Until diesel pumps are everywhere, I think I'll hold out for my solar/hydrogen-fuel-cell/flywheel hybrid.
But diesel pumps are everywhere, at least near where I live (Toronto), where would many trucks get their fuel? Not many specialized diesel stations around. Almost always cheaper than regular gas, although a bit worse for the environment.
Anyone remember that anime Doraemon movie episode "cloud kingdom" where Doraemon discovered this sky kingdom?
Well, they had this "central" cloud which is a solar power station in the pacific sky and it would "beam" its power to all the other clouds.. They even had a plan to flood everyone on earth, evil!
This shows that anime is the drive too many technologies:) well, the Japanese anyway...
I made a program in my spare time (just a quick hack) over the summer to speak cantonese words given input in a textbox. Chinese windows (Big5) is required though (and a lot of ram)
My sys-admin made me take off all the audio files because it used around 10megs of their space, but e-mail me at lego_bot@yahoo.com if you are interested.
The voice is based on the "yale romanization" of cantonese (learn it to learrn cantonese!!!) I'm planning to extend this to include phrases in chinese and other stuff, and make it in something else.
Look at Linux Journal, Perl Journal, Dr.Dobb's and all these cool magazines! They would have enough already (stupid canadian dollar)! I only live a few hours away from Detroit and Buffolo!
(hehe, luckily I can get leech most of these off the profs..)
How is this going to work? Since the majority of chinese users input their chinese as big5,
(eg www.ê.com) will not be the same as the unicode equivalent..
I thought of an episode of Cyber Formula Sin when there was this problem with the Asurada? It was pretty cool. While the pit crew fixed the car, the programmer (hot chick, typical anime;-) started Windows (?) and started editing the C program of the car (in a DOS prompt of course...)
Hey... a few guys in my engineering program actually did this last year for their project! In the competition I saw the robot squirt a water gun to put out a candle somewhere on a flat area.
I found the link for one of the groups who did this, and the assignment page here.
More people (including me) are using jar files to distribute java programs. Maybe peaple can use it for other programming languages as well.
"jar" has the advantage of being on every platform with a java platform. It can be loaded from a webbrowser, it has built in compression, digitally signed signature, and being "like tar", which makes it really easy to use.
If the app is java bytecode, then there isn't really a need to "install" the app, just run it directly from the jar.
But the disadvantage is that jar (and java) is somewhat slow, but as cpu/ram grows, I think it is a good way to distribute software in the future.
I think you may have deliberately misunderstood me when I used BackStreet Boys. I hate the BackStreets, I used them to show even though there are crap like BackStreets, there exists a log of _other_ original music in america.
Maybe I shouldn't have put Faye on "the list", but I just can't accept the fact that an "artist" in her own words copies music from groups like the Cranberries (though its done legally).
(My definition of talent in _this_ context creativity is based on , but you are right that she has a nice voice, so I am wrong to put here there.)
"The Hong Kong music industry rarely licenses songs from abroad anymore"
Well, they don't "license" it anymore, but copy 75% of the song to claim to be Artists instead of singers. Take a look at the recent press in Ming Pao Entertainment when they ripped music from Singapore. I think it has become better tho, because this time the press actually exposed them.
Sorry for sounding rude, but I am not spreading FUD, only my opinion.
I see you're point (tho I don't agree with Jackie Chan;-) I'm also a hugh fan of Beyond, too bad I missed their concert on x-mas!
I was just trying to make the point that most of Hong Kong industry either copies from other entertainment industries (america, and Japan, as you pointed out), or have their idiotis singer/actor "stars" idolized by the population.
Take a look at (but don't listen to;-) Leon, Kelly, Andy(s), Sammi, Nichalas, Wong Fei, to name a few... They are all very popular celebrities, and yet they don't possess any real talent.
(Beyond, on the other hand, _is_ Hong Kong culture!:-)
America, even with its BackStreets and 36 2/3 degrees celcius, does have an incredible amount of original music.
The thing with the Hong Kong entertainment industry in general is that it does not produce quality productions. Much of its ideas are not original and were "copied" from the West. Much of their talent have already left (ie. John Woo, Chow Yun Fat, Jet Li) for the western industry. Listen to their "hit" music, much of it is copied from Western Music (I can name many, for example, Wong Fei and the Cranberries...)
In the music Industry, most of their singers/actors are just "good looking idols" popularized by studios (like 98 degrees in the west), but the worst part is that there are practically no "artists" anymore who actually come up with their own music (one exception is Beyond, a band in HK.)
If one's work is of high quality, many people will not pirate it, but actually buy it. I know I wouldn't pirate The Matrix after I have seen it on the big screen. Many people actually download an MP3, listen to it, and if they like it, they will buy the CD. If the Hong Kong industry does not inspire creativity and originality, no one will respect its work and will keep on producing VCD's.
check out linuxfab.cx here (hehe linux for fobs...)

A 733 Mhz G4 can finally beat my dual overclocked 1.2 Ghz Pentium III with the help of the "special instruction set" ;-)
Seriously, they haven't even mentioned or hinted at the so "Apple" prices these things are going to cost. Will OSX even be loaded on these machines?
How is this going to work? Since the majority of chinese users input their chinese as big5,

Actually last month I saw a begger walking down Central with sony earphones!
But I guess he was one of those professional beggers...

Think of how many computer monitors will be destroyed by these devices!
Where can I get a web browser for my old XT?
I read somewhere before that a dual Athlon would be possible. Does anyone know if there exists mainboards that will support this?
Using SGI computers to simulate the M&Ms ;-)
of course
I knew my .sig would be useful someday ;-)
Which would give more incentive to write software that bypasses the firewall? Reading a BBC article, or visiting playboy.com?!
If they block the flow of porn, more people will know methods to bypass the firewall, rendering it useless!
Actually I wouldn't mind having a decent dos emulator for NT. The NTVDM thing is just too limited, and VMware is too slow.
Anyone know of other dos emulators/virtual machines for NT?
Is it illegal for me to have a hydrogen bomb in my basement for "research" purposes? Or an AK-47 for weekend hunting?
For some reason, slash adds random spaces to my sig! I don't know why but it may be because my sig is over the max length.
If i erase that space, another random space is inserted somewhere else!
:-(
Last month, I bought a clearance laptop (Dell LM P90, 16 MB RAM, 1 Gig HD, and 640*480 active matrix display) for $500 Canadian.
I bought an extra ethernet/modem combo for 60$CDN and it runs linux (slackware) with X prefectly.
I don't know about these pda's or sub-laptops, but I think they must get a lot cheaper before they can compete with out-of-date computers.

I already know that the Beta 20.1 version can be downloaded, but I can't find cygwin 1.0.
thanks anyway
