I'd love to see the citation where people are forbidden from installing solar on their own property. I'm finding that hard to believe. Unless it's some of these rich bitch subdivisions that have draconian rules governing what you can do with your home. In that case though you agreed to be their bitch when you bought the place.

I don't know about the UK but in the US we have a curious blend of government and private public utilities companies. They are supposedly private but they are government regulated complete with a monopoly over their assigned area. The amount of profit they are allowed to make is also regulated. If they make too much then that money is refunded to customers and if they come up short that money is levied against the customers. Not really capitalism at all.

The problem is that renewable tech is still not there yet. To try to run the utility grid with renewables is unworkable at this time so how do you manage to integrate them with old reliable coal and nuclear? The choice of most of the green segment seems to be to pass the costs to all the other customers of the electric company and drive power costs higher. Understandably this will upset the other customers who have a finite amount of money to spend.

For starters a basic set of tools suffices for 98% of what you need to do for an average car repair and most of the specialized tools you can borrow from auto parts stores or rent from a tool rental. Computer diagnostics you can purchase by the hour at a rate often less than the hourly labor rate of a garage. I've fixed a lot of things with youtube or sites like crownvic.net and a laptop sitting on a fender. You must have at least a basic level of mechanical ability but really it's mostly a matter of just doing and learning. I can't repair a transmission myself but I have bought one out of a wreck and replaced it myself and it cost less than half what a shop would have charged me. Most of the time if you have a cheap $1000 car if it's not something like a hose or minor component such as an alternator then you're better off dumping it at the scrap yard and starting over. I see lots of cars for sale between 1,000-2,000 dollars that make decent transportation that will hold up for a year or three without a lot of outlay. The $500 ones are more iffy but every month you get by is another month you've saved a car payment. If you throw the money you would have paid out on that overpriced loan from the steal and repaint dealer into a bucket you'll come out ahead. If you don't know much about cars you need a friend to go with you to make sure they'll be reliable. New cars are for people who have lots of disposable income. New cars from dealers that do things like this article mentions are always overpriced and the loans are predatory so they're already paying significantly more than the damn things are worth.

I bought a car for $1100 when I got out of the Air Force back in 1988. It was a 1980 Malibu with a V6 engine that got a solid 20MPG and looked fair but drove good. 14 years later I sold it to a scrap yard for $300. I'm now driving a 2001 Grand Marquis I bought in 2005 for $10,000 cash and it should last another 5-10 years. I've bought one new car in my life and I'll never take that fucking again. It was nice but a year later it was a used car with 20K on it and a big car payment, big annual taxes and maximum insurance premium. It costs way too much to keep a new car. I can afford it but I can think of too much I can do with an extra 600 dollars a month.

Android works better on some phones than others. This is why a lot of people buy iPhones after having an Android phone. They bought a cheap shitty phone from some half ass manufacturer and then had nothing but trouble. Now they believe it's Android that's the problem when it's the phone's maker. Their next phone is often an iPhone and of course only Apple makes iPhones.

There are only a few decent Android phones and then there is the junk market which makes up the bulk. I've got a S2 and a Note 3 from Samsung and both are well made good phones. They don't have quite the style that the iPhone has but I like them and they have the one thing I wanted that Apple's products lack, an SD card slot. Still the iPhones are very slick and well designed phones. I have a lot of friends that own them and none of them seem all that concerned about the lack of memory in the latest iPhone models. Interestingly the benchmark comparisons show that despite seemingly lower specs the iPhone6 models do very well, in may cases exceeding the performance of the S5. My Note 3 has 3GB of RAM but due to all the shit Samsung and AT&T have stuck on the phone it only has about 1GB free. Why do Android manufacturers insist on crippling their phones with crap? At least I can wipe it and install a mod on it to make it work like it was supposed to.
