hardware is built that way. (Of course they have DVI instead of ADC, but that changes nothing.)

    Dear(?) Apple,

I was at a local happening here in Finland watching Steve Jobs' speech at the show yesterday. The happening was organised by Apple Finland, and was set in nice surroundings. The snack bar was great and the general atmosphere was very positive as Mac believers gathered to hear the high priest talk to them via the great Internet... The beleivers (me included) were pleased to see and hear their high priest talk with lot of adjectives in his speech. Some of us even cheered in religious extacy... ...but then something happened...

The high priest started talking in strange voice! Many believers could hear the voice of the enemy in his voice. Even though the high priest tried making some jokes about the enemy, still the voice of the enemy could be heared in his speech. ...and then it came! He announced that he had lost his faith and he was now speaking with the voice of the enemy!

He even named his new holy artifact after the enemy. I could sense the disbelief in the room. I could even sense the disbelief in the room across the Atlantic! Believers started to open their eyes - they had been worshiping a false icon all along! They had been led to believe that this was the way to enlightment. But now the true nature of this false religion started to show - it is just another religion of many others, all bowing to the enemy...

Well, I for one woke up! I woke from the dream I had been living happily for a few years ow. I used to serve the enemy, I tried other religions and finally settled to this one. But yesterday's speech from the (false) high priest opened my eyes!

I am now changing back to my old religion that serves the Penguin. I was going to buy a new portable artifact this fall, and still am - but it will not be of this religion. The artifact that I will buy shall be of the true religion - I see it now clear!

    ---

Yes, I am changing back to Linux! I thought OS X would be it, but after yestedays speech I understood that Apple is not an alternative to Microsoft, it's just another derivate of it. Both your OS X 10.2 policy and your incomprihensible iTools to .mac policy switch have convinced me of this.

No, seriously. It's easy to replace the internal drive with anything (supported). Ofcourse it is always hard to compare a used and a new computer, but if you can find one, I would recommend getting a used TiBook. There are several advantages you get:
    1) More power. G4/400 will outperform the G3/700 easily. But do you really need it? 2) PCMCIA-slot. You might just need it! And BTW the AirPort card fits elswhere. 3) Better display & external display connector. You can have double displays when at home/office. 4) Infrared, this is something the iBook lags!

BUT, you do loose some too! With used laptop, you get used battery. Although well looked after (1yr old) battery gave me easily 4 hours of writing time. Also the TiBook has larger footprint than the iBook.

So I have to say it will be a tough choise! But one thing I still cannot stop marvelling about is the instant sleep/wakeup when closing/opening the lid. I personally wouldn't replace Firewire with Bluetooth, as you would never reach the speed with Bluetooth that you get with Firewire. And when using the iPod as an external HD or transfering MP3s to and from it, you do appriciate the speed. On the other hand PDA syncing is quite a small affair, and Bluetooth, USB or even serial is quite sufficient.

As for the cell phone speed? I'm quite happy with my GPRS phone's speed (9-46k, depending on net traffic) and can't wait to get my hands on the Mac's USB-Bluetooth adapter. Of course I prefer the cable at home or office, but on the road I don't have much choise.
