he flashed a police helicopter searching for the source of the beam.
This is about the dumbest thing I have ever seen. There is ABSOLUTELY no way this guy was going to get caught, and if he was caught, there was no way he was going to be convicted. Then he goes and reveals his position, his identity and his guilt. All I can say is: WTF?
Clicking on the link made me think the 2038 bug just meant you had been slashdotted. Seriously though, I read about the 2038 thing, sounds like we have 34 years to fix it, should not be a problem. But when we fix it to use longs instead of ints aren't we just setting up people in the year 60538 or something to get screwed by our shortsightedness. Won't replacing int with long ultimately result in the same issue. Damn computers. Its never good enough, they always have to cause some new problem.
No doubt this article submission will get bashed for not being about star wars; but this is a fairly interesting article, if you take the time to read it. I was particularly interested in the fact that this "tire" improves cornering while maintaining a smooth ride. No doubt all the NASCAR fans out there will be happy. While I am sure this is a long way off, it looks promising.
We need a.spam domain, and it needs to be illegal to send an unsolicited email via any domain but this one, I don't think it should be illegal to send spam, there should just be an electronic readable disclaimer on it,.spam would serve this purpose nicely!
High school students are enamored with their cell phones. I am especially surprised at the number of high school girls running around with cell phones as accessories to their outfit. Find ways to show kids how to do cool things with their cell phones, things like controlling a Mac via bluetooth or writing Java games for their phone. I think you will spark some interest if you can show them how to do stuff that will increase their social status by having the coolest phone or the game nobody else has. Of course I was the quintessential geek in high school so what do I know!
While I can not begin to know the complexity of the situation you face in China and your inability ot affect your govenrment, I do know this. While 95% of the spam I get comes from the US, 99% of the traffic I get from China is Spam. I will block the 95% of SPAM coming from Florida, but I will also make an effort to drop Chinese traffic becuase I am 99% sure that it is SPAM. Whereas something from Florida, while potentially SPAM is maybe 1% likely to be SPAM.
This is going to sound horribly curelgiven my relative freedom and your relative lack thereof, but if you don't like the fact that your government won't play nice, get a new one!
Idon't think price drives this market. iTunes is the most successful store because of iPod. Innovation and new business models will drive sales in the new "digital music age", not price per song. Not to say that price is completely inelastic, but I do not believe that $.99 vs. $.94 will sell music in bulk.
So, what's up with your sig then? Change your mind?
I don't think this ignorant at all. It is capitalism and the "Invisible Hand" at its best. I do not want to lump slashdot into a single minded entity, but I am amazed at the GENERAL feeling on Slashdot that Evil Corporations who choose to be bad citizens and pollute and act unethically should be boycotted and should not recieve patronage, but when someone proposes doing the same to a government which is being a bad Internet citizen, they are attacked. If China chooses to Abuse the Internet it will face consequences and will suffer from market forces blocking its access to information and commerce. Only righting this injustice will restore their rights in the Internet domain. Further proof taht the Internet will regulate itself. We should be so lucky!
I think this is OK as long as the warrant restricts them from physically entering the home to install such software*. A warrant that allows entry to the home is in my opinion a grey area. Of course there are warants issued to place recording devices in homes, so....
*I would say this is a big argument for criminals to use OS software as the security through obscurity becomes increasingly valuable, imageine the look on the WIndows Technician's face when he sees a CLI login screen. WTF, how do I install spyware on THIS!
Will AOL release this to the general public or to just AOL customers. My hunch says it will be for everyone, but with some special deals for AOL customers. What can AOL bring to the table that nobody else can? I don't think anything. A name? Would anyone use the AOL service because they knew the AOL name? iTunes is certainly better known. Will this drive AOL business? Would anyone buy AOL to get the better deals they offer? Doubtful... So what is the Competitive advantage AOL can bring to the mix? This is a dumb move with no way for AOL to differentiate or leverage any competitive advantage. They should fold up shop now, before they waste any more money on printing press releases!
I don't know much about PGP, admittedly I don't use it, although I know how to create keys. Wil lthis service be free? I looked at the site and did not see a cost structure. Will we pay for every use of the server? How does this work(Not PGP, but the service)?
I am assuming that this question is why are we at war with Iraq, China is just as bad and nobody wants to go to war with them. But I agree, China is evil, probably more so than Iraq was. We just can't go to war with China because they would beat us.
I would think there are easy ways for MS to deal with the cost problem. I't can't take more than 2-3 full time people ot create a language pack for Office. And They make money on a $20 license at the volume they sell office for. But the issue is not about the Profit margins in Office, but the number of potential customers in Africa. Even if MS gave away Office they stil lwouldn't ahve any takers. Nobody has a computer. So my original point was that this doesn't matter if there are no computers. Sure threre is a potential market of 70 million swahili speaking people, but none of them are the target market for MS Office or OOo because they are missing a very important prerequisite. A Computer.
You could tell me Oo.org could run a blender thru a USB prot, and I am not sure I would consider it a useful feature. Sure another language set is a little more useful than that, but if there are no computers to run it on, then does it matter at all? I'm not saying it isn't useful, maybe there is a real need for this (That was my original question). But a feature without a need is not a feature, it is just dead space on my hard drive.
How much of an emerging market is Africa? Is Swahili a real barrier to entry for a potential African Consumer? Really what I ma asking is is there a market that MS is missing out on in Africa by not having Swahili? If so this is a major blow to them, if not, then I'm not sure this makes much difference at all.
I do realize it's a love-it-or-hate-it type device
I totally agree. I am in the hate it category. I just feel that its time is over, and IBM should move on to the trackpad. Mmm...trackpad... Oh well, to each his own.
I don't know how you can defend the Think Pad, with those latches and that silly little red button for a mouse. Every think pad I have ever used looks like something from the eighties, looks like it is going to fall apart and has that darn red button. I am afraid to touch it thinking it is the self destruct button. I hate that thing. If IBM could move their design into the 21st century that would be great. Maybe Lenovo will do that. Ditch the pointer thing and the weird latch mechanism and we'll talk.
How exactly are they going to stand up to EA? They can't even figure out how to spell "Games"!
I was gonna make a joke about France, but frankly...

Actually, I think that was just you! Wierd, Huh?

WTF is BART?
bay area rapid transit
What the fuck is WTF?
Yeah...I'm waiting for my lazy family to wake up...What is your excuse?
Damn, and I had 'em 5 minutes ago! That'll teach me to use my mod points up so fast! :-(

Ignorance is not bliss, it's annoying.

I actually don't work for palm, I was making fun of the guy, but that is an interesting tidbit.

Fair Enough

Full disclosure: I am a PalmSource employee -- and I am scared shitless because I don't know Linux. HELP!
