We tried the liberal approach in law enforcement. It lead to the twinkie defence where a man got off for killing a mayor because he ate to many twinkies and the resulting sugar high made him legally insane.

They are mor elike 200 years behind in most areas. They have no plumbing in the large majority of the country and electricty isn't even a consideration.

Nothing from Archos even comes close but the Nomad Zen is nice for the money. It just lacks a decent interface which has been creatives problem with all of their products for years. I have a Nomad IIc right now from Creative and love it. I've dropped it several times and the case is all scratched up but it still works like a charm and iunes plays quite happily with it.
I really like the looks of the iPod but I refuse to pay that much money for it right now. Maybe when I find a new job but even then it will be a serious decision.

Apple has put as much or more into Darwin as any open source developer. That stupid comment about quicktime for Linux is just what i would expect from a linux bigot. Quicktime is not a codec, there is no reason open source developers can't implement mpeg4 and the other codecs with the exception of sorenson (note sorenson not apple) on linux.
If you want to be anti-Apple then do so with at least a moderate amount of intelligence and evidence.

I grew up in ranch country I know what I'm talking about. You can't domesticate something as dumb as a Cow, all the do is walk around and eat grass, literally. Animals don't need shelter, they don't need us.
In high school i worked at a Mail Boxes etc on a street corner in downtown Fremont CA. My boss used to complain about the pay phone in front of the store because the kids coming home from school hung around next to it for hours everyday to the disturbance of everyone around. We talked about it once and the gist of it was that the phone companies come to small businesses like liquor stores and offer a set amount of cash over a period of time to lease the store front spot for the phone. You sign a binding contract, usually 10 years, sometimes more. You can not back out of the contract no matter how badly you want it gone.
So no they dont own the land, it's leased. At least here in CA that seems to be the case.
I think the reason they arent being exploited as much is because of the increased number of firewalls etc in use. Most cable modems now have them standard as well as dsl routers.
This doesnt solve the problem but it would explain the lower than expected numbers they talk about.

Considering that 911 is a toll free call I doubt any phone companies will become altruists and put up phones that say "Homeless only" on them.
They can still shout for help and run to nearby businesses. I doubt the impact will be large but who knows.
