I hate to say it, but almost all cars today are electronically limited to a maximum speed. Granted, it's usually pretty high (110-120 mph) but it's still there
Thats 2000 optical watts, which is a hellofva optical power focused in a small area. Keeping in mind typical laser efficiency's are very low (depending upon the type), it's going to take several 10kw's of electrical power to output that kind of optical power.
I've found the same thing... you don't know how frusterating it is trying to get an install of 7.3 going on an older box that crashes because of faulty ide module drivers.

I personally like it the best out of what I've tried. Mandrake didn't install correctly, and then when it did, it crashed. Slackware gave me nightmares too many times to count.

169,182 miles. 95 EX. Still going strong, only major repair was to replace original clutch around 140,000 miles. I certainly don't complain about the 30 mpg either.:)

The thing I've been thinking is... what they really need is another somewhat-close supernova to occur. That should give scientists even more data to digest.
I wonder if they threw any 'impulse 255' tricks in there to give a slight advantage. I couldn't imagine how difficult that would be to play without any visual input.
Point of clarification: The latest versions of AG had mandatory spyware built-in (ie: you could not remove it). The only around that was a hacked VX2.DLL (I forgot the URL). From what I also heard, AG made all users upgrade to the new version of the satellite, to enforce the use of the spyware.

We used to play Quake everytime the comp sci teacher (who didn't know shit) was out for the day and we had a sub. Eventually the network admin caught on and installed some sort of console-access restriction program (I forget the name). Basically all we could do was just load the programs on the start menu and that was *it*.
Ahh... the wonders of DOS shell from QBASIC, or the file:// from IE or even ShellExec from Win32 API.:) Needless to say his pathetic attempts ended in utter failure and I laughed my ass all the way to Claustrophobopolis::gib noise::
So if you don't count that, then no; we weren't able to play games at school, much less be encouraged to do so.
In order to achieve a nuclear explosion you need critical mass, BUT you also need a highly refined fuel. Nuclear power plants do NOT use this for obvious reasons (high-risk and theft).
I somewhat agree... some game platforms it *might* work for. However anyone who disagrees with the fact Java is too slow for a real-time fps doesn't know sh*t about programming.
Who knows... if this does end up working maybe it will create a new genre of games.
I hate to say it but you're wrong for the first and last points. Write code that does the same thing in C++ and Java and see which is faster. For most applications, I guarantee C will beat it.
As for OpenGL.. as far as I know that was all on the PC platform. They didn't port OpenGL to a console system. Even if they did, OpenGL is *only* a graphics library, not a complete API for the whole OS/system. Big difference.
This idea will never work... Java is extremely slow compared to languages such as C++. Remember Java is an intrepreted language, not compiled in the strictest sense. Not only that, the platforms are too differientated to be able to make this a viable solution. It would take forever to develop such a platform.

Good idea, but isn't the point of a screensaver to "save" the screen while you aren't at your PC?
I'd be willing to do this myself as well but I honestly doubt it'd pay well keeping that idea in mind.

I think I heard news about this being developed at some major university back in '99. Sound familiar to anyone else?
